Common Questions and Answers about Carb count net carbs

carb

Avatar n tn Hi Lurius, Net carbs are getting lots of attention these days because of all the Atkins dieters, but it's actually long been an important concept for diabetics who do carbohydrate "counting" and then try to match our insulin to the amount of carbos we're eating. Foods that have carbos typically have a combination of carbos that we can metabolize (and therefore will affect our BG) and those that we can't (fiber). We subtract fiber from total carbs to get net carbs.
Avatar n tn -) Rice in soups or casseroles-high carb. Pasta-high carb. Potatoes-high carb. Bread-high carb. Regular soda pop and fruit juices-high carb. Sugar is interesting-you can have your sugar and eat it too. If your dr tells you to eat less sugar you need to fire right back at him and say, don't you mean carbs? Do you know of anyone who sits and eats a cup of sugar? No. But I bet we have all eaten a cup of potatoes rice or pasta or bread....
193609 tn?1292180293 Well I think a low carb diet is anywhere from 25-50 carbs a day. I think depending on your weight now and height and with your activity level you have to check out what amount you need to start losing weight.
Avatar f tn Eating Healthy diet does not ensure that you will lose weight. Your weight is a balance between the calories you take in and the calories you burn. You will lose weight if you burn off more calories than you take in, and you will gain weight if you eat more calories than you burn off.
Avatar n tn I eat under 50gr of carbs a day. Reasonable or not depends on who you ask. We do know carbs are what your body turns to Blood Glucose (BG). Dont confuse the carb with the stuff its mixed with, vitamins, minerals. All those are available in other foods without the carbs.
Avatar m tn You need to be sure you are using the right Insulin Carb ratio for your doses before meals and that you have an accurate carb count. Calorieking.com is a good resource for carb listings in addition to what's on packages (and be sure to correctly measure servings). In order to gain weight you want to increase your protein and fats so that you can gain weight without increasing carbs.
362249 tn?1441315018 Really? i thought when u did the carbs you had add the sugars as well! and i thought it was 2 seperate things that some peeps watch the carbs and some watch the sugars thats why i was lost! i wanted to try to cut bk on sugars since i want the belly fat gone but if all you need to watch is carbs thats great!!
Avatar n tn Carbs raise BG so restricting carbs will help BG. when you say 6 units I assume you mean 6 exchanges which is 90 gr of carbs. If you take 250 mg at each meal that is 750 mg a day, the limit is 2400mg a day so you have room to go up on the Met. It can take 6 to 8 weeks for met to become fully effective.
1401296 tn?1280799533 Low carb does not have to mean no carb. You end up just eating the good carbs and in smaller amounts than most people. You don't have to eat bacon and pork rinds and it doesn't have to be unhealthy if you do it right. Most people don't do it right. They don't eat any carbs and then pig out on high fat protein. You can't go on and off as you please. Your body works differently on it and has a hard time switching back and forth.
Avatar n tn for breakfast you can have 2 to 3 net carbs, lunch 3 to 4 net carbs, and for dinner 4 to 5 net carbs. Of course i ususally only have 3 to 4 for lunch and 3 to 4 for dinner. They have put me on a 1800 calorie diet, but i ususally only eat around 1200, but only because im just not that hungry. Also you are supposed to eat about every 4 hours. so for snack you can have 1 to 2 net carbs. a good snack is carrots and lt. ranch or pretzel sticks w' 1 tblspoon of peanut butter.
Avatar f tn You may need insulin. Some people cannot control gestational diabetes with diet, even with their very best efforts. Yes, you can just keep cutting carbs . No grains. just non-starchy vegetables and plenty of healthy fats and protein. If you are doing your very best, then you need to discuss starting insulin. It makes things so much more manageable.
Avatar n tn My Dr put me on a 60 carb breakfast and 70 carbs for lunch and dinner. I'm also very active.
Avatar n tn I wish I understood more about insulin. At this point, I am on oral medicine only. Initially, I didn't even pay that close attention to the carbs I was eating and managed to keep my BG levels somewhat in control. As I've aged, that has changed. What I've learned to do is only eat things that I know what the carb count is. Something that has helped both myself and my wife (who is insulin dependent) is "intermittent fasting".
Avatar n tn t say how old he is) have sufficient understanding of how to figure dosages? Do you know how to count carbs, and do you have an insulin/carb ratio? Have you told your endo that hs numbers remain high? I'm sorry that is a lot of questions, but rather than focus on breakthroughs that might happen down the road...and let's all hope they do!...you might want to focus on his right here and now treatment.
Avatar f tn I agree with super. I have a type 1 diabetic daughter she is 7 yrs old and we count carbs. She gets so many units of insulin for how many carbs she eats plus so many units for how much her numbers are above what the doc wants. That doc sounded like a real jerk. My grandma is a type 2 diabetic as well and has many problems with high numbers and we just found out that she is in begining stages of kidney failure. So its deffinantly important not to give up.
Tbd Many chose a new way of eating (WOE), LCHF (Low Carb High Fat). as diabetics it is carbs that raise BG, eating low carb works well for controlling BG. The "eat low fat" mantra is based on BAD science. even the US CDC says cholesterol in the diet is not a concern. Also when carbs are removed from the diet then some other form of energy is needed... fat. I eat under 50 gr of carbs a day and have been since 2000.
Avatar f tn Then you need to know your carb/insulin ratio. count the carbs and take the proper amount of insulin. and test your BG after 2 hours and 4 hours to see if your BG is in range. if its too high you need to check on your carb/insulin ratio to see if it needs adjusting.
Avatar f tn Its a chance you can get it i know it may scare you to get it I have it with this baby but not with my first three but I'm high risk even not being pregnant it runs on both side of both sides of my family but eating right and watching your carb in take you should be just fine good luck
Avatar m tn She said to limit my carb intake to 180g per day. So instead of counting calories I count carbs (I also keep track of calories though). I worked out 3 of my 6 days for p90x and still lost 6lbs last week by doing this. So excited because I did p90x for 30days without skipping any days and I was staying in my calorie range, and I only lost 2lbs and I gained a body fat percentage. I was not watching my carbs. Now that I am, I have felt better and am finally dropping pounds. Hope this helps!
Avatar n tn My mom is just plain diabetic (not pregnant). But she says it helps to eat a serving of protein when you eat a serving of carbs because it helps stabilize your blood sugar and keeps it from going up and down. I think it's something about the way your body metabolizes stuff. Also, there are mixed studies out on this right now, but I don't think it would hurt to try- adding cinnamon to stuff like oatmeal, applesauce, etc.
1290943 tn?1272093764 My daughter was diagnosed earlier this week and we are struggling with the carb counting still. She has her first endo appt on Monday but I feel like her numbers are all over the place. I felt a lot better about my 'abilities' to count carbs after reading about this Dawn Phenomenon.... anything else I should know? My biggest question is what to feed her in the morning. She SPIKES if she eats cereals (which she prefers) and I'm not crazy about all the sugar anyway.
Avatar f tn I think there are two types of Weight Watchers plans you can do, the plan where you count points and the one where it is a lower carb diet. Anyways, I gained weight on weight watchers before, when there wasn't the lower carb choice. I am now doign South Beach and have had success this week.
