Common Questions and Answers about Cat allergies licking

Avatar m tn t know why that is impacting his life, but it sounds like the cat has anxiety. Usually if the cat has food allergies, they will scratch around their neck, top of their head and possibly around their face. It could also be allergies from something else, such as fleas, flea bites or dust. This is harder to determine and may have to be discovered by a vet. If they feel that is the reason, they can give the cat a shot that will temporarily relieve the itching for about a month.
Avatar n tn I don't know if this is behavorial or allergies. My cat, female has been licking all her hair off for 6 mo now. This happened sortly soon after she got fixed. She has always been on the thin side. I use Frontline Plus here in Florida. She is totally an inside cat. Now she looks naked except for her head and the places she cannot reach to lick. I took her to a Value Vet once and they told me to give her some hormone. This Did Not Work!.
Avatar n tn So my cat has bin licking herself bald on her legs and now on her stomach. i took her to the vet they said it may be allergies. so i changed her food, litter, bought some fish oil. Nothing helped, now she has a crust around her eyes and has goopy green stuff coming out of the eyes! It was so much money for the vet and i was wondering if anyone had some info before i spend so much money again.
4319250 tn?1352735757 My 3 year old long hair domestic cat has been excessively licking most of his hair off, not completely bald but to where the hair remaining is extremely short. He has been doing this for several months now, as it started when I was finishing up a cheaper flea medication I got from a dollar store. He was fine with it for about 10 or 11 months but the very last dose that I gave him is when the licking began.
Avatar n tn If your cat is not eating or drinking, then this is an emergency, and your cat should go to the veterinarian ASAP. The excessive licking may be due to fleas, allergies, or anxiety (or a combination), and your veterinarian can examine her to tell you the best course of treatment.
Avatar f tn t been eating much this week and barely moving around, just laying around licking. I try to stop him from licking and tried to bandage it up a bit but since it's hind leg and belly it's hard to bandage. I might need to take him to vet but thought I'd see if there is anything I could try first. I seen another similar post and they thought it foo allergy. Could this be my issue? My 3 yr old son is quite attached to this cat and it no longer wants to play even. Thanks!
1178508 tn?1266793916 My cat had flies but for the past 2 months he has been treated wiyh frontline plus and is flea free. Now he has spots on he back, neck, and sides that he constantly licks. Some of the spots are raw and bloody at times. What could be wrong with his skin?
Avatar f tn My cat has been itching her neck to scabs and licking herself bald. It started about a year ago. I took her to the vet and the vet tried to tell me it was fleas. She is an indoor cat so she has no fleas. The vet treated her for fleas anyway and it didn't work. She shave her neck to see the scabs before she said it was fleas.
1578792 tn?1310889878 hi Meg, licking off fur is usually due to allergies, this can be a) environmental b)airborne c) food I've found when it involves the back end legs/butt its usually a litter allergy. for trial get some paper pellet or wood shavings for litter and see if that helps. It could also be pain related, did the Vet check out to see if her anal glands were impacted, does she have a UTI or bowel problems.....kittys will lick the area that they associate with pain. could also well be food allergies.
Avatar m tn i have a male cat who is about to turn 1. about 3 months ago he started licking all the fur off his back legs. he has now licked ALL the hair off his back legs and has started on the base of his tail. other than licking his hair off the only other problem was he had a whole bunch of scabs around his neck but our friend gave us some lotion to but on him and they have cleared up.
Avatar f tn I have one cat that licked the fur off his belly and inner legs till he is bald there. I have another cat who pulls her fur out on her belly and sides -- this one had to have a prednisone shot 2 times and she is okay so far and the fur grew back. I was so happy to have 2 that did not lick their fur off. I groomed one of the ones that didn't lick his fur off and I used one grooming tool that had not been washed yet. I thought it was okay because the vet claimed it was stress related.
Avatar f tn my Bengal started licking her hair off her tummy when she got spayed as a kitten she is now 3 yrs old. Avatar f tn My dog had her blood work tested for allergies and is currently having shots now for almost a year. Her stomach is breaking out so bad now and her skin on her stomach has got so thin from all the Cortizone sprays, injections etc.. Our vet has takin her off all Cortizone do to skin thinning out. Do you know of any other product we can use instead of Cortizone. "Jersey" our dog is always licking and not resting much because of this.
Avatar m tn and some red flags for cat allergies are grains in their diet...try a grain free canned diet, dry foods are loaded in grains but also in many chemicals and preservatives as well. by the article and site I am sending you, it reads over licking can also be caused by stress.... If at all possible, eliminate the cone, this only leads to more stress on kitty. Poor kitty is quite miserable right now as it is. Also did you add anything new into your home such as anything with chemicals?
Avatar n tn I viewed the photos and it looks like a eosinophilic granuloma complex or eosinophilic plaque. These are secondary to allergies. Her continued licking in that area has compounded the problem by causing a secondary bacterial skin infection. She really should be seen by a vet for diagnosis and treatment, and to releave her syptoms which are causing her discomfort. Many skin diseases resemble each other and it may be necessary to have a biopsy performed by your vet for a definitive diagnosis.
Avatar m tn Food Allergies:. Meezey was allergic to her food ingredients . I also put her on a LID diet of Natural Balance Duck only. I also used their dry food in Duck also, and cut back on it quit a bit since I think she may also be allergic to yeast, which is found in a lot of treats. Understand, if it is food allergies this will take a while before her system will show signs of reduced allergic reactions. I thought --oh, a week or so, Ha, it took a good 5 months, but it has worked.
Avatar n tn My 5 year old cat has started licking the fur off his body. He started on his lower belly and I just went away for 3 days and when I came back, he has started licking it off his paws, back and hind legs. I started both he and his brother on a different diet in which I added a small can of wet food in the morning and also gave them 1/2 as much dry food (I change the brand of dry every day.) I am so scared as he seems to be not as healthy anymore.
Avatar f tn I have read all the posts. My cat is about 13 years old, started the licking about a year ago. Her entire stomach and up her sides are now bald. The skin is not red or irritated. She does not seem unhappy. She does have arthritis and is on Metacam, but started this many months before she started licking. I will follow up with changing the litter brand, but it is odd in that she lived 10 years with the same litter, and only recently started the obsessive licking.

Avatar n tn My cat has many red tiny sores on inner thighs and belly. She is constantly licking them. She is lethargic. At only 4 years old, she has lost her energy and normal way. She sleeps all day and licks her belly. When applying cream I have noticed that she has lumps which are obviously painful to my touch. She eats regularly and drinks a lot, however she is losing weight. I have tried antibiotics, and parasite killing cream and spray.
391038 tn?1298737386 My thoughts are that Your kit is stressed and missing his brother. Allergies are usually the first thing we think of with excessive licking/scratching, but considering that he is turning his nose up at food he used to eat with his brother....could be grief. I believe cats like humans can suffer a variety of emotional reactions to a change as huge as losing a brother. My only experience with this occurred when I adopted a kitten who couldn't handle living without litter mate or other cats.
