Avatar n tn If you don't have anemia, you don't have an iron problem. Vegetarians should have no problem getting sufficient iron, as it's present and best absorbed from a variety of plants. Examples are nettles, raw spinach, raw dandelion greens, beets, parsley, watercress -- you get the picture here, green leafy vegetables and others as well. Now, just being a vegetarian doesn't mean you're eating well.

My issue is when I eat a load of carbs, it hits up to 3 days later and I can't hardly get out of bed and am weak most of the day. Everything I read about Carb Intolerance says that fatigue usually hits within the first few hours. Has anyone else experienced this? Carb crash, a day or days after the carbs are eaten?
Avatar n tn But know that not everyone is equipped to do well as a vegetarian -- most vegetarians do it for ideological reasons and it is harder to get all your nutrients as a vegetarian, particularly methionine and B12, so you do have to learn how to do it well. Food groups don't differ for vegetarians and meat eaters, just the source of protein does.

The rice should be brown rice for maximum protein and nutrition; beans combined with any whole grain will give you a complete protein. Iron is not a problem for vegetarians -- there are many vegetable sources for it, including beets, parsley, dandelion greens, most green leafy veggies except lettuce, nettles, etc.

I managed health food stores for 18 years, and most of us were largely vegetarian, but few of us were entirely so. Supplements are okay, but they're supplements -- not the whole enchilada.

So basically, this is what I got from it- fresh vegtables, fresh fruits, lean meats, most nuts, NO LACTOSE, NO SUGAR (except in fruits and honey), and NO STARCHES. Is this about right? Also, what is the policy on yogurt and coconut milk?

Avatar f tn A lot of that Vegetarian stuff is all hype. I have patients who are vegetarians all the time who are literaly eaten up with cancer and other diseases. As a nurse and in the opinion of most of the nurses I work with, when a vegetarian comes in sick, they are usually the the ones who seem the weakest and seem to have the most problems. I don't know why that is, but it rings true all too often, enough to make me never want to become a vegetarian.

Avatar f tn I went through the same thing, and in researching medications found most to carry a side effect of weight gain. I spoke to my psychiatrist who told me which ones cause weight gain. So, I was switched to one that supposedly didn't have this side effect, and I saw no change. I'm came to the conclusion that I was consuming more calories than I was burning. But you don't want a "diet," you want a way of eating that you can stick with the rest of your life.
