Carvedilol vs metoprolol in heart failure

Common Questions and Answers about Carvedilol vs metoprolol in heart failure

Avatar m tn So, my cardio took me off of the ramipril and put me on 12.5 mg of metoprolol twice a day and in addition to my 12.5 of HCTZ. However, after a week of feeling exhausted, having a resting heart rate consistently in the low 50s, and not much higher otherwise, I complained during my follow up. My cardio gave me some samples of 10 mg coreg to take once a day and a prescription to fill if the side effects from the metoprolol do not get any better.
Avatar m tn There are a few beta blockers with evidence in heart failure -- they are carvedilol, metoprolol XL, and bisoprolol (not really used in the US). Atenolol does not have any data to support its use in heart failure, so I would recommend a different agent (one of the above). Which one to choose depends on your blood pressure and ability to take twice daily dosing vs once daily. Chlorthalidone is a perfectly fine diuretic, if you have blood pressure room to tolerate it.
Avatar f tn Lisinopril is an ACE inhibitor and the mechanism of the agent is to dilate vessels to reduce hypertension. Metoprolol is in a group of drugs called beta-blockers. Beta-blockers affect the heart and circulation (blood flow through arteries and veins). Metoprolol is used to treat angina and hypertension for high blood pressure. It is also used to treat or prevent heart attack. My regimen is Lisinopril and coreg (beta blocker).
Avatar f tn s troubles, it must be difficult. Can I ask if the doctors told you why he is in heart failure? The quality of his life going forward will depend much on the cause of his condition as there are many treatment options based on the underlying condition.
Avatar f tn It can increase AV conduction time and be somewhat helpful for reducing the heart rate in the setting of Afib/Aflu, and help decrease ectopic atrial activity (PACs and atrial tachycardia). If you have sinus tachycardia and can't tolerate beta blockers, try ivabradine. Another option is to try either a combined alpha and beta blocker to increase peripheral blood flow (like carvedilol or labetalol) or choosing a maximum selective beta blocker like nebivolol or bisoprolol.
Avatar m tn As far as I understand Metoprolol is a Beta Blocker, its main effect is to reduce your heart rate and therefore reduce the volume of blood per minute to be pumped but I do not think that it affects the EF. If you has a history of HBP, chances are that you have some hypertrophy of the left ventricle, this can be the reason for the reduction. Anyway your value is in the normal limit. Do you have a previous value?

Avatar m tn I have recently been prescribed Amlodipine-Benaz 5/10 MG capsules for treatment of hypertension. However, my resting pulse rate has consistently been in the 90's and increasing into the 100's at time, so I have been prescribed Carvedilol to help control the heart rate. My question is, doesn't Carvedilol control hypertension as well...Why should I be taking carvedilol in addition to amliodipine?
907968 tn?1292622204 t know if it was because of that list of problems or what, but he changed the metoprolol to Carvedilol. Then came heart rehab and began to feel perfectly normal. The next time I seen him was just after stopping the heart rehab workouts (no insurance and was/still am looking at a very large bill from the bypass surgery) and was walking up to 2 miles a day and felt like I could walk for miles more. I don't know if it was how I was now feeling or or what but he doubled the dose to 6.25mg.
Avatar f tn The med now is not bringing my heart rate down any where near as well as it was in the beginning. When I first took the drug my heart rate was in the 50s ....now its averaging in a 24hr period about 15 bpms higher thank before. What is going on ? Something doesn't make sense ? Why is this happening ? I do not feel anxious. The metoprolol is not working as well. Has anyone else had experiences where the metoprolol is not working as well after a month.I do not want to increase the dosage.
Avatar n tn EKG taken by cardiologist as precation was normal. Cardiologist is having me drop Cardizem LA (180 mg) for Carvedilol (6.25mg 2x per day). Any reason to think this change could trigger arythmia or something else really kooky? I am told this is an excellent medication and typically very well tolerated. I tried Toprol XL before for several months. Did not tolerate it well, mainly due to severe nightmares. Once removed from the Toprol, nightmares stopped.
Avatar m tn hi im 53 with acute cronic congestive heart failure. my echocardiogram showed dilated cardiomyopathy with ejection fraction of 10% and biatrial enlargement and elevated creatine after cardiac catherization the aortic pressure was 110/77 with a mean of 93 left ventricular pressure was 110/26 descending irregularity these were not flow limiting the left circumflex coronary artery had minimal irregularities and relatively disease free and a nondominant vessel.
Avatar n tn Recently, my PC Dr put a holter monitor on me, and the results was not very good. . .so, they put in a stent, a defibrillator and pace maker (august 13,2010.) They have put me on some new meds (right now I am taking Lisinopril, Carvedilol(Coreg), Lipitor, Lasix(as needed) and asprin, Oh yes, Plavix. The angagram (sp) Indicated I have one artery totaly shut off. They also said my Enjection Fraction was 30. Since I have been back home I have felt terrible, most of the time.
Avatar m tn You have been given wonderful advice, in my opinion. I had my first heart attack at age 60 and received my first stents in the RCA. Like you, I started exercising and could walk a mile in military time and lost enough weight that my BMI is normal, and my cholesterol level was almost identical to yours.
Avatar n tn The doc allowed me to cut the 20mg tablet in half until our next apt at which time he prescribed Carvedilol 25 mg twice a day. Anyone have any insight as to why he might have done that? Particularly since the 10mg Bystolic tablets seemed to be the “sweet spot” in terms of tolerability. And the Bystolic worked very well for my BP. I am a 41 year old male.
Avatar n tn 80 year old woman with hypertension , heart failure, borderline diabetes, history of arrhythmia , thyroid removed, arthritis . Complains of severe back pain, numbness in hands and feet, unsteady on feet (needs walker), incontinence, signs of dementia. My Question: Seemed better on previous medication regime: Norvasc, Lanoxin, Spironolactone, Levothyroxine. Worse on current medication regime: Metoprolol, Benazepril, Isorb Mono Tab, Spironolactone, Simvastatin, Levothyroxine.
Avatar m tn 5 weeks ago I had a mild heart attack and received a stent in the one veinous graft (the 3 arterial grafts were perfectly clear). I have been placed on plavix and 6.25mg 2x/day of carvedilol - and the side effects of carvedilol is my concern. First is the feeling of lightheadedness, which was severe at first, but still remains.
Avatar m tn Hello, my liver has been perfect up until now. Back in June my alt was 16 and my ast was 30 Now On August 28th my alt is 14 and mt ast is 57. I had a colonoscophy on August 2nn and the DR said everything looked great including the liver. I did start taking Carvedilol (Beta Blockers). I was taking Metoprolol before I was was switched. Could this be why my ast levels are up? Everything else is perfect. Should I be worried?

Avatar n tn Alcohol is known to have direct toxic effects on the heart, and in some patients is the sole reason for heart disorder. Carvedilol should be taken with food, but I don't think there's a problem with moderate alcohol drinking while taking the med. But alcohol and plavix should be avoided. Alcohol potentially increases the risk of bleeding within the digestive system (e.g.
Avatar m tn I have come to the conclusion that meds ending in -lol (in your case Carvedilol; in my case Metoprolol; in my husband's case Atenolol) raise blood sugar numbers. It would be wise for you to be checked regularly for diabetes. Good luck.
Avatar m tn Hello Scott, Congestive heart failure causes decreased blood flow to various parts of the body. In your mother's case it is probably accompanied by some amount of anemia, because of the blood loss during surgery or due to her chronic disease. These are the most possible causes of her palpitations (pounding in the chest), low energy and irritability. Hypoglycemia is also a cause, so she can probably be fed small frequent meals.
Avatar m tn That said, carvedilol lowers blood pressure, sometimes to an extreme. Were you taking carvedilol when your heart rate went to 150? After being off carvedilol, what is your blood pressure, and did your heart rate change after being off the drug? I'd ask your doctor if you should have a nuclear stress test to look for a blockage in your heart arteries, and/or a heart echo to look at valves, etc.
1210142 tn?1266077031 since I had MI but not heart failure- is is absolutely necessary to take beta blockers? One of the doctors ordered renin test and the results came today quite high- 28.2, the ratio though is ok.
Avatar f tn I do not like the palpitations and raised heart rate that I get off of my medication. Anyways, she wants me on metoprolol tartrate. Because I have been on the atenolol for 4 years I have concerns. Will this medication treat me the same as the atenolol. Is there a posibility of not being able to take this medication. Does it have the same action as the atenolol? I appreciate and thank whatever answers I can get. Right now I am trying to lower myself off the atenolol.
