If you are serious about this I can strongly recommend the book "diabetes solution" by Dr. Richard Bernstein, you can google this. His book explains how to safely use insulin and diet to manage blood sugars and weight.
Avatar m tn Yes, you could have diabetes. Cut down on the simple carbs (those which contain sugar and white flour), as those break down quickly and will spike your blood sugar. Concentrate on complex carbs (fiber), such as those found in vegetables and whole grains, as they take longer to break down and won't cause blood sugar spikes. I agree that if you're overweight, you'll need to lose, but that can be very difficult, if not nearly impossible, so you have to be very diligent.

The insulin stays in your system (depending on what type) for several hours. You may need to test your blood sugar two hours after eating occasionally and if it is high or low, you can talk to your doctor or diabetes educator about adjusting your insulin.

Avatar f tn So I failed the 3 hour glucose test and they said I have gestational diabetes, I have been keeping track of what I eat , highest my blood sugar has been was 170 and that was 1 hour after eating some cereal with honey normal rang it has been running tho is 85 to 100. They say baby is fine and at the right growth rate but they keep freaking me out with this , if baby is fine I'm fine I have always eaten healthy and didn't have this with my first pregnancy.

My experience has been I can exercise all I want but if I don't change my eating habits it doesn't seem to do much. The more important thing is to know if your blood sugars are in the healthy range or not. 80-120 is the norm. You can be as skinny as a rail too and if your blood sugars are out of whack that is still dangerous.

If any one parent has Diabetes care is required with children's diet. Higher protein is good for Diabetics but just as good for everyone especially children.

Only carbohydrates (including grain products, fruits, juice, milk, yogurts, potatoes, corns--starchy foods) will raise the blood sugar level in the body. However, if you didn't fast (have not eaten for 8 hours or more), you must had a random glucose test done. they do have guidelines to tell what number is high. if your glucose level came up to be a bit above normal then you might be considered prediabetic.

Avatar m tn What is wrong is you have diabetes. Diabetes is the bodies in-ability to process carbohydrates properly resulting in high blood sugar (BG). ALL carbohydrates not just sugar. Your body turns all carbohydrates into BG . I dont know what your "diet" is that you follow. BUT it has more carbohydrates than your body can process. Even the ADA's diet has too many carbs for you OR/AND you need drugs to help your body to process the carbs.

Avatar f tn Teast before you eat Idealy your BG is under 100 (probably not if your diabetic). Count the carbohydrates in your meal. Eat. test your BG 1 hour, two hours after you eat. You are looking for BG to always be under 140 (BG over 140 causes damage to your body) or less than a 40 Pt rise in BG. If your BG rises more than 40 Pts you eat too many Carbohydrates. Carbohydrates raise BG ALL carbs raise BG whole wheat, brown rice, pasta, most fruit will raise BG.
Avatar f tn Honestly dont be nervous. Gestational diabetes is pretty common. Just watch the amount of carbohydrates in your meals. Keep them low usually under a total of 60g for breakfast and dinner and under 45g for lunch. Keep snacks to no carbs at all. Cheeses are great. Cut the soda and sugary food back and you should do just fine. Im a type 1 diabetic for 13 years. Talk to your doc about it. Its not that bad when its just the gestational diabetes.

Avatar m tn Vegetables that are non-starchy, such as carrots, lettuce, spinach, squash etc are very good. Keep fruits in the diet but watch for rises in blood sugars. Drink lots of water if other medical issues allow(if your mother has heart issues she may not be able to drink lots of water).I strongly suggest meeting with a diabetes educator or dietician to review your mom's food choices and do some meal planning.
