4054761 tn?1349368749 I agree that most diets that deprive one of a complete food group are not good, because the body needs the nutrients from all groups. Plus once the diet it kicked to the curb, the weight usually comes back. There are 2 types of carbohydrates; the simple ones, that include things made from refined sugar, flour, white rice, etc. These carbs raise your blood sugar quickly, and if not burned off right away, will be stored as fat.
1715838 tn?1330648200 Hopefully others who use the MH Diabetes tracker will come along and provide you with tips. In the meantime you can download the Atkins carb tool by Googling "atkins carbohydrate counter list". The food list is quite extensive and detailed and is 106 pages.
Avatar f tn Counting carbs can be done with radical protein diets such as Atkins, but the weight loss won't last. Remember that all vegetables are carbs, too. Different people require different diets. Avoiding grains, for example -- whole grains are actually fine, it's the simple carbs that are the problem. Permanent weight maintenance is more complicated than a fad diet. See a holistic nutritionist and figure out what suits you best -- might be a vegetarian diet high in grains.
Avatar m tn OH !!! AND I GREATLY INCREASED MY ACTIVITY LEVEL !!! (But if Mr. Atkins knew about the bad carbs I *DO* eat sometimes, he'd roll over in his grave, so SHHH !!!
451075 tn?1210258648 And I actually feel better eating low-carb! When I go back to carbs I feel sluggish and tired. Carbs are necessary to your body, though...hence the LOW carb, not NO carb. I'm with Gaui in sticking to veggies (add corn to the high carb list) and fiber-rich fruits.
1159480 tn?1263405571 m glad to see some positive talk about the Atkins/lo carb diet. I went on the Atkins diet about 6 years ago. I lost about 50 lbs. Once you get used to it, it's easy. And, I kept the weight off for the 6 years. I only gained back a few pounds when I started eating carbs again. You really get used to not eating alot of bread and sweets and it does not bother you after awhile. Unfortunately, what killed me was menopause. I gave in to the cravings for sweets and gained more weight back.
764257 tn?1234724152 I agree with the above. Talk to your doctor about whether you should try Atkins or not. I was on Atkins for approximately 5 months (something happened and I completely stopped eating, but it isn't related to the diet). The results were fantastic. By the end of the second week I (a carb lover) didn't want to eat carbs although I was still eating fruits and veggies. I lost weight and I felt good.
Avatar n tn They are pricier than Smart Ones or other brands like that, but the Atkins diet is low carb so these meals VERY little carbs and lots of protein.
Avatar m tn I started in may on Atkins and lost almost 20 pounds a month..then in July I quit loosing weight all month. I changed to calories and added fruits and vegetables plus some complex carbs...lost another 33 pounds.. I have 20 to go and can't decide whether to stay on calories or back to Atkins.. my doc says I have glycemic issues but not diabetes... yet... any advice?
Avatar f tn Eating Healthy diet does not ensure that you will lose weight. Your weight is a balance between the calories you take in and the calories you burn. You will lose weight if you burn off more calories than you take in, and you will gain weight if you eat more calories than you burn off.
Avatar f tn You can increase your walking to one hour. Also walk like you mean it, do not stroll. Most important is to control and manage your diabetes. Then limit your carbohydrate food intake for weight loss. Use Google to search and understand the difference between 'simple carbs and complex carbs'. Go to the Atkins web site for low carb information and recipes. Click on programs to get started. http://atkins.com/Homepage.
Avatar f tn I started Atkins today. I kinda started yesterday--didn't cut out carbs completely but ate a heck of a lot less than I usually do as I was getting a feeling for the diet. Anyway, I woke up this morning with a splitting headache that, while it has gone down in severity, is still very much there. I'm sticking to the vegetables and everything since I know you're supposed to get a small amount of carbs from them.
Avatar f tn All you have to do is eat fewer simple carbs to eat fewer simple carbs. But simple crabs, well, how do you tell when a crab is simple? Ask them riddles?
594189 tn?1386916607 Are you counting ONLY carbs? or are you counting calories and other nutrients also? It's great that you are eating breakfast - too often we tend to skip that meal - even myself at times. Depending on the type of sausage, bacon (and how it was cooked) and cheese, it would appear that there might have been an excess amount of fat for breakfast. If the chicken breast was grilled or broiled, lunch would have been ok, except lacking in a wide range of nutrients.
1054985 tn?1257173275 I have been on atkins for 3 years, diagnosed with MS 6 months ago. Anyone try the diet? I feel great with enough energy to drag myself to the gym on a regular basis. Wondering if anyone has had succsess.
Avatar f tn How do i keep belly fat off? My doctor says just cut out the carbs. Easier said than done. Need help!
Avatar f tn I have it as well and it not as bad as it seems. I just watch my carbs and control it with my diet and it's been going fairly well for me. There are a lot of options out there that you can switch to that help control the hungry and it's actually a healthy way of eating. I was eating a lot of sweets and was afraid I was gonna be miserable but I've found some good alternatives. Check out the Atkins food line in the diet section they have good candy bars that I eat when I need a sweet.
Avatar n tn I gave a comment here and the post shows I commented but I don't see it. Maybe it will show up some day but the website seems to be having a host of problems. Basically, carbs aren't all created equal, and calories are not your best source of tracking weight. Calories are one factor, but how well and how quickly you metabolize your food into sugar for energy is more determinative, as foods that turn quickly into sugar have to be burned off quickly or they store quickly as fat.
1464587 tn?1307491605 but I honestly keep reading almost everywhere that the key is to stay atkins/veggie diet..... that it is most important to stay away from sugar and carbs (anything from any kind of flour) and stay with the veggies, egg whites, and meat.
Avatar f tn s included. Remember that vegetables are carbs, too, which is where Atkins when wrong -- not enough vegetables and their essential nutrients. Also keep in mind that there's no such thing as a Paleo diet, it's just a name -- as long as they've dug up our ancestors they've found chewed grains. But of course they were whole grains, not processed flours, and not all grains are created equal.
Avatar n tn Cardiac disease is common in my family. In general, my risk factors are low. I've just been diagnosed enlarged prostate with a 1.5cm nodule. I'm 52 years old. I've read that lifestyle choices for prostate health are the same as for cardiac disease. But there seems to be two camps: One says low-carb "Atkins" syle is best, the other says low-fat "Ornish" style is best.
Avatar n tn //tinyurl.com/atkins-recipes . Replace sugar with artificial sweeteners such as Splenda or Stevia. Also, avoid starchy foods like potatoes, rice, and any foods made with white flour - white bread, crackers, pasta/noodles - as these turn quickly into sugar after eating. Post back if you have further questions.
Avatar n tn None of this happened to me until I got off of atkins. Then all of a sudden I gained 20 pounds in a month and started having these issues. I started working out a lot recently and Iost weight which has been hard to do because of this stomach issue. It makes you heavier and I can't fit into any of my clothes when this happens and it looks like I'm six months pregnant. Before this problem I was so skinny.
