You could also have some kind of carbohydrate intolerance to the sweeteners used in cola drinks. About quinine being present in colas, I am not sure. But yes, quinine if present can cause allergic reactions.You should consult an allergy specialist and get yourself tested for allergies to ingredients of colas so that you can avoid them in other food stuffs too. Hi Thanks for the detailed post. I think you are suffering from adult onset carbohydrate intolerance. Enzymes needed to digest carbohydrates decrease in adulthood due to celiac disease and tropical sprue (which affect absorption in the intestine) or intestinal infections and injuries. This is diagnosed using oral tolerance tests. With proper management this can be taken care of. Sinus symptoms may or may not be related to carbohydrates. It could be due to crabs you mentioned. And, yes, gluten intolerance can irritate both the upper and the lower digestive tract, so, yes, it can irritate GERD. If you get aching elsewhere in the gut, it is likely aggravating the IBS. Yes, your symptoms do sound like IBS. Your rapid weight loss is of concern though. Gluten intolerance could be an issue. I know you like your italian food pizza,pasta, bread, but if you could endure 2 weeks of very low carb diet with no sugars, no grains, then you could switch to a gluten-free diet for 2 weeks, only if you are feeling better. If you are feeling better on the gluten-free diet then it is likely you have a gluten intolerance.
