Well, the advice was to get rid of the cat. However, there are other children involved in this situation. So we are asking if anyone has used any of the allergen neutralizers, tannic acid, special baths... that are available. We're looking to find a good product that will help but not eliminate the situation within our household. So, taking docs advice on getting rid of the cat is not going to happen. Looking for other alternatives. Got any?

Savas is right. Steroids are a "band-aid" treatment. They work temporarily, but only because they set up a false immune system for the body. Once they start to wear off and the body's own immune system kicks back in, the allergies are back in force because the animal's own immune system can't deal with them. Also, while cats tolerate steroids a LOT better than dogs do, eventually they will probably cause diabetes and a host of other problems.

3 months seems to be an awefully long trial period for something that may not work. If he doesn't respond to treatment within 2 to 3 weeks, then I would haul your son right back in to see his specialist and ask for something else. To leave asthma out of control is not ideal and can set up the lungs for infections. I've been there, and absolutely no fun.

Could not even stay with a cat in the room. I went to an alllergy specialist (in Turkey) and he prepared me a vaccination. It was not sold in the pharmacies, it was something he prepared). I did the vaccination for 4 years and my allergy is more bearable now. If I am in a cat environment I take my allergy pill and I am OK.. maybe you should change your doctor and take second opinion??

itching ears(if there are NO mites) are caused by allergies...and allergies are caused mainly by grains in the food, change to a GRAIN FREE CANNED food. Hi Kiki, My cat was just dx'd with herpes in her eyes. For years, we too, thought it was allergies, but no. According to my vet, herpes is very common in cats. The way I figured out what was possibly going on with my cat was to google "feline herpes conjunctivitis." Some sites will give you pictures to look at and compare as well as descriptions. Discharge from the eyes have many possible dx's, but a simple blood test will confirm whether your kitty has herpes or not.

hi this is so very common anymore....and almost ALL the time is due to food allergies, mainly grains in their food.(cheap additives). is your kitty fed dry food? these are the worst for allergies. the best possible advice I can give you is to change to a CANNED food with NO grains...kitty's don't like this very much b/c of course like us they love carbs...so its like going from french fries to broccoli, so you can't do it over night.

You also said your asthma flared up since you started taking your children to school on a daily basis. You also said you had a bad asthma flare up in October of last year. My cat has been sneezing and having nasal discharge for a month now. She has no other symptoms. She plays,she eats well. Just sneezes and has nasal drainage. Her eyes are good. No swollen or runny eyes. Is this allergies? I noticed she usually only sneezes when her nose touches objects or she sniffs. Sometimes mucous comes out with the sneeze.

That said, Im going to monitor my cat at all times and not let her be in the nursery or room when baby is napping and so am I. My cat hasnt tried jumping in the crib so Im relieved about that too.

How do y'all deal with cat allergies?!?!? I've just recently become super allergic to my best friends cat's and I wanna be able to go see her without her cats killing me!!! so animals and me go together My dad grew up with a cat allergy he couldnt be in a house where cats lived...he would get itchy, cough and sneeze but he grew out of it, because we now have four and they don't bother him...the last two years or so whenever i am near the cats i get the same symptoms my eyes water, cough, stuffy nose its like a sudden cold. my right eye is itching and burning in the corners. I take Zyrtec 10 mg tablet daily im allergic to my cat/ seasonal allergies etc.

He had the same thing in February, got a shot and it went away. I read that fish based foods can cause allergies. He only eats chicken flavored food but I had just given him a salmon flavored treat a day or so before the lip flare up. Anyway, I know that the vet will not want to give him another steroid shot so soon after the other one. Does this sort of thing usually go away on it's own? He seems fine and is eating and drinking.

I was told with my first they don't develop allergies until the age of 1 or 2 yrs. I can't remember which. It's been 5 yrs ago lol. Having a cat will actually help build up their immune system.
