Yes it is true that there have been many new drugs after atenolol but atenolol is still prescribed by many doctors as antihypertensives. Newer drugs belonging to the category of beta blockers have come up and these include betaxolol, carvedilol, propranolol, timolol and labetalol.

I have recently been prescribed Amlodipine-Benaz 5/10 MG capsules for treatment of hypertension. However, my resting pulse rate has consistently been in the 90's and increasing into the 100's at time, so I have been prescribed Carvedilol to help control the heart rate. My question is, doesn't Carvedilol control hypertension as well...Why should I be taking carvedilol in addition to amliodipine?
Follow your doc recommendations. but, I imagine you don't have to because you are only switching from one beta-blocker to another. So, you are essentially not lifting the beta-blockade.
Carvedilol belongs to a class of medications known as "beta blockers." Patients who have suffered a heart attack and/or with known coronary artery disease should be on a beta blocker of some sort. Cavedilol is just one of many different types of beta blockers which also has some effects on lowering blood pressure as well as being an important medication for those with a history of heart failure.
There are many beta blockers aside from atenolol you can try. Please ask your physician about other options, and ask if you really need a beta blocker at all.

Does anyone know anything about carvedilol? How safe is it, what are the side effects? Has anyone heard of it being prescribed for tachycardia? HIgh blood pressure?
I am sick of taking/switching medications, most of all I am sick of having tachycardia and believe my heart rate is just naturally higher than others' heart rates.
They told me to stop the calcium channel blocker cold turkey and start the new medication, I thought I was suppossed to wean off of my current medication.
My dad was recently diagnosed with CHF and was given Carvedilol. He is taking 12.5 mg twice a day. His blood pressure is well controlled now that he is on the pill, but there have been 3 times when his blood pressure drops way too low and he feels like fainting. Is that normal?How long does it usually take to get used to the drug?
I am on Crestor, Atenolol, Cartia and Digoxin and Synthroid. I had Tachicardia and Atrial Fib.
I have symptoms of shortness of breath, a dry cough, extreme fatigue, short term memory loss, extreme joint pain and stiffness, poor balance, weakness at times, vision gets dark at times, neck and throat soreness. I was switch from Toprol which caused my bp to drop too low and made me dizzy. My EP switched me to Atenolol which, he said, does not cross the blood-brain barrier and not cause the dizziness. I took it alone for 7 years and controlled afib with it.
The problem is the effect this has on my sense of well-being. Though I'm SO thankful for the effects of atenolol, I'm afraid, as I don't really know what/how harmful these episodes are. I've subsequently developed panic attacks, where b/f I had no anxiety issues. I’d let others convince me that this was only anxiety & tried Lexapro (exacerbated rhythm) & Klonopin (couldn't tolerate sedation).
I am on 6.25 mg carvedilol twice a day. I am not physically restricted - I walk 1 mile or more day and do 10 minutes of other light exercises most days. My BP runs under 120/80 most of the time. I understand carvedilol helps prevent stiffening of the heart muscle and can help restore LV function to some degree. How specially, so it do this? What is the biochemical mechanism?
That said, carvedilol lowers blood pressure, sometimes to an extreme. Were you taking carvedilol when your heart rate went to 150? After being off carvedilol, what is your blood pressure, and did your heart rate change after being off the drug?
I'd ask your doctor if you should have a nuclear stress test to look for a blockage in your heart arteries, and/or a heart echo to look at valves, etc.

may i ask what are the common side effects when taking beta blockers (carvedilol)? i am taking just 12.5mg daily and i feel some irregularities like palps, fatigue, headaches, dizzy. i am not sure if these are side effects. im 24yo and dont smoke or drink but having a bp of 140/100. then down to 120/80 when taking 12.5mg carv daily. thank you for the knowledge.
I had an EP study 5 days ago that showed the problem area either inside the muscle or on the outside. Dr. tried for 2 hours, but couldn't ablate from the inside. Very disappointing day. He started me on Flecainide-I had vision problems and migraines for the first few days, but better now (I'm keeping my fingers crossed!). He also has me on 25mg atenolol. The Dr. mentioned another procedure that's more invasive. I looked it up & it's Epicardial Ablation.
