665125 tn?1273023924 What treatment is available to raise my calcium level, something other than Calcitriol? What is the best absorbed calcium supplement? Is there something else I need to take to help with calcium absorbtion? I was told that one can not continue taking this high of calcium supplement for it can cause kidney problems. Yet, I fear for my bone health and my symptoms become worse when lowering my calcium supplement. I would appreciate any information you may have to share.
Avatar m tn Is Calcitriol vitamin D? Or am I getting that confused with something else? Yes, too much T4 or T3 drugs could do this. I don't know about Calcitriol. What are your most recent lab levels on FT4/FT3/TSH?
455126 tn?1212432198 I was instructed to take the Calcium with Vitamin D whenever I felt the tingles coming on- I found a supplement that contained both at Trader Joe's and would take two 1000 mg pills. I wish I knew why some people have them and some people don't. Just another fun aspect of the delightful journey known as Thyroid Cancer! BTW- welcome home!!!
Avatar n tn older dogs similar to yours using fluids, which owners can give at home if needed, an excellent, herbal kidney supplement, a home made, organic diet which we balance with a natural patented vitamin supplement. We monitor our success with blood and urine results. The goal is to reduce the Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN), Creatinine (Cr), Phosphorus (PO4) and Calcium (Ca) levels back down to normal.
Avatar n tn Can we do anything to get rid of the calcium deposits? Could the calcium be kidney stones? Is renal advanced (the powder supplement) really important for her to take? My vets are clueless. They can't tell me anything. We are crazy about our Pookee.
1916673 tn?1420233270 I have recently been reading a piece about calcitriol, which is a form of vitamin D that promotes the level of calcium in a canine body. This is not a new initiative in the treatment of kidney failure in dogs - and certainly should not be introduced without precautions - but it does have some promising effects.
536009 tn?1293190781 D because I was on large doses of calcitriol as well. Now that my levels are stabilizing, I am taking calcium w/ magnesium (from whole foods) and a multi-vitamin that has vit. D as well as the plain calcium. I also have viactiv chews w/ D & K if I feel like my levels are a little low. I went from 8 calcitriol & 16 calcium pills a day to only 2 to 3 calcium pills a day plus the multi-vitamin. so now I'm at 1000-1500mg of calcium a day instead of those mega-doses.
4294592 tn?1354141595 My concern is the vitamin d lab she ran. The doctor states my vitamin d is low. How is that possible on calcitriol? Also she wanted me to increase my calcitriol but what does that blood test measure? Active or inactive vitamin d?
393419 tn?1228447393 so. . .after my TT on 8/4/08, I had severe hypocalcemia. . .ended up back in the hospital for a week on iv calcium drip etc. etc. etc. i had an appointment with the endo today (Friday 9/19/08), and my calcium numbers were good: 9.6 totally normal he actually told me to stop taking the calcitriol, but when he tapped my face to do the "Chvostek's Sign", my lips spasmed. . .
Avatar n tn 5 glands removed, was in the hospital one night due to having 3.5 glands removed and put on calcitriol twice a day and 8 extra strength tums a day. because my calcium fell to 8 and my pth to 10 post surgery. Two days later my PTH was 6 (range 10-65) and my calcium was 8.5 (range 8.8-10,2). That was last week. This week, the surgeon said to take one calictriol and stay on the 8 tums a day and then said that an endo should now follow me.
Avatar m tn Treatment with vitamin-D(3) resulted in calcitriol production and induction of calcitriol target gene CYP24A1, indicating that these cells contain the full machinery for vitamin-D metabolism and activity. Notably, treatment with calcitriol resulted in HCV inhibition. Collectively, these findings suggest that vitamin-D(3) has an anti-viral activity which is mediated by its active metabolite.

Avatar n tn Do you supplement by diet only? That would be great. Do you take Calcitriol? I was on it for 4 days and hated it. Drier eyes and drier mouth {already had RA-I damage} flushed, and nauseated.. That's what scares me...your last comment,"then the hell began" This is ridiculous how complicated it all is, I hate it. Confusing because I was fine for three years, now all the calcium issues three years later, doesn't make sense to me!!
393419 tn?1228447393 This is a lot of medication - esp the calcitriol -- would retest soon to make sure Ca is not going too high. It's tough to absorb 2000mg of calcium at once.....so 4 tabs may not be necessary. We usually use 1-3 tabs of 500mg 3-4x/day - depending on the situation. Rocaltrol 0.5mcg 1-2x/day usually works. But I have had patients needing the doses that you describe, so best to retest.

4294592 tn?1354141595 I received a call from my doctor saying my vitamin d levels are low. She did not give me the range. I have hypoparathyroidism due to surgery i take 50mcg's of calcitriol a day to mantain calcium level. She wants me to add another 25mcg's of calcitriol because my vitamin d is low. Does that sound right? Because i would think that the test she did would have to be specific looking at the active and inactive forms of vitamin d. I dont know what to do but i dont think she is right..
Avatar m tn Vitamin D blocks the growth of cancer tumors. The active form of vitamin D, calcitriol, does most of the work. Calcitriol is made in the liver and in various organs affected by cancer. This form of vitamin D offers several benefits: * Activates vitamin D receptors, which turn genes on and off * Prevents cancer from starting (Calcitriol encourages cells to either adapt to their new organ or commit apoptosis [cell suicide].
Avatar n tn parathyroid failure after 3 years post TT? by LLV123, 4 minutes ago Hi, I had TT 3 years ago, had 1 para removed accidentally, 1 re implanted, 2 were "fine" Had low Ca post TT for a few weeks, then ok. Now, 3 years later, had some muscle twitching, had low ionized Ca {1.09, 1.10, 1.14 after I had infusions for 3 days of IV CA. Serum was ok, not high but low 8's. My endo put me on Calcitriol and said para's are failing. NO WAY!!
Avatar m tn I took my calcium supplement as dirrected that when I got home. My legs got tingly then it went through my body to my arms and then finally my lips and my face. The hospital was waiting for me when i got there. I couldnt walk, I could hardly talk, my neck felt kinked. Anyways I was admitted for over a week. My calcium levels never came back 2 normal. The doctors at the hospital basically gave up after all the IV's and everything else and they hardly saw a result.
Avatar m tn I had a TT on 8/4/08 and my levels just came back around recently. I started out on massive amounts of calcium & calcitriol (cit. d) and am now down to 1500mg of calcium & 1 calcitriol .5 a day. I'm still having weekly blood work to make sure that my levels stay up where they belong, but my endo is pretty sure that my parathyroids have finally kicked back in.

Avatar n tn I was a physical mental wreck and had sought other opinions. The new endo checked my PTH and said I would have to take Calcitriol for the rest of my life. As the parathyroids would not come back. Calcitriol is a prescription form of Vitamin D. It has helped me tremendously, although it has totally set of changes in my Thyroid meds. I was at a high dosage and still not functioning, I think my body was over compensating in some way.
Avatar f tn I am taking calcium supplements and vitamin d, but just learned that I need to be taking activated vitamin d, (Calcitriol). The problem is that Calcitriol gives me horrible stomach pains. Does anyone know of any other activated vitamin d I could use? More importantly, has anyone out there had their parathyroid function resume/completely recover after months of low parathyroid function? It's been over 5 months since my surgery, and they still haven't kicked in.
