Avatar n tn My 49 year old SIL has ovarian cancer. She had early stage breast cancer last year, tested + for BRCA 2 and they found the ovarian cancer during a routine PET scan. She's had a full hysterectomy and has just started 2 types of chemo. I know that one is through a port in her chest and the other will be through her stomach and she'll be hospitalized for that one. Her CA-125 was 3748 at the time of surgery.
Avatar f tn The second week of July 2008, Mom had her left lower lobe removed and a sliver of the upper lobe. The doctor said he was staging her lung cancer a T2 because of the tumor's size (over 3 cm) and the tumor's behavior (it transversed the pleura). But, the tumor hadn't reached the chest wall. Based on the pathology report, it is belived there was no lymphnode involvement nor any metastisis to any other organ. What does "transversed the pleura" mean?
255017 tn?1206907775 I was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma as well, and while they were doing the pre-op tests and doing the breast MRI they found something on my other breast that also wound up being invasive ductal carcinoma, so I have cancer in both breasts at the same time. My question is is how do you know what stage you are in? I go the 19th for surgery, lumpectomies and lymph node biopsies, so they will know if it has spread any further. Thank you for any help, Take care ladies, Trish P.S.
Avatar n tn If she has cancer come back from the ovary then it is still metastatic ovarian cancer. No one knows how long someone will live with recurrent ovarian cancer. The cancer can grow very slow or very fast. Get the pathology reports and read them. What I have read is that grade 3 or undifferentiated cancers are more aggressive and generally grow faster. I also read that Serous cell type is more favorable for treating a recurrence.
Avatar n tn My sister has since gone back to her dr. and now the cancer is back. Only this time it is on her bowel. The dr. said they cannot operate and suggested chemo every wk. for a 21 cycle which is chemo for 3 Fridays and then the last Friday, no chemo. He also indicated she had 2-3 years to live. What does a dr. see to provide such information to a patient. If it is true, I would want to know however drs. have been wrong with such diagnosis on survival rates in the past. Why do they continue to do it?
Avatar n tn If they biopsied the fluid and it came back ovarian cancer she will need surgery and staging. THis MUST be done by a gyn/onc. They have more training and more experience debulking cancer. If all she has is the one tumor on the ovary, chances of catching it early are great. Come back and let us know when you get more info. Myself and all the regulars here will be here to support you both all the way.

Avatar f tn //www.cancer.org/cancer/bladder-cancer/detection-diagnosis-staging/staging.html On a side note, PET/CT is rarely used to stage bladder cancer. On a PET/CT, the urinary system including bladder normally appears black (metabolic uptake), obscuring everything within it, making it difficult to detect underlying pathology. PET/CT is used more for staging/restaging lymphoma, breast cancer, etc.
Avatar n tn I had an ovarian fibroma and did not have staging at the time of surgery but later when it was questionable if it was cancer or not my doctor wish that they had. I hope that your surgery is being done by a gyneological oncologist. As far a worry...... try to keep your mind busy and research as much a possible so that you know what your doctor is talking about when he talks to you.
Avatar f tn pregnant so that i came back to see my internal med doc who requested for a whole stomach u/s and all results are normal, however he conducted parentesitis and had a 50 ml fluid removed from my abdomen, the result was "malignant ascites and ovarian malignancy suspected" and i was referred to another ob-gyne who ordered ca-125 that have a reading of 2,580 i have been told by my doc that i have ovarian cancer, she will refer me to a oncologist this coming january 3, 2012 yet, i can alr
Avatar n tn Thyroid tissue in a lymph node, usually means spread of thyroid cancer to that lymph node. If this is hurthle cell cancer, it is usually more aggressive than papillary, but the staging system is the same. It depends on age, cancer size, which lymph nodes were involved and spread outside the neck. Would discuss this with your endocrinologist to learn the details/staging and treatment plan for your case. Usually I-131 (radioactive iodine) is used.
523728 tn?1264621521 I have completed 3 chemo treatments (Carbo/Taxol) and am scheduled for a CT scan next week. On the order, it gives the reason "ovarian cancer re-staging." I was under the impression that once you're staged, that's it. Am I wrong?
Avatar m tn //www.cancer.org/cancer/melanoma-skin-cancer/detection-diagnosis-staging/melanoma-skin-cancer-stages.html This link goes through staging. However, to be stage 4, distant lymph nodes and/or organs such as liver, lungs or brain are affected. Please let us know how things are going.
Avatar n tn How are you doing? What type of treatment are your receiving now? The staging of your cancer was given two years ago?
1193817 tn?1264935040 Hi I was 32 when diagnosed with serous borderline ovarian cancer in 2002. This type of tumor looks like cancer but doesn't act like cancer. Because borderline pathology is tricky my doctor recommended a second opinion on the pathology just to make sure. At the time I had my diagnosis they recommended a total hysterectomy as well. Which I had a year and half later. Nowadays, once the diagnosis is confirmed to be borderline, they tend to not recommend hysterectomies anymore.
Avatar n tn Hi. The American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging system for breast cancer classifies disease using three criteria: T refers to a description and size of the primary tumor, N refers to the presence or absence of metastases or cancer spread to nearby lymph nodes, and M indicates the presence or absence of metastases to distant body organs like the bones, lungs or liver. A prefix "P" when combined with T, N, or M indicates the "pathologic staging".
Avatar f tn Hi, There is a clinical staging and a pathologic staging. The clinical staging would look at the results of scans as well as the findings on physical examination, in order to decide whether particular suspicious areas may already have disease. Pathologic staging would involve the pathologist reading though all areas that were sampled or removed. This would be definitive. Biopsies are not without risks.
Avatar m tn my mother, 51, used to be a very healthy woman only suffering a little about hypertension, got ovarian epithelial cancer staging IC. She got the surgury and then chemo after 7 days with Carboplatin/Docetaxel (400mg/100mg per three weeks). Her CA125 before surgury was 199.3 and after first chemo it decreased only to 168.8. The white cell count decreased after first chemo to 4.1 and returned to 9.8 before the second chemo. Now she is having the second Chemo with same medicine.
Avatar f tn Information about whether or not cancer is found in the lymphnodes under the arm gives us information about spread of the cancer and is part of the staging of the cancer. Finding cancer in another part of the body – such as the hips, pelvis and spine also gives us information about staging of the cancer. Decisions about her treatment will be based on this information. Breast cancer that has metastasized (spread) to the bone would be called stage 4.
Avatar m tn html This article that you can copy and past goes through staging of bladder cancer. The first thing they look at is how far the cancer goes, if the primary tumor in the bladder has gone through the wall and is affecting nearby tissue. Do you know what stage they have determined for you? It is true that if the cancer has pushed outside of the bladder, they do remove the bladder as part of treatment as well as chemotherapy is given. That is pretty scary to hear, I'm sure.
Avatar f tn Were imaging tests (such as MRI, CT scan) done to see if it has spread? Have you seen these reports? There are two systems of staging endometrial cancer. One system has a T0 stage (the other does not) which is considered a pre-cancerous condition which may be curable with medication such as Megestrol. Unfortunately, hysterectomy is grossly overused with only 2% done for a cancer diagnosis.
1299624 tn?1332803936 The doctor was also going to remove my left ovary because of a cyst found on the ovary. The doctor discovered I had cancer (papillary serous borderline) in both ovaries. No oncologist was available during surgery, so she removed the uterus, fallopian tubes, both ovaries and cervix. Note: when the doctor grasped the ovaries, a yellowish fluid leaked out of them while they were still in my abdomen. I am concerned that there were cancer cells in the fluid.
1299624 tn?1332803936 The ovaries did not look right, so my doctor took them out and discovered they both have papillary serous borderline cancer. The problem is, the doctor ruptured both ovaries. I did develop an infection after my surgery, so my staging surgery has been put off till May 17th. I am very worried that cancer was spilt into my abdomen. Does anyone have any information on what the prognosis may be when the doctor does the staging surgery? Thanks for any help you can give me.
Avatar f tn The pathology report returned with the endometrial ovarian cancer 1.1, graded 1c. No mets noticed. Surgeon sugested the total hysterectomy with uterus, left ovary and tube, lymphnodes and abdominal fat removal. Very emotional. can somebody gime me advise what to do?
Avatar n tn t had them, she needs to see a gynecologic oncologist and get a full staging/second opinion on treatment. I hope her staging is early and she is on the road to recovery. Best wishes.
Avatar n tn Some doctors order a bone scan as routine part of the staging work-up for breast cancer, while other oncologists prefer to have the bone scan done only if the patient manifests with symptoms (e.g. hip and back pains) which would make one suspect the presence of bone metastases. You can ask your friend's doctor the reasons why he has ordered a scan. I'm sure he'll be more than willing to explain things to you.
