Can you mix lantus and regular insulin

Common Questions and Answers about Can you mix lantus and regular insulin

lantus

Avatar m tn Do not dilute Lantus and do not mix Lantus with any other type of insulin. And, do not switch to another brand or type of insulin or change the dose or dosage time of any type of insulin you are using without first talking to your doctor.
Avatar n tn NEVER mix Lantus with any other insulin. you can take them at the same time in different injection sites but do not mix them. Says so rite on the Lantus warning label.
Avatar n tn if you need to take units of novalog but doctor want you to take lantus too is that ok to take both at same time
Avatar n tn htm To me, the basic difference is variability and flexibility. With Lantus, you know exactly what you are dosing, and you also dose exactly the amount of fast acting you need. With 70/30 there is a lot extra to take into account. I personally don't know many, if any, people who are still using mixed insulin, except in poorer countries where they can't get anything else.
Avatar n tn I use a short-acting insulin, Novolog, and a 24-period insulin, Lantis. I give Novolog with each meal, and Lantus when I go to bed. I am having troubles with my sugars in the morning. I wake up at 7am, and eat breakfast. I give my shot immediately after eating breakfast, around 7:20. I test my sugar before I eat breakfast and it is normally good. Then at 8am, I head to school. When I arrive at school around 9am, I test my sugar, which is usually pretty high (200-300).
Avatar f tn What I do know is that novolin (Regular) is a very outdated mode of insulin. The Lantus you were on was a newer basal (long-acting) insulin, but wouldn't work as well unless it was combined with a bolus (fast-acting) insulin before meals. That is the standard of care. I would see an endocrinologist and get on appropriate insulin regimen because 150-300 is much too high to sustain blood sugars.
Avatar n tn I think if you remember portion size and drink plenty of water AND exercise on a regular basis, you will lose the weight you have gained. As for starting your Lantus in the morning I would check with your endocronologist. Lantus is a 24 hour insulin, so I am not sure what effects taking it in the morning opposed to taking it at night would be, but of course ask.
Avatar m tn Hi, yes, it can be normal for someone with type 2 to take both long acting (Lantus) and short acting (Humalog) insulin. The important thing is to control blood sugar.
Avatar n tn If you do change back, you may want to err on the side of keeping those night time snacks until you have a better sense of how and when the insulin works for you. I trust you are seeing an Endocrinologist who has had lots of experience with diabetics on insulin. It's important that your doctor specifically have experience using Lantus since adjusting every insulin is a little different.
Avatar n tn and it is to do with how the insulin is absorbed. If you continue to have problems you may ask your dr if you can be changed to an alternative long acting insulin such as Levemir (dosed twice a day) or Tresiba (dosed once a day).
Avatar n tn Because excess heat can activate Lantus post injection, patients are being warned against things such as saunas and hot tubs due to the possibility of severe hypoglycemia. But I've also seen 'hot showers' included as well. I've been wondering - how hot is 'hot'? In the winter I'm always freezing, and a hot shower was great before bed. I've been hesitant to enjoy such a pleasure since starting Lantus though.
Avatar n tn I am a 28 year old female diabetic who was diagnosed when I was 9. I used to be on a regimen where I used both Regular, NPH, and Humalog to balance my blood sugars but it required a lot of effort and a lot of test strips which are so expensive, even with insurance! In January 2005, my endocrinologist started me on Lantus to try to find some balance with my sugars. My a1c readings have been under 6.
Avatar n tn Yes this happens a lot, when switching to lantus or the pump. Lantus is a long acting insulin that has no peak it gives you a steady basal rate similar to the insulin pump. I realize that it is hard to trust the the insulin enought to not have a snack, but it does work, and it is hard to resist the urge to react to the number.
Avatar f tn is not an endocrinologist you need one and if he/she is and is unwilling to consider other insulins then you need a new Dr.
Avatar n tn thank you,i donot think she can, also will the lantus do more as it is increased and how far should the increase should it be done in 2u or can it go up 5u with no problems if i watch the blood sugars?
Avatar f tn t have enough food inside to go along with the amount of insulin you take. It can also mean you have overdone yourself in exercising in some form. This one means you have burned up all that you ate and is the reason to carry a snack or two with you. Always carry some small snack when exercising. It could be a handful of nuts, yogurt, a couple peanut butter crackers. When one's sugars get toooo low, we are not responsible for what happens because we do not know what is happening.
Avatar n tn Hi Bill! I'm a volunteer, not a medical professional, so please check & verify all information received here with your endocrinologist before taking any action. I am the parent of an 18 year old who was diagnosed at the age of 21 months and we've done shots (N&R, Lantus&Humalog), inhaled insulin (did a 2 year study), and currently she's on an insulin pump (& loving it!). My daughter's endo had her on a sliding scale dosage, dependent on her bg reading.
Avatar n tn In the meantime, a very long acting insulin with regular insulin at meals and some blood testing to keep you on track can give you excellent control and a pretty flexible lifestyle. For me, those were the keys to living a long healthy and happy life with diabetes. I'd love to hear more about what insulin you are on and how long you have had diabetes and any other concerns you might have.
Avatar f tn You did not mention how old the bottle of Lantus is that you are using. Lantus comes with instructions saying to not use any "open" bottle longer than one month. My twin and I, both type 1 diabetics and both on Lantus, do notice unpredictable things happening when a bottle is older than one month, or occasionally when a bottle seems to go "bad a little bit before the one month deadline.
1353681 tn?1387083733 I inject just before going to bed (22 units), and when I wake up in the morning (8 units). As you can see, I don't use the same dose morning and evening, as I find I need more basal insulin at night when I am inactive, than during the day when I am active. You will need to adjust your dosage based on your target blood sugar levels. Another new basal insulin is tresiba. This is a long acting basal insulin and is only injected once a day.
Avatar f tn Your husband needs to be on insulin. Often LANTUS is enough to do the job. The CDL medicals are a standing joke, as are the FAA medicals. Years ago I required a First Class FAA medical for jets and I got mine on pass from a hospital where I was released from the intensive care unit AMA (against medical advice) long enough to make the appointment, before I collapsed. I "passed". All that being said, diabetes and truck driving don't mix well.
Avatar n tn A good endocrinologist can help you sleep much better! You (AND your daughter) need you to be well rested! When you talk to your daughter's doctor, ask also about using Lantus insulin -- it is a long-acting insulin without a "peak." For many diabetics, Lantus once or twice a day works well with a rapid or short acting insulin to cover meals.
Avatar f tn s kind of a lot, I have to suggest you talk to your diabetic nurse to review your protocol. You can use both Novalog and Lantus, but not in the same syringe and not at the same injection site. Lantus is usually administered at night to bring your glucose levels down to normal in the morning.
Avatar n tn Not only have I gained 30 pounds, I started having mood swings and irritability since starting Lantus and lately now in the past month I had two severe lows right after taking the Lantus (within 30 minutes of taking my shot). Each time I did draw blood as I removed the needle but the doctor and diabetic educator insist that I cannot hit a vein and even if I went into a vessel it would not cause the insulin to react so quickly.
