Common Questions and Answers about Cat allergies later in life

cat-allergies

440120 tn?1211724496 I've recently been to an allergist because of newly acquired allergies. I'm 43. I developed an allergy to cats in my 20s after having cats since I was a child. I got a new kitten and found that her saliva gave me hives. Since then I've always had a mild cat allergy. I was tested and found allergic to cats and dogs and a mild reaction to milk. Everything else was negative.
Avatar f tn He is now 20 and seems to be able to tolerate dogs in small doses but NOT cat hair of any kind. Wondering if this is a lifelong affliction.
Avatar f tn Is it possible to develop an allergy to animals later in life? Or do I suddenly have new allergies? Any ideas from anyone? I would love to get this over with! Thanks for the help.
Avatar m tn This very well could be allergies, but are the symptoms bothersome enough to treat would be a good question. If your nose isn't running, eyes watery and itichy, congested, sore throat... It would probably be best to avoid medications and use some life style methods to start with 1) Sinus Rinses bottle (my absolute favorite allergy treatment). Washes the gunk right out of there.
Avatar f tn Also seemed to develop severe hayfever in the same year having never had it before so, yes you can get allergies later in life although, I have never heard of this from anyone else except mum
Avatar n tn He also has a very damp nose and he does seem to get seasonal allergies. Could the lack of interest in eating be caused by allergies? Or do you have any other ideas? I have another vet appointement for him this coming Friday, but would greatly appreciate any insight you may have. Thank you.
Avatar n tn I'm a 20 y/o female 140lb.. no history of obesity, smoking, vaping, drugs, drinking, asthma or allergies and I haven't had any recent respiratory illnesses. I do have a history of anxiety and panic attacks. In the past 3 or so weeks I've had problems breathing on and off. A few weeks ago, out of no where, I started feeling like I was suffocating or like I couldn't breathe. It felt like my nose and throat were closing and it was hard to get air in.
Avatar f tn I am suffering from something similar with my new kitten (he's 5 mo.). He was an outside cat the first 4 mo. or so of his life. This year here in central Tx. the pollen and other allergens have been horrendous. A friend on here helped me with understanding this. The cat licks his fur..then carries the allergen in his mouth and licks his fur again. Mine even scratches me on the hands and I think, transfers the residue from his claws to me producing little red itchy whelps on my hands.
Avatar n tn My cat has been sneezing and having nasal discharge for a month now. She has no other symptoms. She plays, she eats well. Just sneezes and has nasal drainage. Her eyes are good. No swollen or runny eyes. Is this allergies? I noticed she usually only sneezes when her nose touches objects or she sniffs. Sometimes mucous comes out with the sneeze.
Avatar m tn t know why that is impacting his life, but it sounds like the cat has anxiety. Usually if the cat has food allergies, they will scratch around their neck, top of their head and possibly around their face. It could also be allergies from something else, such as fleas, flea bites or dust. This is harder to determine and may have to be discovered by a vet. If they feel that is the reason, they can give the cat a shot that will temporarily relieve the itching for about a month.
Avatar f tn I have a cat that is almost 18 years old. He has always been a scar that hides from everyone. He has been hanging out with us and around the dogs and is really stuffy. He has a lot of snot in his nose, it is hard for him to breathe, he gags and coughs and has runny eyes. My husband just thinks he is old with allergies but I'm concerned. I dissolve his food in water and crush it up and he drinks and eats fine. Not sure what to do? Can I give him something for the allergies?
Avatar f tn Hello, Cat allergen, the allergy causing material from cats, is not cat hair, but rather a protein present in the dander and saliva of cats. These allergens become airborne as microscopic particles, which when inhaled into the nose or lungs can produce allergic symptoms. You can confirm whether you are allergic to cats by getting allergy testing done.Skin tests and blood tests like RAST are done for this purpose.Pls consult an allergist and get them done.
Avatar f tn Allergies have a genetic basis but not always to the same allergen. Two parents with allergies (50% chance of developing allergies), one parent 30%. It is possible that it is an allergy, however make sure the cat wasn't bathed with anything, I reacted with hives once to the shampoo I used on a puppy at work.

746512 tn?1388807580 Alright, need some input or personal experience. This is the three year in a row that my allergies/asthma (or non-asthma who knows) is getting worse from middle of november into december. This can't be due to the cats since I am down one cat now and I have NO ALLERGIES in the spring with increased shedding. It is worse when I go outside and if I'm in and out at work or if it's busy and the door is constantly opened and closed I also have worsening symptoms.
Avatar f tn I hate to say this, but it sounds as though your cat has multiple conditions, infections, and inflamations and possible cancer that is affecting multiple internal organs. I suspect the prednisone is to help delay symptoms and pain by managing the inflamations. In most cases, steroids are not advised long term, but in this case, it could well be the best course of action to prolong kitty's life and keep him comfortable.
Avatar f tn How do y'all deal with cat allergies?!?!? I've just recently become super allergic to my best friends cat's and I wanna be able to go see her without her cats killing me!!! (or me wanting to kill myself for that matter!) It's really bad, and my eyes, ears, throat, nose and basically whole body have really become anti-cats lately :( What should I do?!?!?! Thanks for the tips and suggestions friends!
Avatar f tn so animals and me go together My dad grew up with a cat allergy he couldnt be in a house where cats lived...he would get itchy, cough and sneeze but he grew out of it, because we now have four and they don't bother him...the last two years or so whenever i am near the cats i get the same symptoms my eyes water, cough, stuffy nose its like a sudden cold. Is it possible that i have received the same allergy my dad had? are allergics hereditary?
Avatar n tn Otodectes, Cheyletiella, Scabies, etc, ringworm and other fungal infections, allergies (allergies to food can occur anytime in the life of a cat), bacterial skin infections, endocrine disorders and more. Ringworm, and some mites can be transmitted to people. Frontline does not treat mites. The topical: "Revolution" is for fleas, ticks, ear mites, and scabies, so it might be a good idea to switch to Revolution for a couple of months.
637356 tn?1301924822 s funny you mention that about the similarities. When I had my cat, Magnum, put down in June of 2004, we got Daisy a month later and she reminded me of him so much in her personality and I thought the same thing - but she was born before he passed. Unfortunately, we're going to lose her young. As you probably know, we just found out she has terminal cancer. It's so difficult! But, I'm enjoying my time with her while I can!
740516 tn?1360942486 Here its THE TOP TOP - the one sold in the best places and the one EVERYBODY ( vets also) calls " the best a cat can get - give it for them if you could afford - and sorry if you cant..." I m not sure we could substitute it for another equal - not to mention for something better.Royal Canin is already a quite expensive food - and together with Hills /Science Diet ( that I learned from you at MH is NOT GOOD as well) are the BEST ones you can get on local pet places.
Avatar f tn in july of 08 i woke up one morning, my right ear starting feeling as if it was tightening all of a sudden, then i started getting dizzy and feeling sick to my stomach, it was the starting of vertigo, which i had never had or heard of before...my husband took me immediately to the doctor, he checked me and said i am swollen in nose and glands, he gave me meclizine and told me to take it every 8 hours....that was all!..
Avatar n tn I know this question may sound ridiculous but are people with hiv more prone to allergies? I've been having allergies for the past month or so to my cat or something in my house that i have never had a problem with before. Could this be a sign that i have hiv? I've only had one high risk behavior in my life and that was about 9 months ago when a condom broke on me. THe girl said she is 100 percent sure she has nothing but that is not really enough assurance for me.
Avatar n tn hi. we just got a kitten, and although i lived all my life in my partents house with a cat, i seem to have developped a pet allergie. i have itchy eyes, sneezing, easy headaches, difficulty in breathing, sensation of a burning nose. i started taking some allergie stop medicine and use some spray to decongesionate my nose. they work, in big lines, very good, my question is: for how long can i still use this medicine? do not want to abuse it. how expensive are the allergie stop shots?
