Common Questions and Answers about Cat allergies later life

cat-allergies

440120 tn?1211724496 I've recently been to an allergist because of newly acquired allergies. I'm 43. I developed an allergy to cats in my 20s after having cats since I was a child. I got a new kitten and found that her saliva gave me hives. Since then I've always had a mild cat allergy. I was tested and found allergic to cats and dogs and a mild reaction to milk. Everything else was negative.
Avatar f tn It is uncommon to “outgrow” an allergy to cat dander in all periods of life with the possible exception of doing at age 70-75 and later. Dog allergens are less potent and more likely, yet still uncommonly, to resolve or attenuate over one’s adult life. To that extent these animal allergies are, for the most part “a lifelong affliction.
Avatar f tn Is it possible to develop an allergy to animals later in life? Or do I suddenly have new allergies? Any ideas from anyone? I would love to get this over with! Thanks for the help.
Avatar n tn I'm a 20 y/o female 140lb.. no history of obesity, smoking, vaping, drugs, drinking, asthma or allergies and I haven't had any recent respiratory illnesses. I do have a history of anxiety and panic attacks. In the past 3 or so weeks I've had problems breathing on and off. A few weeks ago, out of no where, I started feeling like I was suffocating or like I couldn't breathe. It felt like my nose and throat were closing and it was hard to get air in.
Avatar f tn I am suffering from something similar with my new kitten (he's 5 mo.). He was an outside cat the first 4 mo. or so of his life. This year here in central Tx. the pollen and other allergens have been horrendous. A friend on here helped me with understanding this. The cat licks his fur..then carries the allergen in his mouth and licks his fur again. Mine even scratches me on the hands and I think, transfers the residue from his claws to me producing little red itchy whelps on my hands.
Avatar n tn My cat has been sneezing and having nasal discharge for a month now. She has no other symptoms. She plays, she eats well. Just sneezes and has nasal drainage. Her eyes are good. No swollen or runny eyes. Is this allergies? I noticed she usually only sneezes when her nose touches objects or she sniffs. Sometimes mucous comes out with the sneeze.

Avatar f tn I have a cat that is almost 18 years old. He has always been a scar that hides from everyone. He has been hanging out with us and around the dogs and is really stuffy. He has a lot of snot in his nose, it is hard for him to breathe, he gags and coughs and has runny eyes. My husband just thinks he is old with allergies but I'm concerned. I dissolve his food in water and crush it up and he drinks and eats fine. Not sure what to do? Can I give him something for the allergies?
Avatar m tn t know why that is impacting his life, but it sounds like the cat has anxiety. Usually if the cat has food allergies, they will scratch around their neck, top of their head and possibly around their face. It could also be allergies from something else, such as fleas, flea bites or dust. This is harder to determine and may have to be discovered by a vet. If they feel that is the reason, they can give the cat a shot that will temporarily relieve the itching for about a month.
Avatar f tn How do y'all deal with cat allergies?!?!? I've just recently become super allergic to my best friends cat's and I wanna be able to go see her without her cats killing me!!! (or me wanting to kill myself for that matter!) It's really bad, and my eyes, ears, throat, nose and basically whole body have really become anti-cats lately :( What should I do?!?!?! Thanks for the tips and suggestions friends!
Avatar f tn Allergies have a genetic basis but not always to the same allergen. Two parents with allergies (50% chance of developing allergies), one parent 30%. It is possible that it is an allergy, however make sure the cat wasn't bathed with anything, I reacted with hives once to the shampoo I used on a puppy at work.
Avatar f tn Allergies aren't hereditary but they can come and go. Some people outgrow allergies and others get them when they are older. My little brother had a lot of allergies when he was a kid (including pet dander) and outgrew them, while I didn't have them as a child but became more prone to them as an adult.
Avatar m tn This very well could be allergies, but are the symptoms bothersome enough to treat would be a good question. If your nose isn't running, eyes watery and itichy, congested, sore throat... It would probably be best to avoid medications and use some life style methods to start with 1) Sinus Rinses bottle (my absolute favorite allergy treatment). Washes the gunk right out of there.
Avatar f tn I have a cat on .25 ml drops every other day. It will most likely be long term. Should I be concerned....I like my vet, but am very leary about drugs. He has a crippled front leg and has walked forward for his entire life....he is 13. He has developed gingivitis and cannot have any work on his teeth or any type of procedure requiring anesthetic. His internal organs have all come forward and are pushing on his lungs and heart.
Avatar f tn Hi, you can certainly get more sensitive/develop allergies to food or things later in life... I don't know how old you are exactly but certainly around perimenopause my skin started to change & I am even super sensitive to my husband's beard now...(Been married almost 30 years & he has always had a beard) I also have developed intolerances, allergies to certain foods later in life...
Avatar n tn Otodectes, Cheyletiella, Scabies, etc, ringworm and other fungal infections, allergies (allergies to food can occur anytime in the life of a cat), bacterial skin infections, endocrine disorders and more. Ringworm, and some mites can be transmitted to people. Frontline does not treat mites. The topical: "Revolution" is for fleas, ticks, ear mites, and scabies, so it might be a good idea to switch to Revolution for a couple of months.
637356 tn?1301924822 I have a cat, well my MIL now has my cat that is 11 years old. I had this cat from birth on and when we moved he refused to come along. He would find a way out of the house and return to the old house which is right next door to my MIL so for the past 4 years she has kept him. I go down there and help her bath him and give him medication when he needs it. The problem is he is looking so old and fragile. He stays with an eye infection that me and the vet can't clear up.
2169449 tn?1358489923 I take Zyrtec 10 mg tablet daily im allergic to my cat/ seasonal allergies etc.
Avatar f tn over the next couple weeks i started getting vertigo whenever it felt like my ear was starting to open it would last 2 hours to 10 hours, not getting any answers from my doctor, i went to the emergency rm.
Avatar f tn I was told with my first they don't develop allergies until the age of 1 or 2 yrs. I can't remember which. It's been 5 yrs ago lol. Having a cat will actually help build up their immune system.
Avatar n tn I know this question may sound ridiculous but are people with hiv more prone to allergies? I've been having allergies for the past month or so to my cat or something in my house that i have never had a problem with before. Could this be a sign that i have hiv? I've only had one high risk behavior in my life and that was about 9 months ago when a condom broke on me. THe girl said she is 100 percent sure she has nothing but that is not really enough assurance for me.
Avatar n tn Some allergen exposure control methods are to clean very well daily (vacuum, sweep, dust), keep the cat out of your bedroom, wash your hands after playing with the cat, and shower before bed. If you can train the cat to tolerate a bath that would be beneficial as well. Otherwise you could try wiping its coat with a damp cloth regulary. There are ways to live with pet allergies and keep the pet.
Avatar f tn hey guys, I'm 4 weeks pregnant and the whole time I've been getting sinus allergies from mine and my partners dogs!!
Avatar m tn I've developed severe allergies since moving in with my girlfriend who has a cat and a dog. So severe that I am constantly sick whenever home, find myself waking up in the middle of the night gasping for air (asthma - I have an inhaler), and hacking up a lung in the mornings. We've tried vacuuming more and bathing the animals but it being a small town home, living in close quarters, it does not seem to help. Now we are looking at me moving out and starting allergy shots.
Avatar n tn When I went home I played with my cat and the allergies returned. What could have caused this and should I adopt a new cat if I somehow now have cat allergies?
7639611 tn?1392877261 I am a 27-year-old woman and this is my first winter in Colorado, I moved here from New York. I have a long history of asthma and allergies, particularly to pollen, dust mites, and pet dander. My asthma is controlled with Flovent. In the past, I haven't even needed Flovent but use it now because I live with a year and a half-old cat. (I've lived with this cat their whole life.
