Cat allergies asthma triggers

Common Questions and Answers about Cat allergies asthma triggers

cat-allergies

Avatar f tn ve heard allergies can be inherited. My dad was allergic to grass as well and highly allergic to cat dander. Asthma triggers can be challenging but knowing what they are and avoiding them as much as possible, I think , is the key. Also, for me, cigarette smoke is a trigger too. I wish you well.
Avatar m tn thanks for your reply.. but my main concern is why can't I breathe?? would a cold do this? would my cat allergies do this? did my asthma come back after 10 yrs because I smoked too much?
Avatar n tn Postnasal drip, asthma, allergies (which can cause both of those problems), GERD, enlarged adenoids/tonsils can all plan a role. Try over the counter cough medicine for 4-5 days and see if that helps (did nothing for my allergy/post nasal drip/asthma cough). Vicks vapour rub was the only thing that would let me sleep for a while back around christmas (before I was diagnosed).
Avatar n tn Moving around and being active even can trigger tightness and shortness of breath with asthma. Allergies can also be triggering it, but I would talk to your allergist how much since you said your only slightly allergic. I am severely allergic to cats and dogs off the charts, have asthma, and currently have a dog and a cat. So far I can't tell whether they are setting my asthma off or not. Sometimes our allergies aren't the trigger and asthma is more intrinsic.
Avatar m tn If your partner has asthma, she should visit a doctor and an allergist to determine what allergies she may have. These allergies can be triggers for asthma. But to answer your question, as far as I know asthma cannot be transmitted from mother to her new born. Be well.
Avatar n tn You need to ask for full pulmonary function tests - including a methacholine challenge test. This gives a much better idea how your lungs behave and whether or not asthma is the correct diagnosis. Another way is to give asthma meds a trial run and see if they help your symptoms - if they greatly help, it is probably asthma. If they do nothing - need to look into something else. I disagree with banshee86 - there is a large spectrum of severity in asthma and something is it not clear.
Avatar n tn However, you can become allergic to them years after, I had my one cat for 10 years before any allergies and 15 years before I developed asthma. If you do get one, try to keep it out of your daughters room so she has a good 8 hours without breathing in tons of cat dander.
Avatar f tn I'm wondering too if milk/nut allergies could be making my asthma worse. I have chest tightness that was helped by singulair, like late in the day and I was on symbicort alone but it wasn't enough at 4 puffs/day. what are your FEV1/FVC scores?
Avatar n tn You would have to discuss this with your doctor to see what treatment is required or if further testing is needed to determine the cause of your shortness of breath/chest tightness. You do have a history of seasonal allergies which is strongly linked to asthma. Not saying that everyone with allergies has asthma, but there is strong connection between the two. Yes allergies can also bring on the symptoms you are describing.
Avatar n tn I oppose the mind set that Asthma triggers should be prevented in asthmatic children. In my practice, children are declared cured if no more triggers exist that can cause asthma attacks. This is achieved by using corticosteroids (oral or inhaled) reducing to zero dose. What is your opinion?
Avatar m tn When I am around common animals that have dander such as dogs, cats, bunnies or hamsters, I begin to develop a slight rash and my eyes swollen and I have an asthma attack. Well, I was around a cat the other day. I was holding it and petting it and stroking it. My left eye slightly swollen and my upper arm had 2 bumbs...I had no asthma. I am usually worse around dogs...but are my allergies starting to get better?
Avatar f tn You know, asthma is closely related to allergies and when allergies of any kind are triggered, asthma can easily kick in too. I found an informative link on this subject which you can visit here: http://www.latexallergylinks.org/paint.html Hope this helps and all my best wishes...
Avatar m tn Dr says allergy can not cause asthma in someone who does not have asthma and that I do not have asthma based on my PFT test. After allergy exposure I have a feeling of inflammation pressure deep in my chest and or narrowing of my airway with flows reduced over 20% on my peak meter, but only to allergy exposure. I've tried inhaled steroids that reversed all feelings of inflammation and albuterol that quickly opens my airway.
Avatar f tn How do y'all deal with cat allergies?!?!? I've just recently become super allergic to my best friends cat's and I wanna be able to go see her without her cats killing me!!! (or me wanting to kill myself for that matter!) It's really bad, and my eyes, ears, throat, nose and basically whole body have really become anti-cats lately :( What should I do?!?!?! Thanks for the tips and suggestions friends!
Avatar f tn Pediatrician has been treating with nasal spray (for minor nasal tissue swelling), nebulizer with albuterol, and most recently claritin. She had allergy test which revealed allergies to milk, peanuts, soy, wheat, corn, eggs. but no environmental triggers. Eliminated those things from her diet for two weeks along with taking allergy meds but no relief. Saw ENT doctor but x-rays revealed nothing abnormal so she determined that it must be the milk allergy.
Avatar f tn I had cat hair allergy and it is much reduced now
9552239 tn?1404989880 I have allergies too and I have asthma. I wish I could tell you when you feel better and feel normal again. You said you had the severe reaction over a week ago. Glad to hear that you are feeling quite a bit better. My best guess would be that it will be a gradual process of feeling better. I am glad you are now carrying a new epipen and a medical bracelet. I wish you well.
Avatar m tn A few months later, the other cat also started having asthma problems, and also got started on steroids. Over the summer of 2011, I went to Washington for about 3 weeks to do some field work (I am a structural geology grad. student). When I got back, I was home for about a month before I had to leave for Minnesota to do some analyses on my rock samples. I remember while my wife was driving me to the airport I had a scratchy throat and felt like I was getting a cold.
Avatar f tn I am wondering if anyone knows if an allergy or sensitivity to red dye 40 could cause acid reflux. I have year round pollen allergies as well as dog allergy and moderate to severe asthma. The reflux triggers my asthma and I end up in a bad flare. Thank you.
Avatar f tn Hello all, I am glad to be here a part of this forum as I get to talk about Asthma and other latest research on asthma. My 4 year kid has been suffering from asthma and every year we end up in the hospital with something that has been complicated by asthma. We have attended the asthma clinic and learned ways to prevent attacks, what triggers attacks etc. I thought I was on top of the asthma until our emergency visit and then I started thinking there was probably a lot more to learn than I knew.
2206935 tn?1373638605 I wasn't born with asthma either, goodguy. I was diagnosed with asthma when I was in my early twenties. As far as whether it will go away when you grow older, every individual is difference. It's important to find out your allergy triggers and try to stay away from the things that trigger your asthma. My dad had asthma too. I don't know if the tendency towards asthma can be inherited. My dad was very allergic to cat dander.
Avatar f tn It can take months for the cat dander to leave the environment so if may slowly get better. Also for me, the dust mites bother my asthma 10 times worse than the cat dander (have 2 cats) even though my skin ***** reaction was higher on cats than dust mites.
Avatar m tn I've developed severe allergies since moving in with my girlfriend who has a cat and a dog. So severe that I am constantly sick whenever home, find myself waking up in the middle of the night gasping for air (asthma - I have an inhaler), and hacking up a lung in the mornings. We've tried vacuuming more and bathing the animals but it being a small town home, living in close quarters, it does not seem to help. Now we are looking at me moving out and starting allergy shots.
Avatar f tn I have been having severe migrains since feb of this year. Im 23 and in pretty good health besides having asthma. They started out coming every couple days then every other day the headache became permanent. It lasts everyday all day. The pain kept getting worse and worse so I finally saw a nurse practitioner about 2 months ago and she put me on Topamax.
Avatar n tn Do you have a good mattress cover to prevent dust mites? I know my asthma is worse when my allergies are acting up. Do you have any food allergies? Have you considered allergy shots for pets, etc? Hopefully this helps. Good luck fellow asthma sufferer!
Avatar m tn Two of the doctors did say her nose was red and inflamed, so she is also being treated for a sinus infection. I know allergies are horrible right now, but she had no symptoms of allergies prior to this (she is on Zyrtec). My concern is the fact that she will respond well to the medications and then she will have a bad flare up. Her pulse ox is always fine and a chest X-Ray came back normal. Could this be an infection that just needs time to clear up?
Avatar f tn I does sound like asthma is a possibility. A chest x-ray is useless in diagnosing asthma. It can show trapped air that may be indicative of asthma, but other conditions result in trapped air as well. Feel better and God bless.
