Common Questions and Answers about Carbohydrate foods blood glucose

carbohydrate

Avatar n tn Foods with a high GI are metabolized into glucose very quickly and tend to spike blood sugars. These are difficult foods for Type 2s to deal with. Often, these foods also taste very sweet and anecdotally, I've heard many folks (diabetic or not) report that if they have a little bit of candy/cake/cookies/sweet veges, then they crave more. All those foods are high GI foods. GI is not the only factor to consider, of course.
446335 tn?1223948356 However, they are generally considered harmful to the body because they are not easily digested and they spike an individual’s blood glucose level. Bad carbohydrate foods include candy, baked goods with refined white flour (found in all sorts of breads), white pastas, and sodas. As far as sugar is concerned, as a diabetic I read all food packaging ingredient labels for the amount of sugar per serving.
Avatar f tn All diabetics are a bit different in what we can eat and still keep our blood glucose in target range. In general most of us find we need to eliminate sugar and greatly reduce carbohydrate intake especially things like white bread, cereal rice and pasta. The best way to know what works for YOU is to try a certain food and test your blood glucose two hours after eating and make sure you stay within target.
Avatar f tn In high glycaemic index foods, the carbohydrates are broken down very quickly, and have bigger impact on blood sugar than lower GI foods. Ie. beans and bagel. Bagel is high GI and will have more impact on blood sugar than beans, which are low GI - even considering they have the same amount of total carbs.
Avatar n tn ● Avoid manufactured canned and packaged foods. Restrict carbohydrate foods. Restrict foods made with white flour. Avoid starchy foods like potatoes and white rice. These food groups will jack up your glucose levels. ● Maintain a healthy normal body weight. If overweight by a ‘few’ pounds/kilos, lose the fat ● Maintain a healthy normal lipid panel ● Perform 30 minutes of physical exercise daily - minimum. Unsure where previous poster rcvd info on no exercise.
Avatar f tn Because all carbohydrates (except for fiber) will convert to blood glucose, adding up the carbs in a meal or snack allows us to determine its effect on blood sugar. Those who take rapid-acting insulin at mealtimes can match the dose to the amount of carbohydrate using an "insulin-to-carb" ratio. Those who do not take mealtime insulin can keep their carb intake within a range designated by their healthcare team in order to manage blood sugar levels optimally.
Avatar n tn 126 mg/dl * to convert mg/dl to UK or Canada mmol/l standards, divide by 18 Weight loss, daily 30-60 minutes exercise, and restrict carbohydrate food intake all will help lower your glucose levels.
232342 tn?1192696720 The main thing that type 2 diabetics need to watch in their diets is the carbohydrate counts for the foods they eat. All foods in the United States have nutritional labels on them, and the carbohydrates in that food are listed in this label with a number. A slice of bread or one serving of rice (about a half cup of cooked rice) both contain about the same amount of carbohydrates, which means that the pancreas has to produce the same amount of insulin in order to metabolize these foods.
Avatar m tn What has often been said is to cut down or reduce your carbohydrate intake in order to reduce/lower your glucose levels. I have written in your previous postings that you need to use Google or Yahoo to search on complex vs simple carbs. Please include a search on the Glycemic Index reference food groups. Educate yourself about the foods available to you, what you put into your body and how these foods will affect your life. All carbohydrates are broken down to glucose to produce the energy.
Avatar f tn Ask for an A1c test which measure blood glucose over the past 2-3 months. Continue testing premeal (prandial) and 2-3 hours after meals (postprandial). This provides a good insight on foods that affect his glucose levels. Limit carb intake and white foods; potatoes, rice, white bread or anything made with white flour. These turn into sugar after eating.
Avatar f tn The degree of restriction varies by person (you have to use your blood glucose meter to detect the impact of different foods so you can learn which foods work for you and which do not), however it can go as low as 20 g a day from some, and up to maybe 130g a day for those who are very mild and more easily managed. Protein and fat foods are eaten as the basis of the diet. carbohydrates will come from full fat dairy, non-starchy and non-sweet vegetables, some nuts, etc.
Avatar n tn Go get a blood test done for glucose (sugar) levels. You may just have hypoglycemia. This is the opposite of Diabetes. It means your sugar levels are two low and can cause the symptoms you described. Diabetics experience the same symptoms only because they inject insulin to lower their sugar levels.
Avatar n tn The vinegar tonic restricts the absorption of high-carbohydrate foods which lessens the blood sugar increase that usually happens after a meal.
Avatar n tn Again, a nutritionist can spell all this out for you so that both you and your mother understand how various foods will effect her glucose levels. I can suggest two sites where you can get carbohydrate information on just about any food out there, fresh, pkged, even fast food and other major restaurant food items. They are: www.nutritiondata.com and www.calorieking.com Also, a great source of information on diabetes management for type 2's is the American Diabetes Assoc.
Avatar f tn The hypoglycemia in this is transient following food and there is a quick increase in blood glucose once you eat. There is a surge of insulin production after meals, hypoglycemia (makes you feel as though you are hungry) and an urge to sleep. Do discuss this with your doctor (preferably an endocrine specialist) and get yourself examined. Take care!
Avatar f tn Along with avoiding sugar and sugary foods you need to limit your carbohydrate and starch intake as these foods quickly turn into sugar after eating. For example, potatoes, white rice, foods made with white flour - breads, crackers, etc. Eat lean meats, fish, poultry and vegetables. Avoid snacking before bedtime. Use Google search on 'good carbs vs bad carbs' and the Glycemic Index to understand proper nutrition.
Avatar f tn Actually, the first time I took the urine test it was done blindly but then after that because my mother is in the hospital for whatever reason I visit her everyday and when I went there today I asked a nurse how to do it and so I did the test again and she told me for my satisfaction that she will take my blood test, so that was done by the nurse. Anyway, I have a pretty healthy diet. I am always on the go, not much into junk food, eat meals on time and try to work out several times a week.
Avatar m tn I am suffering with type II Diabetes from the last 1yr and using metformin 500mg twice a day, glucose levels are fasting 140-150 and post is 200 i need to change any medicine, i am walking daily 8km and doing normal excersize
Avatar f tn ) Meal replacements, such as shakes, bars and ready-to-mix powders that match these guidelines can be helpful for some people. Blood glucose patterns often change with these types of replacements and thus people should monitor their blood glucose. Physical Activity Guidelines: Physical activity is extremely important to a weight loss plan. A minimum of 150 to 175 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity is recommended. Examples of this include walking, biking, swimming and dancing.
Avatar m tn What is known is that fruit consumed by themselves raise blood glucose levels faster than when eaten with other foods. That is why I stress the importance of consuming fruit with other foods. The bottom line is test your glucose prior to and after consuming fruit to see which ones your body can or cannot tolerate. Up to this year fruit [berries & melons] had little affect on my glucose levels. Not anymore.
1925135 tn?1323307656 If you load your diet with proteins and fats, and minimize your carbohydrate intake, you can possibly bring your blood glucose levels back into a near normal range. This is very dependent on how much insulin you're still able to produce. But remember, there's no cure, only control. You can only reverse the symptoms. Once you've been labeled, you've got it for life. Good luck.....
594189 tn?1386916607 When we are exhausted or blue, we have low blood sugar and/or low serotonin, and the body signals the brain that it needs a pick-me-up. This signal causes a sugar craving or carbohydrate craving. Serotonin is our basic feel-good hormone. If serotonin is low, we feel sad or depressed. And hormonal imbalance or weak digestion can lead to low serotonin.
Avatar n tn htm There is an increased risk. Please get the glucose tolerance tests and blood glucose tests done as soon as possible. I hope the symptoms are just side effects and not the diagnosis that none of us want. Good luck.
