Common Questions and Answers about Bupropion weight gain

wellbutrin

Avatar f tn Hi there...I take Wellbutrin XL (300 mg extended release bupropion) and no I didn't gain weight on it. I have been on differing doses for over 2 years. Also, no loss of sex drive if that is important to you which is a common side effect of most of the other medications used for anxiety.
Avatar f tn i just got sucribed this and its this known to gain weight or loss weight?
Avatar m tn s known not to have some of the nasty side effects of other antidepressants such as sexual side effects and weight gain. But only trying it will tell, and be aware of its stimulating nature.
Avatar n tn Avanza (mirtazapine) is associated with weight gain. Have you tried Wellbutrin (bupropion)? It is an antidepressant associated with weight loss. Wellbutrin is likely safer to use in combo with Effexor than Reductil (sibutramine).
Avatar f tn It is my general doctor, as i don't go to a psychiatrist. I was diagnosed with anxiety, not depression. I also have a prescription for ativan to take as needed, which i never normally have to use. Either medicine (bupropion or pristiq) works for me for my anxiety, its just the side effects are the issue here. My doctor told me with pristiq, most people don't have issues with side effects.
Avatar m tn t need. Looking for some suggestions.
Avatar n tn t think that it is going to make you lose huge amounts of weight but rather it is not going to bloat you and make you gain weight, at least from my experience. Of course eating habits and exercise always play a role as well. When I went from 150 to 300 I suffered side effects that lasted at least 4 weeks. They were not pleasant and I needed to take klonopin to get through them...so there is that aspect of a dosage increase as well.
Avatar f tn I started looking at questions about PPIs and weight gain and found other things that concerned me. My VA Dr is shall we say less than desirable. Here are my issues. I have been taking protonix for many years. I took another type before it but VA decided it was too expensive and quit providing it. Over the years I have had significant weight gain, a lot of which I attributed to my por eating habits and decreasing exercise due to severe joint problems. Now I'm not so sure.
Avatar n tn • the Tricyclic antidepressants such as Amitriptyline (Elavil), Imipramine (Tofranil), and Doxepin (Sinequan) • the Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) such as Tranylcypromine (Parnate), Isocarboxazid (Marplan) and Phenelzine (Nardil) • the Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as Paroxetine (Paxil) • the atypical anti-depressants such as Mirtazapine (Remeron) and Trazodone.
Avatar n tn My husband das been diagnosed with depression and anxiety had been taking Effexor XR 75mgs or about 1 year however the side effects ie weight gain tiredness and loss of libido was troubling him. The switched to cymbaltor, due to high costs (even with insurance) of this medication is wanting to switch to somethig that is less expensive and that has a generic available. What about Wellbutrin or do you have any other suggeations?
Avatar n tn If you haven't adopted a healthy lifestyle (reasonable diet and exercise plan), along with taking the bupropion, there's a good chance you could regain the weight. That's a major issue with taking medications for weight loss.
Avatar f tn I'm currently on 300 bupropion, along with topamax 100 and still have had no weight losse. I just started the 300 bupropion after being on 150 last week and have already had crying spells but this was the week of my period so I was thinking I just could be "emotional". Before I was on Zoloft 25-150 bupropion but I ate to much on it, I'm hoping for weight loss but every antidepressant I take makes me eat what to do I do??
Avatar f tn I'm on 10mg of Prozac and have noticed some weight gain within the past 2 months or so and my doctor has suggested I start taking Wellbutrin along with the Prozac but my biggest concern is having panic attacks. I suffer from panic disorder w/ agoraphobia and the Prozac has been helping but I'm afraid that adding on the Wellbutrin may counteract that. (I know it is considered a stimulant for a lot of people - hence the usual weight loss.
950277 tn?1247274551 Also, Wellbutrin tend to NOT make you gain weight and does NOT affect your libido. I take 150mg in the morning and 150mg in the afternoon. It works for now.
Avatar n tn SSRIs have way too many negative side effects I believe such as weight gain, sexual dysfunction and even increased depression. Another reason why I think bupropion is a much better choice and should actually be the first choice treatment rather than an SSRI. The other thing is that even though bupropion only inhibits the reuptake of dopamine and norepinephrine it does also indirectly increase serotonin as well.
Avatar m tn I am hesitant to try it because I am afraid of more weight gain. Is there anyone out there who had a lot of weight gain with Zoloft but then switched to Effexor and had success at weight loss? I currently exercise regularly and watch what I eat. Thank you for your answers in advance.
Avatar f tn Hi I switched from Fluoxetine to Citalopram about 6 months ago as the Fluoxetine was making me gain weight. Since I've been on Citalopram I've put on even more, and am now about 2 stone (14kg) heavier than I was before I started. I don't want to come off ADs as they're helping me so much, but at the same time I don't know if I can cope with any more weight gain. Has anyone experienced weight gain with certain antidepressants then been able to lose with a different one?
Avatar f tn It really gave me myself back. But I stopped taking it because it made me gain weight, which in and of itself was really depressing. The whole time I was on it, I exercised like a fiend and didn't eat that much. But it dramatically increased my craving for carbs, so I blew up like a mini whale, no matter how much I exercised. I've been off of it for more than a year, and still exercise like mad. But I cannot lose the weight.
5371853 tn?1367025372 At the age of 30, after a dramatic weight loss due to a vertical sleeve gastrectomy (50 lbs!) I started to experience SEVERE depression and anxiety for the first time in my lifea year ago. No history of emotional problems, nor is my life troubled. It's actually quite stable. I have spent this year exploring every medical possibility: B12, thyroid, neuro issues, heart issues, thiamine, and more. I broke down and started bupropion 8 weeks ago, I am up to 300XL and have been for 6 weeks.
Avatar f tn I'm currently on 300 bupropion/100 topamax for migraines. I don't like the bupropion as much as Zoloft but had to stop it bc I ate so much on the Zoloft. Is there anything someone could recommend to make me loose weight along with taking Zoloft?
7001009 tn?1386963933 You're posting in the anxiety community, and wellbutrin is mostly used as an antidepressant because of its stimulating properties (although it is often used as an adjunct to an ssri for those who suffer sexual side effects and weight gain). So it could be the stimulating properties that are wearing you out, though it's hard to say from what you report. I do think you've been on it long enough to know if it was going to work, most likely, but we're all different.
Avatar f tn Another thought is that weight gain among adults with adhd is common due to (they think) lack of impulse control. If the Vyvanse can control this the Contrave might not be needed? This is why I kind of assume the prescriptions were from two different doctors. Hope this helps.
Avatar n tn Thank you for responding, I have been on Paxil for 7yrs and have had sexual side effects and also weight gain. I asked if I could be put on something else that doesn't have these effects. So the doctor told me to stop the paxil and replace it with the Wellbutrin. I have been on the drug for 5 days at 150 mg and have had side effects. It feel like my body is having jolts or zaps. I feel dizzy and can't move to fast because of it, I am nervous about driving as well.
1342640 tn?1276181928 While there are no absolute contraindications regarding cigarette smoking and pharmacotherapy specifically, the hydrocarbons in cigarette smoke (not the nicotine) limit the efficacy of most drugs that undergo hepatic, enzymatic metabolism. The hydrocarbons found in cigarette smoke are powerful inducers of the Cytochrome P-450 enzymatic pathway - the same pathway that is responsible for the metabolism of most drugs, including psychotropics such as Benzodiazepines and SSRI's.
