Avatar n tn Aluminum hydroxide (ALOH) is currently recommended by Board Certified Veterinary Internists at the University of Davis, veterinary hospital as the product of choice to use in pets to effectively bind and eliminate excess phosphorus from the body. It has effectively replaced Epikacin for this purpose. Epikacin, is an old Calcium based product, formerly used to bind excess phosphorus and help eliminate it from the body, in pets with kidney failure.
Avatar n tn The Epikacin, which is currently made and marketed by the same company that markets the Azodyl is an outdated drug formerly given to help bind and remove excess phosphorus levels on dogs with kidney disease. Because Epikacin is calcium based, and excess calcium levels are another very detrimental side effect that dogs often experience secondarily to primary kidney disorders.
1916673 tn?1420233270 Thanks for the link. Last week my vet mentioned this therapy as a possibility for Mandy if we can get her BUN & Creatinine down to more normal levels. I had never heard of it before then, and then voila, I saw it mentioned in your post.
Avatar f tn My dog was diagnosed with kidney disease last year. I switched his food and also started giving him a herbal tonic called Tripsy from PetWellbeing. Since he's been on it, its like I have my old dog back. Please don't give up hope just yet. Check out Tripsy and ask your vet about it as well. Good Luck! http://www.petwellbeing.
665125 tn?1273023924 We keep the calcium level slightly low to minimize kidney damage from excess calcitriol and calcium intake.
Avatar f tn I am going through the same thing right now with my toy fox terrier Wrigley, who is also six and a half years old. He was actually diagnosed with early signs of kidney disease about a year ago, but has been fine until almost exactly four weeks ago, when he had a crisis. He is now in end stage renal failure, and is also having difficulty maintaining his blood calcium level. It is so sad for such young dogs to be going through this.
Avatar n tn Fluids given daily at home under the skin (Sub-Q) are vital to flush toxins from the body with kidney disease. The fluid of choice is 0.9% NaCl (sodium chloride) We do not recommend Lactated Ringers solution as it contains calcium and phosphorus, both of which are generally already elevated in dogs with failing kidneys. A home made diet is quite helpful. Many vets prescribe Hills K/D Diet. Hills K/D Diets are ok however they not very palatable or tasty and many dogs will not eat K/D.
Avatar n tn parathyroid failure after 3 years post TT? by LLV123, 4 minutes ago Hi, I had TT 3 years ago, had 1 para removed accidentally, 1 re implanted, 2 were "fine" Had low Ca post TT for a few weeks, then ok. Now, 3 years later, had some muscle twitching, had low ionized Ca {1.09, 1.10, 1.14 after I had infusions for 3 days of IV CA. Serum was ok, not high but low 8's. My endo put me on Calcitriol and said para's are failing. NO WAY!!
Avatar n tn 5 glands removed, was in the hospital one night due to having 3.5 glands removed and put on calcitriol twice a day and 8 extra strength tums a day. because my calcium fell to 8 and my pth to 10 post surgery. Two days later my PTH was 6 (range 10-65) and my calcium was 8.5 (range 8.8-10,2). That was last week. This week, the surgeon said to take one calictriol and stay on the 8 tums a day and then said that an endo should now follow me.
Avatar f tn Fluid therapy is the single most important factor in the treatment of kidney disease. The kidneys normally function to maintain fluid levels by concentrating the urine. With kidney disease, excess fluids are lost into the urine so dehydration is a major problem. Good nutrition is also critical. The goal is to decrease the workload on the kidneys by decreasing the amount of waste the kidneys must eliminate. Excess dietary protein, phosphorus, calcium and salt create a lot of waste.
Avatar m tn These cells express CYP27B1, the gene encoding for the enzyme responsible for the synthesis of the vitamin-D hormonally active metabolite, calcitriol. Treatment with vitamin-D(3) resulted in calcitriol production and induction of calcitriol target gene CYP24A1, indicating that these cells contain the full machinery for vitamin-D metabolism and activity. Notably, treatment with calcitriol resulted in HCV inhibition.
Avatar f tn The values for calcium and phosphorus are also important values to have because once the value of the calcium multiplied by the phosphorus level is less then 40, calcitriol may be used. Calcitriol is a natural, active form of Vitamin D that human dialysis patients used to take to regenerate the kidneys and my patients results with this have been excellent. The fluid diuresis is necessary to flush the ammonia from the body. Many dogs do not like K/D and therefore do not eat it.
1093351 tn?1317810854 Endocrinologist blew me off and said I had kidney failure and probably needed more vitamin D. I have one kidney so that startled me. That and being angry over being blown off led me to pay out of pocket for a kidney specialist and CT. Verdict : see an endocrinologist about parathyroid tumor/nothing wrong with kidney to cause declining function.
Avatar m tn Treatment with vitamin-D(3) resulted in calcitriol production and induction of calcitriol target gene CYP24A1, indicating that these cells contain the full machinery for vitamin-D metabolism and activity. Notably, treatment with calcitriol resulted in HCV inhibition. Collectively, these findings suggest that vitamin-D(3) has an anti-viral activity which is mediated by its active metabolite.
Avatar m tn I have been on a regime of Synthroid, Cytomel (T3) and Calcitriol for 18 months. Blood assays have been in the correct range for the past 14 months. No recurrence of any tumors During the past six months I have been experiencing high blood pressure and two TIA's (mini strokes). Is it possible that my supplement program could be elevating my blood pressure?
Avatar f tn Acquired form is generally due to an autoimmune disorder in which the body reacts against its own parathyroid cells. Resistance of kidney and bones to PTH is very rare. “Vitamin D and calcium supplements are the primary treatments for this disease regardless of the cause. The only exception is when the inactivity of PTH is due to hypomagnasemia which is readily treated with magnesium supplementation. At this time, a replacement form of PTH is not available.
4294592 tn?1354141595 My concern is the vitamin d lab she ran. The doctor states my vitamin d is low. How is that possible on calcitriol? Also she wanted me to increase my calcitriol but what does that blood test measure? Active or inactive vitamin d?
393419 tn?1228447393 so. . .after my TT on 8/4/08, I had severe hypocalcemia. . .ended up back in the hospital for a week on iv calcium drip etc. etc. etc. i had an appointment with the endo today (Friday 9/19/08), and my calcium numbers were good: 9.6 totally normal he actually told me to stop taking the calcitriol, but when he tapped my face to do the "Chvostek's Sign", my lips spasmed. . .
455126 tn?1212432198 You may want to ask at your appointment if they ended up removing any of your parathyroids, and how many if they did. I had surgery in January and now only have one parathyroid so am still on calcium 3x's per day and calcitriol, my parathyroid is finaly starting to kick back in but it's still a bit low to be able to take me off all that completely yet. Sometimes if I feel any tingling I will take a tums (that's in addition to what I already take) just as a quick fix.
Avatar n tn For example hypertension (high blood pressure) may be a cause or an effect of kidney disease. That should be assessed and medicated as required. Some renal disease patients feel nauseous due to stomach irritation or ulceration. Often a coating agent, sucralfate, is used along with antacids such as famotidine (Pepcid) ranitidine (Zantac) and others to address this. There are also other treatable issues that arise with chronic kidney disease which you should be made aware of by your doctor.
Avatar n tn Hello, The symptoms are definitely suggestive of kidney disease. You should get an ultrasound kidneys and kidney function tests done to confirm the diagnosis. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
Avatar n tn I would encourage both of you to talk with his endocrinologist about looking into possible changes that can bring his a1c levels well down below 7. That truly is his best protection not only against kidney disease, but against other complications. If sugar levels are maintained at near normal levels, damage cannot happen.
Avatar f tn I have a 14 year old cocker spaniel who was recently diagnosed with kidney disease. She originally got sick a few weeks ago with pacreatitis, and when she recovered her lab work showed the kidney problems. We have been giving her fluids every other night as well as the epakitin powder with her food. Her blood report was better this last time. However she seems pretty good, has a good appetite ect and I'm wondering if there is anything else that could be causing this disease?
Avatar m tn i have kidney disease my creantine 2.12 my gfr 33.5 my normal is 1.
