Common Questions and Answers about Budesonide equivalent to prednisone

Avatar f tn s Colitis. As I had stopped prednisone to go onto budesonide, I had no protection in the colon, hence the flare. After leaving hospital (where I was on holiday in Florida) I saw my gastro in England and asked for methotrexate, oral at first 25 mg a week, now for the past 6-7 yrs weekly injections of 12.5mg. Doing very well, and although there can be serious side effects such as liver toxicity and disruption to the bone marrow, I am monitored monthly and have no problems.
Avatar f tn I suddenly had developed wheezing and coughing after exposure to some toxic paint plus for a couple of years when I climb stairs I am short of breath. He said to take meds for a month at one dose and for another month at a half dose and to thereafter see another pulmonologist. He prescribed three meds, one ('Nasonex') that was already taking based on an ENT's recommendation. I am able to find that one easily in many countries where I travel.
Avatar m tn Have you tried saline sinus rinses like the neti pot? There isn't much blood flow to the sinuses which is why antibiotics don't always work. This helps to flush out the sinuses of whatever is irriating them and helps the cilia (the little hair cells that help to move mucous through) heal and work better. It has helped immersely for my allergies and greatly reduces the time it takes for me to get through a sinus cold. I use the neli-med system that is available in co-op and walmart.
Avatar f tn Thanks so much for the comments. Its good to know what meds work. Q: Does the dr. give you Budesonide when your having a flare up or do you take it like Asacol on a regular basis to control Crohn's? I'm so afraid to take prednisone again, I didn't like how I had so many side effect with it. I have been hearing a lot about Methotextrate (thats what you meant by mtx, right?) All the things I have heard are good. Q: Do you take mtx on a reg. basis?
Avatar m tn He developed diabetes and pancreatitis and had to be hospitalized for 10 days! We have now switched to 1mg of Budesonide a day to help with the inflammation and to try and bring the diabetes under control, we are giving our cat 1cc of insulin a day and we have switched his diet to Nature's Variety Instinct brand of cat food in the rabbit formulation.
Avatar m tn I took Primatene mist for asthma 2 months back but my doctor asked me to stop using it and prescribed PREDNISONE, ALBUTEROL inhaler and BUDESONIDE and I have been taking these for past two months. My tests came negative. My question are 1) Is test conclusive? 2) Does medications mentioned above cause false negative? 3) It was 8 panel test which includes Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HSV 1, HSV 2, HIV and syphilis. All except HSV 1 came negative.
Avatar f tn After a few days of suffering side effects and getting much worse I went back to the doctor and he confirmed that I am allergic to budesonide, which he said is quite unusual. He prescribed me atrovent but from what I understand it is usually a substitute for ventolin not steroids. He directed me to take both atrovent and ventolin 2 times a day for a month but I don't really have a long term treatment plan. The doctor seemed a bit stumped as to what else to do.
1523893 tn?1301579774 Last week my neuro put me on a 3 day dose of Prednisone to hopefully offset the flare I was in the middle of. He put me on 3 days of oral pred, quite a huge dose (25 pills per day, each being 50 mg). I took my three days worth of pills hoping I would see a difference, but have yet to feel any better. In fact I am worse and I am wondering if I should see a physician about my symtoms. Weight gain, no energy, facial swelling, horrible fog, painful skin on my neck and shoulders.
Avatar m tn Last year I was hospitalized with Stevens Johnsons Syndrome(SJS), which left me with chronic dry eye and chronic bronchitis although I did not experience any obvious respiratory symptoms. Prior to that I was absolutely healthy and played sports and worked out fairly regularly. After a few months recovering from this, when I started strenuous exercises i.e. running, sprinting, I felt my chest tightening up.
1137036 tn?1263515995 What do you think, is it likely the sinus infection moved to my ear tubes, should I try prednisone or steroid nose spray or both? Any ideas, other thoughts? It is difficult to explain all this to the Thai doctor with the language differences, but I will tell him for sure about the throat clearing that started 3 months ago and ear pain now.
Avatar n tn Hi i am having throat tightness everyday for 15 years. I am regularly using Ventloin, Fomertrol+budesonide and Motelukast+LC. The only problem is breathlessness arising from throat tightness. I never wheeze in the life. The throat tightness is getting reduced when i take Ventolin. The doctor say i don't have to take ventolin beacause Fomertrol+budesonide and Motelukast+LC. will prevent the difficulty. But only medicines which seems to be working is Ventolin and Motelukast+LC.
635835 tn?1272539383 According to a recent survey of these centres performed by DPIC, it was found that regimens vary from 1250 mg prednisone every 2 days for 5 doses, to 1000 - 1250 mg prednisone daily for 3-5 days. The MS Clinic located at UBC Hospital in Vancouver has used a regimen of oral prednisone 625 mg twice daily at breakfast and lunch for 3 days with no tapering doses.
666513 tn?1256917455 Still living in Limboland, and sick nearly a year later, I asked my Doctor if he'd prescribe some prednisone. I've noticed in the past that it makes me feel better. He prescribed a medrol pack (I'm not sure if it was equivalent to the prednisone doses I'd received in the past for my neck and back). It made an amazing difference in my fatigue. I haven't seen any relief in nearly a year.
Avatar m tn Their pharmacist puts into one capsule the drug that is equivalent to 25 prednisone tabs. It is much easier on the stomach. You can read more about it at: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.
Avatar m tn Welcome to the forum. This was a low risk exposure for herpes. Condoms work reasonably well in protection for vaginal sex, and oral sex is safe sex -- even unprotected. I would judge your overall odds of catching genital herpes from this single sexual contact to be somewhere around 1 chance in 10,000. That's equivalent to having a similar sexual experience once daily for 27 years before herpes might be likely!
Avatar n tn Over that period I have tried different combinations of Prednisolone, Budesonide, Salazopyrin, Singulair and Colpermin, all with limited success. Presently, I am taking Budesonide (9mg daily) and Salazopyrin (150mg daily). Whilst this allows me to function normally (i.e. normal bowel movements) I have discomfort, bloating and cramping all day, every day. Has anybody ever come through this disease to lead a normal life, or has anyone treated a patient that has done so?
17080824 tn?1453552185 t take any form of drugs. and do not smoke, do not drink and I am a vegetarian. Yes I am inhaling Budesonide Powder to tackle with chronic cough issue. Is it the reason then ? Thank you doctor for your reply and suggestion.
959034 tn?1253671476 How much prednisone are you taking daily? I understand that 7 - 10 mg of prednisone is equivalent to your strongest steroid inhalers that are available. V.
Avatar f tn My husband just got diagnosed with emphysema and sent home with steroid inhalers and no instructions on what to do with them. Or even which one to use when. All he knows is not to take both at the same time. And he is already skipping doses because he doesn't know if there is a need. Its Advair and Symbicort. I am hoping they will send him to a pulmonologist who might be more forth coming with info. He probably just has a mild case and I'd like to keep it that way.
Avatar f tn I wonder if this could be an autoimmune disorder? Like autoimmune hemolytic anemia? If by any chance it is, and if Prednisone doesn't have the desired effect, it may be necessary to start immune-suppressant therapy. I know that might sound dramatic, but it may help him if this is the case. My mother lived many many years on immune suppressants quite successfully (she was treated for Rheumatoid Arthritis) Of course, that may not be the case. It's just something that occurred to me.
Avatar f tn As a point of reference, the recommended dose of steroids to treat an MS relapse is equivalent to taking 25 of those prednisone tablets in one dose. A three-day course of steroids would require 75 tablets. That should illustrate for you the need for a greater amount to treat your symptoms. Welcome again and I hope we see you around.
776872 tn?1247938680 Prednisone is a "rescue therapy" - i.e. it is used to help bring an acute flareup in control. Depending on dosage and length of use, it can cause multiple side effects, including weight gain, insomnia, mood swings etc. If you don't see reduction in frequency of bowel movements or amount of blood, check back with your doctor - you may need higher dosage or other meds in parallel. Note Crohn's is unsolved, so best the meds and docs can do is try to control it and its symptoms.
Avatar m tn I've had a terrible headache that comes and goes, but has been burning throughout my face, top and sides of head for over a month and nausea for the past two weeks. Generally, the worst attacks or "flare ups" as I can best describe them occur first thing in the morning when I get up and at night time.
Avatar f tn I have to agree a slower taper will be much easier on her also better to monitor her response rather than put her system into a rapid reduction, only reduce by 1/4 at a time not 50% that's way too fast, and any Vet would/should be in agreement with that. Plus get an inhaler ASAP, she does need to have this for emergencies if nothing else.
Avatar f tn ve been on 3-10 mg of steroids (prednisone is how it is called here) for the last five months because I continue to have mild to severe attacks that need me to have a portable oxygen tank a nebulizer and of course my broncodilator inhaler wherever I go. This dosage has worked well for me, varying it depending on my symptoms.
