Common Questions and Answers about Cat allergies in my house

Avatar f tn Sniffles, I think you got that name regarding the allergies eh? First off, if your friend don't mind, make sure the cats can be brushed. You might or might not know this, but it's not the hair that we are allergic to, it's the cat's saliva. They clean themselves with the saliva and then it gets on the hair. So it's not just the cat/s, it's anything the cat licks or gets the hair after it cleans itself on. Brushing the cat before and after visits will help.
Avatar f tn so animals and me go together My dad grew up with a cat allergy he couldnt be in a house where cats lived...he would get itchy, cough and sneeze but he grew out of it, because we now have four and they don't bother him...the last two years or so whenever i am near the cats i get the same symptoms my eyes water, cough, stuffy nose its like a sudden cold. Is it possible that i have received the same allergy my dad had? are allergics hereditary?
Avatar f tn Hello, Cat allergen, the allergy causing material from cats, is not cat hair, but rather a protein present in the dander and saliva of cats. These allergens become airborne as microscopic particles, which when inhaled into the nose or lungs can produce allergic symptoms. You can confirm whether you are allergic to cats by getting allergy testing done.Skin tests and blood tests like RAST are done for this purpose.Pls consult an allergist and get them done.
1756384 tn?1312562154 Even though I vacuum and dust continually!, cat hair gets up my nose, in my throat and "jumps" on my legs, makes me itch on my face and also seems to cause my itching uinder my breast area, around where my underwear where it is tight around the creases of my skin( inside thigh area for example). It also makes my mood suck! I have been on Singulair for one week. daily saline nose rinses, veramist nose spray. It seemed to help a little bit but now not much.
Avatar n tn I don't know what the discharge is or what it means. I had to try a few different kinds of cat foods before I found one that my cat likes that she isn't allergic to. My cat is allergic to grains.
Avatar n tn Some ideas for the skin condition are that your new puppy could have brought in some ecto-parasites into the house and these have infested your cat, or your cat could have developed food allergies (which can occur at any age), or this could be psychogenic alopecia, in that she is pulling out the hair due to stress or depression (possibly from the loss of your 13 year old dog and the arrival of the new puppy). I don't like the idea that she has become boney either.
203342 tn?1328737207 The reason I'm asking this is my allergies have been just wild the last few weeks, and it seems to be when I'm in the house. I'm sneezing, congested, itchy, etc., When I'm out I don't notice it as much but as soon as I'm back home it seems to come right on me. So, there's something in the house, something new I'm assuming, that I'm reacting to. The only thing new I can think of is my son's new cat he brought back home with him.
362249 tn?1441315018 Thats a really great idea I should ask! I dont feel my allergies are severe my SIL has had cats in her house and my allergies were not "killing me" where i couldnt stand it! sometimes i feel the need to get up and wash my hands but nothing too bad!! I do think if I follow the advice online about vacuuming my carpet and maybe getting a humidifier then i would be ok! they say its the dander released into the air that gets you!
Avatar n tn Hi, my cat started to loose weight and go bald and scabby on his ears a couple of weeks ago, he's been to the vets who gave him intibiotics which have done nothing. The baldness is now spreading across his head and down his neck and he seems to have a really hot head/ be burning up in the evenings. I've read about mange on several websites and they all seem to say that it is incredibly itchy but he hasn't once scratched at it.
Avatar f tn My cat is 18 months old and has started to rip her fur out above her tail, her eyes and down her front leg, she only started doing this when I moved house and got another cat, is this normal?
Avatar m tn itching ears(if there are NO mites) are caused by allergies...and allergies are caused mainly by grains in the food, change to a GRAIN FREE CANNED food. NO dry food and these symptoms would most likely go away.. http://www.medhelp.org/posts/Cats/CAT-Allergies/show/1967931 ps.I DO NOT agree with the so called natural remedies mentioned, these can be ingested when a cat licks themselves and many products like these are dangerous...
Avatar f tn ve been having to wash and wipe what seems to be spider webs strung across my face for 4 years now. It started gradual over time like cat hair in my eyes.( don't own a cat). over the years the strands have gotten longer. now they stretch all the way across my face. Just like getting clothes lined across the face by a spider web strand. For 4 years now, I'm just about to loose my mind. If I haven't already. Been to pcp, ent,.
440120 tn?1211724496 I have had cats my whole life and they usually have slept in my bed at one time or the other. Since losing my beloved cat in Hurricane Dennis I haven't had another cat in 3years. I had my appendix removed last August. I mentioned that because of the mystery purpose of the appendix in the human body. I recently acquired a new 7wk old kitten and for the first week I had it,I showed no signs of an allergy.
Avatar f tn If you work in a house where the lady owns cats, and now you are itching, you could be. It could also be an allergy to something else that you are exposed to in her house (for example, if doing cleaning, maybe you are allergic to the cleaning product used in that location but nowhere else, or if you were a painter and using a specific product in her house that you don't use elsewhere, it might be the product). Cats have saliva that gives some people a strong allergic reaction.
326352 tn?1310994295 The daugher with the issues just turned 2, was diagnosed with asthma about 6-8 months ago (does breathing treatments regularly with Albuteral). She was allergy tested yesterday and came up with a 4/5 allergy to cats. She has moderate to severe eczema being treated with topical corticosteriods (Elidel, Elocon, something else) and has now been prescribed what is probably the REST of the list of cortocosteroids by the allergist. We've tried Singular in the past, but it made her mean.
Avatar f tn Defintely the right choice to get rid of the cat (coming from someone with two cats and cat allergies), she is too young to have to deal with severe allergies. Do as much prevention with the dust allergies as well and hopefully the severity of the reactions with colds/flu will decrease.
Avatar f tn Allergies have a genetic basis but not always to the same allergen. Two parents with allergies (50% chance of developing allergies), one parent 30%. It is possible that it is an allergy, however make sure the cat wasn't bathed with anything, I reacted with hives once to the shampoo I used on a puppy at work.
Avatar f tn Thirdly, if you have fleas outside, and your cat goes in and out, then you have fleas in your house. If you cat is allergic to fleas and is getting sores from flea bites, then she has fleas and is bringing them into the house. If she doesn't have fleas, then the sores are not from flea bites and are most likely from the flea treatments. Either way the solution is to get rid of the fleas in your house, keep you cat indoors, and stop using flea treatments on her.
Avatar n tn I know this question may sound ridiculous but are people with hiv more prone to allergies? I've been having allergies for the past month or so to my cat or something in my house that i have never had a problem with before. Could this be a sign that i have hiv? I've only had one high risk behavior in my life and that was about 9 months ago when a condom broke on me. THe girl said she is 100 percent sure she has nothing but that is not really enough assurance for me.
Avatar f tn My brother has been dealing with constant nerve pain in his arms. Doctors have been unable to find the cause. Along with the nerve pain, he has had swollen glands in his neck the whole time. This tells me his body is trying to fight something off. Here’s the kicker, he has lots of allergies and is highly allergic to cats... and he has a cat.
Avatar f tn Okay I have cats and my husband changes the cat box for me but my mom has a lot of cats and I never changed the cat boxes at her house but I could smell them ( she is also never home and leaves them there at her house with nobody there with them) she would clean the house but I still could smell it she also had a dog in the house.
Avatar n tn t see anything. Not even a little dandruff or dry skin. Plus I have 3 other animals in the house, and none of them are showing any symptoms. He has an extremely healthy coat, very shiny and clean. He does shed somewhat heavily, but nothing I'd consider excessive or hair loss. No red spots or bumps either. So that seems to rule out allergies, bugs of any kind, and dry skin. I'm really at a loss here, I just don't know what else it could be.
Avatar n tn Once in a while one will find its way in the living area and within minutes my cat kills it. A couple months ago my cat started to get bad respirtory problems and died. My doctor told me what happened to my cat and my issues is not caused from the bats. Today I went for an eye exam and the eye doctor told me I have scars on my right eye caused from fungus from bird or bat droppings. Of course Im freaking out and thinking about walking away and giving it to the bank.
Avatar n tn she lives with multiple cats and lots of other types of pets.we do not give her flea medioson because she is an indoor cat. 1 cat in our house is an out door cat, the rest arn't.( for the past couple months she has also been peeing all around my house) please help me!
1116122 tn?1268496794 I have no intention of getting rid of my cat, however, since this is the best my allergies have been around pets in years. Other than Zyrtec, are there allergy shots covered by insurance that I could take, or other allergy medications that are prescription? My insurance company stopped covering Allegra, which was perfect (bummer). Thanks for your help in advance.
