Avatar f tn I took a test to see how I metabolize medications. I appear to be a rapid metabolizer, which explains many things and why I do not have good pain coverage. The doctor who ran the test will not be the one who deals with how to now treat me. Does anyone have an idea what they do with people who metabolize quickly. My pain levels are too high to do much when the dose wears off and I'm losing this battle to keep stamina, let along have a decent life.

Avatar n tn If you change your diet to one where you metabolize food efficiently and exercise a proper amount you should lose weight barring some physiological problem that might prevent this. For example, white flour bread metabolizes quickly into sugar and if not burned off quickly will store as fat. An equal calorie amount of oily wild fish will metabolize more slowly and therefore give you more time to burn it off.

Some peoples metabolism can be slow and not metabolize the medication as quickly and some can absorb it ir metabolize it quicker than others. There have been some peoplw who start feeling withdrawls before there next dose because they metabolize the medication quickly. Just a thought as I would think in that case it could effect how much medication is in your system at any given time.

The best way to eat is to adopt a permanent diet made up of food you enjoy eating that is balanced appropriately between foods rich in nutrients and antioxidants such as vegetables and foods that provide energy such as complex carbs and foods that help build and maintain muscle tone, meaning protein.
Avatar f tn I'm not sure what "hitting your calories" means. A lot of people post on here following some generalized calculator, but calories aren't the be all and end all of eating. The above post explains this when it says to avoid simple carbs as much as possible -- they may be lower in calories than, say, salmon, but they metabolize quickly into sugar.

Vegetables are carbohydrates, but it wouldn't be healthy do without them. What low carb really means, or should mean, is avoiding simple carbs, such as sugar and white flower. Most fruits as we think of them are high in sugar, though it's not as quick to metabolize into simple sugar as processed cane sugar.
Avatar n tn Calories are one factor, but how well and how quickly you metabolize your food into sugar for energy is more determinative, as foods that turn quickly into sugar have to be burned off quickly or they store quickly as fat. A piece of white bread will do that very fast, but it won't have as many calories as a piece of salmon but you won't get fat eating salmon. As for carbs, simple carbs such as white flour and carbs are the ones to watch out for; complex carbs are fine.

Avatar n tn Losing weight isn't really about calories, though I'm sure you'll get some answers based on that. The speed and efficiency of how you metabolize what you eat is far more important. You shouldn't ignore calories, but an example I often cite is that fatty fish such as salmon is high in calories but nobody's getting fat from it, while white bread is lower in calories but metabolizes into sugar quickly and if not burned quickly can turn into fat.

Works for me. I think you should try to put it out of your mind and if you can eat regular healthy meals. Then in a few days ask youself if the feeling came back...don't ask yourself that question several times a day - the mind can do strange things.

It may be possible that some dietary changes may help type 2 diabetics metabolize their carbohydrates better, but remember that type 1 diabetes has a totally different cause from type 2. What helps a type 2 diabetic, even if true, won't help a type 1, for type 1 diabetes is caused by destruction of pancreas cells whereas type 2 is usually rooted in insulin resistance.

Complex carbohydrates are startchy food like patatoes, rice and pastas. Simple carbohydrates are what you should avoid and those are desserts and candies.

Avatar n tn Moke, It often takes hours for all our food to be digested, but carbohydrates are digested more quickly. Simple sugars are digested even more quickly & some are initially digested in our mouth. Fats & proteins take longer. Depending on what we eat, we could get a blood sugar rise in just a few minutes or -- if it's complex carbohydrates mixed with proteins and fats, the rise will be more gradual and over a long period of time, as you mention.

Restrict & avoid refined sugars, practice and adhere to weight control, do some sort of exercise daily, practice stress management, and get adequate sleep. These are all important in managing this illness, the most important, along with proper nutrition, is physical activity. Walking, not strolling, helps to lower blood sugar levels.
