Carvedilol conversion to metoprolol

Common Questions and Answers about Carvedilol conversion to metoprolol

coreg

Avatar m tn My cardio gave me some samples of 10 mg coreg to take once a day and a prescription to fill if the side effects from the metoprolol do not get any better. The side effects from the metoprolol have gotten a little better, though as I type this my heart rate is 52 bpm. Does any one have any comments on the pros and cons of carvedilol versus metoprolol? I'm not sure I want to switch if the side effects will be the same. Does anyone have experience with metoprolol?
Avatar f tn Lisinopril is an ACE inhibitor and the mechanism of the agent is to dilate vessels to reduce hypertension. Metoprolol is in a group of drugs called beta-blockers. Beta-blockers affect the heart and circulation (blood flow through arteries and veins). Metoprolol is used to treat angina and hypertension for high blood pressure. It is also used to treat or prevent heart attack. My regimen is Lisinopril and coreg (beta blocker).
Avatar n tn The "lol" is in fact the beta blockers. I do know sotalol is a beta blocker but nearly in a class by itself. Because of it being sotatolol, I would want specific detailed info from an md and likely a pharmacist too. But.. changing from propranolol to metoprolol and later to carvedilol did not take much of a transition. I didn't have to wean slowly because the beta blockage was still in effect and so not running away with the rhythms...
Avatar m tn I had a colonoscophy on August 2nn and the DR said everything looked great including the liver. I did start taking Carvedilol (Beta Blockers). I was taking Metoprolol before I was was switched. Could this be why my ast levels are up? Everything else is perfect. Should I be worried?

Avatar n tn EKG taken by cardiologist as precation was normal. Cardiologist is having me drop Cardizem LA (180 mg) for Carvedilol (6.25mg 2x per day). Any reason to think this change could trigger arythmia or something else really kooky? I am told this is an excellent medication and typically very well tolerated. I tried Toprol XL before for several months. Did not tolerate it well, mainly due to severe nightmares. Once removed from the Toprol, nightmares stopped.
Avatar m tn As far as I understand Metoprolol is a Beta Blocker, its main effect is to reduce your heart rate and therefore reduce the volume of blood per minute to be pumped but I do not think that it affects the EF. If you has a history of HBP, chances are that you have some hypertrophy of the left ventricle, this can be the reason for the reduction. Anyway your value is in the normal limit. Do you have a previous value?
Avatar m tn I'm a 31 year old male with high blood pressure, anxiety, and a few recorded PVCs. I recently had a stress test with some ST depressions, which the cardiologists suspected to be a false positive. Nonetheless, to be on the safe side I was given a nuclear stress test - everything turned out just fine, my cardiologist said my heart is perfectly normal. The only problem was the high heart rate - when I went to get on the treadmill my heart rate jumped from 90 bpm to 145 bpm.
907968 tn?1292622204 t know if it was because of that list of problems or what, but he changed the metoprolol to Carvedilol. Then came heart rehab and began to feel perfectly normal. The next time I seen him was just after stopping the heart rehab workouts (no insurance and was/still am looking at a very large bill from the bypass surgery) and was walking up to 2 miles a day and felt like I could walk for miles more. I don't know if it was how I was now feeling or or what but he doubled the dose to 6.25mg.
Avatar f tn I am taking 100mg a day of Metoprolol since I had open heart to remove a benin tumor. Although my BP was elevated at some parts of the day I was not on any meds prior to surgery. Unbeknownst to me, my surgeon and others. I was having A fib prior to surgery. I still had it after the surgery too. I started out like you on 25 mg a day of Metoprolol now I am up to 100mg. My HR still gets up sometimes to the 90's I also developed pericardial effusion.
Avatar m tn I have come to the conclusion that meds ending in -lol (in your case Carvedilol; in my case Metoprolol; in my husband's case Atenolol) raise blood sugar numbers. It would be wise for you to be checked regularly for diabetes. Good luck.
Avatar n tn I change last week from Metroprol to Metoprolol Tartrate because te Tartrate is $4.00. so maybe that new med is what is causing the issue.
Avatar f tn I have been taking Metoprolol for about 1 year. Started at 25 mg. I weighed 170lbs at ~5'5, October 2007. Upped to 50mg. Gained to 195, March 2008. Upped to 100mg. Gained to 220lbs, July 2008. I am now at 220 still at 100mg. I have been experiencing depression & anxiety while on this med. Never really before since taking it, maybe minor depression in middle school/high school. I am now 19 & have pretty severe depression with no mental health insurance.
Avatar m tn Ask your doctor about switching from carvedilol to Bystolic. I was on metoprolol (another BB) for 5 years and experienced exactly the same symptoms as you with regard to leg pain and exhaustion. I am a former competitive cyclist. Carvedilol is a non-specific BB, acting strongly on both beta-1 and beta-2 receptors, and also acting on the alpha-1 receptor. Most of the benefits of BB's come from their beta-1 selectivity, and most of the side effects are due to the beta-2 selectivity.
Avatar m tn You might ask your Cardiologist to put you on 3.175mg carvedilol twice a day instead of 6.25 twice a day if this is your first experience with it. It is a powerful drug. I started with the 3.175 dose X 2, and it gave me a lot of symptoms such as exhaustion and I do recall a lazy peristalsis (swallowing) issue, but my body got used to it, and he doubled it, then doubled it again.
Avatar m tn There are a few beta blockers with evidence in heart failure -- they are carvedilol, metoprolol XL, and bisoprolol (not really used in the US). Atenolol does not have any data to support its use in heart failure, so I would recommend a different agent (one of the above). Which one to choose depends on your blood pressure and ability to take twice daily dosing vs once daily. Chlorthalidone is a perfectly fine diuretic, if you have blood pressure room to tolerate it.
Avatar f tn I had about 10 episodes of 140 BPN over ten years with no more complications than emergency room trips for conversion or conversion at home with propafenone. My particular type was atrial flutter which appears to have been cured by ablation a little over a year ago. If your heart is otherwise healthy it is a condition that can be managed (but certainly no enjoyed!) https://en.wikipedia.
Avatar n tn My doctor is recommending cardiac conversion. I do not want to do an invasive procedure if possible. Is there a non invasive option for me?
Avatar f tn I still want children very badly and was told that basically, there were meds that I can take instead of Lisinopril, but I would have to stop taking Coreg. Of course, I would just have to see how I would do without Coreg... Are there any alternatives to Coreg?
Avatar m tn The main effect of Carvedilol it is not to low the BP but to reduce the heart rate. Does he take other medication? It normally takes 3-4 weeks to get used to the medication, anyway, if his body behaves like mine, days of low BP can appear at any moment .... I am on the same dose of it for more than 4 years and right now I am having days in 80/40 range, but I am in a lot of other medications. Jesus.
603838 tn?1238534975 I have been on a beta blocker (metoprolol) for about 8 years now and I also take Gabapentin to level out my moods. I have read that both of these meds can interfere with conversion of T4 to T3.
Avatar m tn It has a half life between 6 to 10 hours. So, if you take 50mg, this will reduce to about 12mg in your system after a day. Then just 3mg after 2 days. So I would say after 3 days your body won't notice it being there.
907968 tn?1292622204 Since both started getting bad about the same time and just shortly after starting Carvedilol I can easily make the connection. However, they could be unrelated to carvedilol and the timing could be a coincidence. Before I make an appointment to have a chat with my Dr. I'd like to hear from anyone that has had these symptom and that were known to be directly connected to carvedilol. Assuming there are none here, Does anyone have any info to share about these?
Avatar m tn I had my first and only atrial fib conversion last month. I had a large dinner and went to lay down at 10 pm when I flipped over to my left side and I felt the flutter. I estimate it was >180 bpm. I laid flat and used vagal maneuvers to get it to the 140's. I went to the ER and was in aib w/ rvr. 140-180's. It took 22 hours to break into a SR and only after a sneezing fit. My question is for an isolated AFIB that was vagally triggered why should someone have to take metoprolol?
