Carbamazepine side effects in children

Common Questions and Answers about Carbamazepine side effects in children

trileptal

4971738 tn?1390565384 It's a first line drug for bipolar, but it can have nasty side effects, which you won't know until you take it. Some side effects go away after a few weeks or months. The thing to be careful about is that it interacts with a lot of things, including birth control pills. It speeds up some of your liver enzymes, which makes most drugs processed by that system less effective (there are some exceptions). Read the patient leaflet very carefully, and use something like drug.
1204528 tn?1588786333 The interactions with carbamazepine are usually suggesting a decrease levels/effects in the drugs taken with carbamazepine (hepatic metabolic induced). Looks like it's not the case with carbamazepine and diclofenac. I checked interactions with carbamazepine + diclofenac epolamine topical/diclofenac ophtalmic/diclofenac potassium/diclofenac sodium/diclofenac topical.
Avatar f tn Im wondering if anyone has been on this and if it works. What sort of side effects it has? I see this would be used in trigeminal neuralgia too, which I think Ive had a couple of attacks already.
Avatar f tn Carbamazepine (Tegretol) was first used to treat trigeminal neuralgia in the 1990s. Because of its success in treating that painful condition (which is very difficult to treat), it was then used to treat all kinds of neuropathic pain. While it may be useful, there are more modern medications that may help if you have a neuropathic pain problem -- for instance, Neurontin (gabapentin) and Lyrica (pregabalin).
5544493 tn?1369608788 If the side effects look scary, go look up the full side effects profile for an OTC drug you use often (like ibuprofen), which will give you an idea of how scary the full side effects profiles sound.
Avatar n tn Combining fluoxetine or paroxetine with phenytoin can also lead to increased phenytoin side effects and reduce blood levels of paroxetine. You really need to discuss the potential drug interactions with your own doctor.
Avatar m tn Thank you so much for your response Dr Hagan! I was reading something about the side effects of Carbamazepine on Drugs.com and it mentioned the more common side effects to be blurry vision, double vision. Is the double vision mentioned the true diplopia where everything is doubled and not the ghosting kind? Again thank you Dr Hagan! I'll be taking a test in a few hours.
Avatar f tn I get severe facial pain on left side, with head, temple, jaw and neck involvement. Also have had numbness in left foot and hand, along with burning pain and odd sensations (foot feels wet and cold when it is dry.) History of twitching. My question is about tegretol, if anyone has any experience with it. I take 400 mg/day for the face/head pain. It is helping, as the pain is not the severe, drop me to my knees kind of pain.
1298230 tn?1286310079 She prescribed Tegretol 200mg to start. I was supposed to start last night however I am a little scared of what kind of side effects I will experience from this medication. I left a message for my doctor to call me back as I would like to see if I could cut the pill in half to take only 100mg to start. I would appreciate if you or someone can share their experience taking this medication.
Avatar f tn She has gained a bit of weight but is not experiencing any other side effects. However, since starting the drug she has struggled with her swim performance. As she is also starting puberty, I am unsure if the weight gain and her swim performance is related to this or as a result of the medication. As epilepsy is also new to us we are unsure if the condition itself once treated effects sports performance. Has anyone got experience of taking this drug whilst taking part in competitive sport.
Avatar f tn Lamotrigine increases the plasma level of carbamazepine and its metabolites. Carbamazepine lowers the concentration of lamotrigine in the blood. Valproate doubles the plasma level of lamotrigine, and the level of valproate is decreased by about 25% in people taking lamotrigine. Phenobarbital and primidone lower the plasma level of lamotrigine by about 40%. Oral contraceptives can lower the plasma level of lamotrigine by as much as 50%.
Avatar f tn m wondering if my doctor could prescribe something to help with my overactive bladder so I could keep taking the Lexapro or if I should just take something else instead. Lexapro is good in ways because it produces fewer side effects than any other SSRI med that I've tried and I've tried many of them. What do you think?
Avatar f tn And does Paxil interact with Diazepam and does paxil interact with carbamazepine? Does carbamazepine interact with diazepam and vice versa? Please help! Write me back! I am a single mom of two small children who is scared that something will happen to me.
Avatar n tn Some people are slow and some are fast metabolizers, usually slow metabolizers end up with accumulation of drug in blood and hence side effects. Although allergic manifestations are not associated with metabolism.
Avatar n tn Celexa is a more preferred drug for OCD at a low dose for children. This drug seems to work the best with the fewest side effects. If you don't mind what type of OCD subject is it?
Avatar f tn It started with absence seizure and at the age of 17 he started having convulsions. He has been on carbamazepine 1600 mg per day for 8 years aND had seuzures at an average of twice per year. Last year after marriage the frequency increased. Thrice in 3 months. We went to a different doc. He said that he had primary generalized seizure or a right right frontal focus with hemispheric bisynchrony. He also said that carbamazepine is not right medication for it so slowly changed it to kepra.
1080243 tn?1262975363 Often, though you may need to work through several to find just the right fit between releif and side effects. If any of you are being treated for chronic nerve pain please, please read the two Health Pages on this topic. "Pain - a Primer" and "General Principles of Treating Neuropathic Pain" both written by a pain management doctor that visited here. http://www.medhelp.org/health_pages/Multiple-Sclerosis/Nerve-Neuropathic-Pain---A-Primer/show/371?
Avatar n tn in both cases the treatment in Phenytoin and no known to me (till now a treatment to over count its side effects from gingival hypertrophy to the respiratory problems). As you are well fixed on this drug, no need to investigate for surgery neither to switch to Valproate or to Carbamazepine (in some cases patients can mix them to decrease the use of the Phenytoin and its side effects).
608526 tn?1300956781 Yes it was Carbamazepine (Tegretol) he he he. It's been a long time since I've taken them. I'm only taking the gabapentin now because of side effects. But these are making me so loopy that I don't know what to do. I do still suffer with stabbing pains, some numbness etc. on the 300mg per day because I'm not taking enough, but then I can't drive because of the loopiness! LOL Tegretol was bad for me.
Avatar n tn I prefer to not get on the chemical merry-go-round if at all possible, which require more medications and so forth and go the naturopathic route as that has no side effects, so is there a natural regimen I can take for the problem?
Avatar m tn m not sure if Zofran is used in children but you could ask. Tetrabenzene is used but that has some serious side effects so that might not be for children either. But there are other medications as well. Clonidine in patch form (Catapres) is especially helpful for tic like motions (tardive tourreticism which is a variant of tardive dyskinesia I have as well). I am on Tenex which is helpful as well. I believe both of those are used in children.
454366 tn?1211245301 Litium did give me a hyperactive thyroid condition. The med I was given for that has a side effect of osteoporosis in the lumbar in long term use (Synthroid). I ended up with litium toxicity a few years back because diuretics will cause that. As you know caffine is a diuretic (soft drinks) - which most kiddo's I know tend to drink. I would not allow litium to be given to my child; not going through what I have with it. I have a son who is ADHD.
Avatar f tn I have done some research on these two medications mainly on there side effects. A decision will be made on this once I have been to have an EEG.
