Common Questions and Answers about Can you have hypoglycemia without diabetes

hypoglycemia

1055725 tn?1265869375 Hypoglycemia is one of the symptoms of diabetes and just means low blood sugar. Some people however, have a diagnosis of just hypoglycemia, without the diabetes. That is very different. Your symptoms might relate to either one, or they might not. Some other symptoms of diabetes are increased hunger and thirst. Some people however are diabetic without experiencing any symptoms at all. The bottom line is that it is easy to get your blood sugars checked to see if there is something going on.
885280 tn?1289562555 Hypoglycemia can lead to diabetes if not watched. I was told by my doctor that we are going to have to watch me for diabetes as I am hypoglycemic. Because there is a history of diabetes in my family.
Avatar n tn Thanks very much for the feedback, JDRF- I'm just been nervous because I can't seem to shake this cloudy feeling in my head. Combine that with an extremely low score on an insulin test, nausea when eating sugar, and noticing tonight for the first time symptoms of hunger and thirst (after reading these symptoms today), I've pretty much convinced myself that my pancreas has stopped producing insulin and I have type1 diabetes. Did I mention that I am a hypochondriac?
Avatar n tn This type of hypoglycemia does not lead to diabetes.
20853006 tn?1547666489 First, let me say that mild low blood sugar from time to time happens, but you should also make sure to have blood work from your doctor to make sure you do NOT have diabetes. That's essential. And keep a little log of when it happens and what you did or did not eat prior so you have a history. First, small but frequent meals. Don't skip a meal and add in regular snack time. That's important to do.
Avatar n tn The symptoms are vary varied and might include dizziness, feeling generally out of it, fatigue, irritability, disorientation, tingling. Testing is the key as if your numbers have been high for awhile you will feel low even if you're not. You should treat any lows below 60 (some treat below 70) with a couple glucose tablets. You will learn the correct number for you.
Avatar n tn s blood sugar to raise after eating. However, I believe that hypoglycemia can be a precurser to diabetes. Since you said that it runs in your family, I would try to keep a healthy weight, eat a low-carb diet, exercise and have regular check-ups. If your blood sugar was high while fasting, then you might be concerned, but not a couple hours after eating.
Avatar n tn Yes, hypoglycemia can be an early warning sign of diabetes, or you might have something else going on. Talk to your doctor. Tell him what you are experiencing. Then make sure you get an A1C test, not just a fasting blood sugar test. The A1C tests all your glucose for the last couple months, not just one moment.
6918915 tn?1395932871 It could be gestional diabetes. I'm hypoglycemic and I have gestional diabetes. Normally, when I feel like that is because my blood pressure is high.
Avatar m tn Some people experience hypoglycemia for many years off and on before a diagnosis of diabetes. You may also have had diabetes for quite awhile and dismissed it as just hypoglycemia. If you have developed neuropathy that is probably the case. All you can do now is treat the neuropathy and control your blood sugar with a combination of weight loss, exercise, lowering carb intake and oral meds or insulin as prescribed by your doctor.
Avatar n tn I think they should. You might want to post this same question on the diabetes comminity forum. Best wishes.
Avatar n tn There are many reasons that the body releases extra levels of insulin into your body and you may look at some of them to see if you can find the trigger for you. These can include stress as well as adrenaline and other things. You might be able to get some predictions as to occurances but it is still not an exact science.
Avatar n tn hypoglycemia seems to be thought of as not serious, but in fact its just as serious as diabetes, and also can progress like diabetes. you may have been told this 5 years ago but it may have progressed to a higher level. it could be worse. you need to have your doctor check your blood sugar levels. and if its not the hypoglycemia then you need to find out what it is.
Avatar n tn Wow, I think a fast track to the endo would be ideal. Could your primary help with that. Hypoclgycemia can become a medical emergency. I believe, being diabetic would be a higher number, not lower. Clearly there is an issue with blood sugar regulation . People with diabetes can have hypoglycemia but I'm not sure there is any indication of that with you. I think you need to be seen as soon as possible to unravel this. https://www.mayoclinic.
Avatar n tn i no longer drink unless my wife and i go to a restaurant and then i only have 1 or 2 beers and do this only once or twice a month. i find i can keep better care of my diabetes without alcohol.
Avatar f tn I, also have GAD, and have experienced hypoglycemia, particularly in summer, when my appetite is low due to heat. I have found myself running in to stores to wolf a candy bar so I wouldn't pass out, and pay for it while people looked at me like I was nuts. In my case, I don't think it's related to my GAD, but I do think that I am more likely to to have it happen during a panic attack. Definitely see your doctor about this. And a question: you said you ate puppy chow. Why?
Avatar f tn ) and maybe the doc can suggest a local diabetes educator... he does not *have* to change his diet or lifestyle, but a diabetes educator could at least help him figure out how best to use insulin... Please give us an update and let us know how he's doing!
Avatar f tn I would see your doctor about this very soon, as folks with hypoglycemia may develop diabetes later on. You may have pre-diabetes, and need to go on a diabetic diet. Meanwhile, make sure you have both protein and carbohydrates with all meals, and with all snacks, which you seem to be doing. You also might need to get a dietary consult and/or see an endocrinologist, for both are specially trained in working with people with blood sugar problems.
Avatar m tn i have been tested negative for diabetes, and they hypoglycemia seemed to have diapeared after the second pregnancy. however, the other day i was overwhelemed with the feelings of passing out when i got up in the morning and i grabbed my meter and was at 124 without having eaten anything yet, and then today i had an egg and toast for breakfast, a protein bar and a latte and started feeling sick so i tested again and was at 215. i ate a string cheese and tested again and was at 108.

Avatar n tn What is the relation between hypoglycemia, the thyroid, and diabetes? i have been more and more experiencing shaky spells and feeling faint... then i will eat a ...piece of fruit, or something, and a warm calming sensation comes over my body and i feel find. my family history indicatets thyroid problems, but my last t test came back normal, do people with hypoglycemea get diabetes later in life?
Avatar n tn With good control of your diabetes hypoglycemia episodes should be few. You do have to be especially careful with excercise, illness etc. I hope this helps clear things up a bit. Best of luck to you and if you need more information please come back. Also watch for other comments.
Avatar f tn Re-reading your post it sounds like you have these symptoms all the time and your blood sugar is normal. The only thing diabetes-related that accounts for that is if you have been very high for awhile then you feel low at normal blood sugars until you get used to them. So my guess is something else is causing these symptoms. If you are experiencing tightness in the chest I would be concerned about this and recommend an emergency clinic or something just to make sure it isn't heart related.
Avatar n tn Hi - I'm new here. I have pre-diabetes (about 2 years now) and have autoimmune degenerative neuropathy (CIDP for 26 years) unrelated to diabetes. I am not overweight, and am 32 years of age. My question is: does inflammation in the nervous system cause alterations in glucose metabolism? I'm currently having multiple daily bouts of hypoglycemia - my doctors can't/won't answer my question. I'm taking IVIG, Imuran and Ultram - no steroids or antidiabetics.
Avatar n tn i have never experienced nausea while having a low sugar, but it could be possible. do you have diabetes? have you been checked? if not look into it. you may be hypoglycemic also. talk with your doctor and ask them about it. good luck!!!
