Avatar f tn Hi there, I am a 31 year old female recently diagnosed with Dissacharidase Deficiency, otherwise known as carbohydrate malabsorption. According to my gastro, a bad viral infection I acquired almost 18 months ago knocked out only my lactase enzymes, but also the enzymes neccessary to break down sugars, most carbs and all starches. I also became seriously sensitive to fructose, the sugar found in fruit.
Avatar n tn I have carbohydrate malabsorption (otherwise known as dissacharidase defficiency). Both are just fancy names for the fact that my body doesn't make enough enzymes to break down and properly absorb carbohydrates. Like ruffmagruff, i developed this out of the blue after having a bad stomach bug. took about 14 months of being pretty miserable before we figured out what what up. It was a total fluke: i wanted to lose about 10 lbs so i tried the south beach diet.
Avatar n tn Have you been tested for fat malabsorption? That condition can also result in a foul-smelling stool.
Business woman1 But one has to rule out the other possibilities like IBS {irritable bowel syndrome, bacterial overgrowth of the small intestine, Crohn’s disease, Ulcerative Colitis, carbohydrate {sugar} malabsorption, hyperthyroidism, Addison’s disease or may be due to laxative abuse. Take adequate amount of fluids and oral rehydration solution to prevent dehydration. Maintain a good hygiene and drink clean preferably boiled water.
Avatar f tn Colitis or IBS can produce the symptoms you describe as can celiac disease. Other conditions such as a lactose deficiency, carbohydrate malabsorption, or fat malabsorption may be considered. These are conditions that your physician may have already considered. Have you been evaluated by a gastroenterologist? Your health care is dependant upon your parents or guardian. I am certain that they too are concerned. Please discuss your distress with them. They are your best advocates.
Avatar m tn Since digestive enzymes were helping you earlier, you definitely have some enzyme deficiency related to carbohydrate metabolism. Diarrhea is the commonest and significant presentation. Treatment is restricting carbohydrate diet. You can consult a nutrition specialist to find which carbohydrates you can take and which you should eliminate. Take care!

However, that would most likely would only be the situation if you have a long standing history since childhood of gi issues. People also can develop an oat allergy as an adult. https://www.healthline.com/health/oat-allergy As to your question if your usage of Doxycycline would result in a long standing post usage side effect, that is unlikely but not impossible.
1396732 tn?1280415399 I have been reading about malabsorption and it kind of fits me. I am a Type II diabetic and my aunt died of pancreatic cancer 3 yrs. ago. Thank you for your help.
Avatar m tn hi. im currently having a case of malabsorption i guess. i can see some food particles in my stool. its been like this for about 3 months now and i lost significant weight maybe 20 lbs. my stool looks like pale yellow and watery. at first i was worried (until now im still worried) about HIV symptoms since i also have swollen lymph nodes, skin rashes and white tongue. i tested negative after 15 weeks of possible exposure so im thinking of other possibilities. i still feel weak.
Avatar f tn Has anyone taken the Fat Malabsorption test, because they had long term diarrhea? I am on my 6th and final day of the test. It is a horrible test! I had to eat 100 grams of fat, 3 days before I began the stool collection, and 100 grams of fat the 3 days of the stool collection. Thank God today is my last day! I am so nauseous! I am never going to want to eat again. It is very hard to fit 100 grams of fat into your daily diet, when you don't have a decent appetite.
Avatar f tn I have been formally diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and possible Carbohydrate Intolerance. My issue is when I eat a load of carbs, it hits up to 3 days later and I can't hardly get out of bed and am weak most of the day. Everything I read about Carb Intolerance says that fatigue usually hits within the first few hours. Has anyone else experienced this? Carb crash, a day or days after the carbs are eaten?
1440398 tn?1371754390 GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease), where the acid contents of the stomach come up into the esophagus, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), malabsorption, inflammatory bowel diseases and various infections of the colon. Blood tests will help detect infections, besides stool examination which will reveal fat malabsorption. It is best to consult a primary care physician and discuss your concerns. Take a light diet and avoid fried fatty foods. Drink plenty of water and liquids.
Avatar f tn With blood sugar this high, you must drink plenty of fluids. Non sweetened. Water and unsweetened tea are ok. Do not take any carbohydrate containing foods until your blood sugars come down. If your numbers don't come down within a few hours you should go to the ER. You will need to see your doctor. maybe you need to start on insulin to help control your blood sugars. A low carbohydrate diet, and low glycaemic index foods may help you in controlling blood sugars.
362249 tn?1441315018 ve known her for 10 years and she has not been shy about talking about this! She is on and off treatment and she swears by a low carb/gluten free/dairy free diet. Here is something I found: Some alternative practitioners use diet to address Candida overgrowth. For example, Dr. Crook recommends people with Candida overgrowth follow certain diet guidelines: * Avoid sugar. According to Dr. Crook, sugar promotes the growth of yeast. The total carbohydrate intake per day is often limited.
Avatar m tn Either you do not eat well or there is increased metabolism as in hyperthyroid states, HIV, cancer etc. Poor absorption as in irritable bowel syndromes and malabsorption syndromes too is possible. Malabsorption syndromes are seen in intestinal tuberculosis, HIV, tropical sprue, parasites in stool and Whipple’s Disease. Diabetes too can be the cause. The best thing would be to consult a general practitioner or PCP and try and assess what is the cause of your problem.
Avatar m tn Have her go on the "Specific Carbohydrate Diet". It was developed by Dr. Sidney V. Haas and popularized by Elaine Gottschall who wrote a book on how to cure Inflammatory Bowel Diseases. The book is called "Breaking the Vicious Cycle: Intestinal Health Through Diet". You can find it on Amazon.com and there you can read all of the MANY wonderful reviews on there. The diet consists of easy to digest whole foods. It's the next best thing to an elemental liquid diet.
Avatar n tn First, you must realize that there is a huge difference in the treatment of type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. For the type 2 diabetic, I also have read (from the Atkins people) that their diet is a good way to lower glucose levels. This is logical for the type 2 diabetic, for eating a fairly low-carbohydrate diet would not require the production of as much insulin by the already stressed pancreas.
Avatar m tn Yes it doesn't sound like pancreatic cancer. I was thinking malabsorption syndrome. But since the fecal fat test was negative it may not be that. It does sound like that though. Have you had your amylase and lipase done too? These are pancreatic enzymes? It might be that one of your digestive enzymes is off instead.
Avatar f tn I've had messy greasy stools for the last 2 to 3 years. I have to rinse a lot of time in shower to get clean because if I keep wiping I get sore . Never new what caused it but I linked it to fat malabsorption where I can't digest the fat from my food properly. But every time I go to doctors they keep saying it's my diet which I disagree a bit ,I don't smoke don't drink and eat pretty healthy fruit and veg .
Avatar f tn Over the past year I have lost a lot of weight and am experiencing many 'IBS-like' symptoms. This includes stomach aches, varying food transit times (often very fast), undigested food in stools, blood in stools and large amounts of mucus in stools. I have since been diagnosed with coeliac disease, pancreatic insufficiency and have been told that I have 'complex malabsorption problems' that the doctors can't seem to put a name on?
Avatar m tn I have been unwel for many years, finally diagnosed with a unexplained malabsorption syndrome, which causes malnutrition, which in turn is causing secondary hyperparathyroidism, pth levels decrease when I take 3000mgs of calcium carbonate, and 3000mgs of vitamin d ,but it does not resolve the malabsorption .
Avatar f tn Stool is not smell bad, and always just sinks , I am not losing weight either, I am consistently the same weight, colour is medium brown and is usually solid, I’ve had a recent clean colonoscopy and an OGD that showed, GERD and a hiatal hernia I have read that the oily sheen is malabsorption. Or is it normal to have a slight sheen on the water? Again I can't see it unless I get down on my knees at the right angle.
