I get severe facial pain on left side, with head, temple, jaw and neck involvement. Also have had numbness in left foot and hand, along with burning pain and odd sensations (foot feels wet and cold when it is dry.) History of twitching. My question is about tegretol, if anyone has any experience with it. I take 400 mg/day for the face/head pain. It is helping, as the pain is not the severe, drop me to my knees kind of pain.

She prescribed Tegretol 200mg to start. I was supposed to start last night however I am a little scared of what kind of side effects I will experience from this medication. Lamotrigine increases the plasma level of carbamazepine and its metabolites. Carbamazepine lowers the concentration of lamotrigine in the blood. It started with absence seizure and at the age of 17 he started having convulsions. He has been on carbamazepine 1600 mg per day for 8 years aND had seuzures at an average of twice per year. Last year after marriage the frequency increased. Thrice in 3 months. We went to a different doc. He said that he had primary generalized seizure or a right right frontal focus with hemispheric bisynchrony. in both cases the treatment in Phenytoin and no known to me (till now a treatment to over count its side effects from gingival hypertrophy to the respiratory problems). As you are well fixed on this drug, no need to investigate for surgery neither to switch to Valproate or to Carbamazepine (in some cases patients can mix them to decrease the use of the Phenytoin and its side effects).

Yes it was Carbamazepine (Tegretol) he he he. It's been a long time since I've taken them. I'm only taking the gabapentin now because of side effects. But these are making me so loopy that I don't know what to do. I do still suffer with stabbing pains, some numbness etc. on the 300mg per day because I'm not taking enough, but then I can't drive because of the loopiness! LOL Tegretol was bad for me.

I prefer to not get on the chemical merry-go-round if at all possible, which require more medications and so forth and go the naturopathic route as that has no side effects, so is there a natural regimen I can take for the problem?

m not sure if Zofran is used in children but you could ask. Tetrabenzene is used but that has some serious side effects so that might not be for children either. But there are other medications as well. Clonidine in patch form (Catapres) is especially helpful for tic like motions (tardive tourreticism which is a variant of tardive dyskinesia I have as well). I am on Tenex which is helpful as well. I believe both of those are used in children.

Litium did give me a hyperactive thyroid condition. The med I was given for that has a side effect of osteoporosis in the lumbar in long term use (Synthroid). I ended up with litium toxicity a few years back because diuretics will cause that. As you know caffine is a diuretic (soft drinks) - which most kiddo's I know tend to drink. I would not allow litium to be given to my child; not going through what I have with it. I have a son who is ADHD.

I have done some research on these two medications mainly on there side effects. A decision will be made on this once I have been to have an EEG.
