Besides sugar, simple carbs are a diabetics worst enemy as they quickly raise glucose [blood sugar] levels. Fruits must be eaten with other foods to slow the absorption of fructose [fruit sugar]. Caution with tropical fruits as they contain large amounts of fructose - pineapple, mangoes, papayas. Berries are healthier.

Type 2 diabetes is a condition in which the body produces enough or even excessive insulin but can't utilize it very well due to insulin resistance. Over time (many years in most cases) the body of a type 2 diabetic produces less and less insulin and that is when insulin injections are considered, not based on any particular A1C.

Avatar f tn All diabetics are a bit different in what we can eat and still keep our blood glucose in target range. In general most of us find we need to eliminate sugar and greatly reduce carbohydrate intake especially things like white bread, cereal rice and pasta. The best way to know what works for YOU is to try a certain food and test your blood glucose two hours after eating and make sure you stay within target.
Avatar f tn I think you should watch your carbs and try and get those numbers lower, it will only be better for you....no matter which list of "numbers" you look at as normal for a diabetic....you should strive for lower....however if they are within the numbers listed(which most doctors I know use for diabetics) then don't stress over it. Do your best. Exercise and watch those carbs. Learn to read labels. Good luck!
Avatar f tn In any case, take this number as a trigger to look at your health, cutting carbs and particularly refined carbs and processed foods, losing weight if you need to, and exercising consistently. please ask if you have more questions and we will be happy to respond.
Avatar n tn My eight year old son, who was diagnosed more than two years ago, does follow a set meal and snack routine. He has breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus snacks at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and before bedtime. He's to have 50-60 grams of carbs at meal time, and 20-30 at snack time. The only restriction he is under is that he must drink diet soda or Crystal Light (no regular drinks with sugar -- except juice when he is low), and must use sugar-free pancake syrup.
Avatar n tn Along with avoiding sugary foods a low to no carb diet plan is recommended for t2 diabetics. Carbs to t2 diabetics are the same as sugar - elevates our glucose [blood sugar] above and beyond acceptable levels. A very good place to look for low carb recipes is the Atkins [diet] web site http://tinyurl.com/atkins-recipes . Replace sugar with artificial sweeteners such as Splenda or Stevia.
370181 tn?1595629445 In fact, doctors recommend that carbs account for 40%-60% of your daily caloric intake, but not all carbs are the same. There are good carbs [complex] and there are bad carbs [simple]. The carbohydrates that we consume are generally one of of two types. The complex ones found in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and starches. These are the good guys. The simple ones found in table sugar and processed foods are the bad guys.
1412179 tn?1281699815 The best way to address this would be to eat less carbohydrates at breakfast time (eat protein, fat, and only a little complex carbs), and also take a walk straight after breakfast (or do some other exercise) to help burn the sugars. Others may add in here.
Avatar m tn One hour after eating a Subway sandwich (102 g of carbs), my glucose was 159 mg/dL, but two hours later it came down to 96 mg/dL. I try to eat healthy and lift weights 4 times a week. Some diabetics can tolerate this amount of carbs and carb sugars while others not. The only way for you to know is to test b4 eating [preprandial] and 2-3 hrs after eating [postprandial]. I's best to eat fruits prior to a workout. Your body will burn of glycogen as energy is needed. Also, eat fruits which are low in fructose such as melons and berries.
Avatar n tn So some diabetics eat few carbs while others eat lots of carbs. The old diet charts that we used to base our insulin dosages on are not used when we do this. The point of this explanation is that there is no reason from the diabetes perspective why he cannot eat as few or as many carbs as he wishes. But this is ONLY true if he is adjusting his insulin dose properly for those dietary variations.
Avatar f tn (fruit, unfortunately, is high in carbs and tends to spike the blood sugar of Type 2 diabetics). A blood sugar of 160 is too high; you should be testing at two hours and by three it should be significantly down from that. Rather than look for fad diets, it is much more useful to make these changes, add regular exercise and then test regularly two hours after meals to see how various foods affect your blood sugar to get it under 140.

Carbs and sugar most of all are truly addictive. When you eliminate the sugar and reduce your intake of carbs you may find you have a significant reduction in cravings. Then you just need to deal with the psychological aspects.
Avatar f tn It's diabetes that develops in pregnant woman. Many cam control their sugars with diet and exercise, but some Mom's like "normal" diabetics need medication and insulin.
