Hi, I broke my fibula bone above the ankle january 14th this year and was treated with a fiberglass cast a week later. The bone was still in place with a clean break.They told me 6 weeks to heal before i get cast off, but i was in a splint style cast for the first week, does that count as one week? and also should nt have the doctor have asked me to come in for check up x-rays just to make sure the bone is healing properly? i live in a small community was treated by a regular doctor a i think.
I was in a half cast, basically on the back of my leg and below the foot for a touch over a week, so I was unable to move my ankle and leg and was on crutches. Then 2 days ago I went to the outpatients department and the doc took the cast off me and told me to start walking on it with the aid of crutches as it isn't the weight bearing bone.
He said that the bone will heal by itself without the cast and even with me putting a bit of pressure on it.
The usual healing time for a mid-shaft Tibia and Fibula fracture treated with cast immobilisation is 12 to 16 weeks. This is followed by rehabilitation with a Chartered Physiotherapist to restore the range of ankle and knee movement, and to restore the muscle strength that is lost during the immobilisation period. I think it is too early to remove the cast in your case. May be you can ask your doctor about plastic cast walker, which is much lighter and allows you to walk to some extent.
t need surgery and my bone was repositioned and i was put in a cast. I had my sixteenth birthday with a cast on my right leg and i have had to cancel my driving test as i can't drive with a cast on. I will be with a full walking cast for another 2 weeks (its been 5) and then i will have a short walking cast for another 3 weeks. How long after that can i drive again and also how long until i play soccer. I will be going to physical therapy.
She jumped off of a chair and broke her front leg. The vet said the cast would be enough and the surgery is not required. However the x-ray shows that the bones are not aligned perfectly. I understand that he is a professional but I have already had experience with some incompetent vets and cannot rule out this one to be another example. I will probably get an advise from another vet but also want to hear your opinions. Has anyone had the same kind of problem? Here are the x-ray shots.
ll need to go in a cast for 6 more weeks. That means before I can walk it will be 9 weeks from the injury date. All for a broken fibula and sprained deltoid ligament. I think the doctor is being extremely conservative, I need to be weight bearing to get back to work. Does this seem like a rather stiff sentence? Shouldn't it be 6 weeks from the injury date assuming normal healing occurs on the bone?
( I found that I was getting very bad dry skin around the toe area of the cast..At night I would take a wash cloth and rub it softly with soap and then apply vaseline..My foot is still in the cast but the skin around my toes and bottom of my foot is soft and nice..Just a thought if you care...
Being that I am a fit, healthy 24 year old and Albert is a 74 year old arthritis suffering amputee - why is it that when I broke my leg, I was made to keep my leg in a cast for 8 weeks, then undergo 3 further weeks of phisio/rehabilitation to slowly re-introduce weight to it, but Albert is asked to put his full 14 stone load onto his broken leg just 2 weeks after surgery...not once but twice ?!
I am very concerned about the mobility of my hand after the pins come out. Next week is my surgery to have them removed. At four weeks after surgery my cast ( casted from just below my elbow to the tips of all my fingers) was removed and my hand is still very swollen and my fingers wouldn't move at all. I couldn't even flatten out my hand. They put me back in a cast until my surgery. I have a feeling this is going to be a long recovery...anybody have any idea at all what I could excpect?
In 2007 I badly broke my leg (my toes were touching my knee bad), I was in a cast for almost my entire seventh grade year and for the first four or so months I had to be in a wheelchair with the cast up to my thigh. I started to be able to move around really well after the first month and about two or so months before they put me in a boot i was able to jump around my house on one leg for very long distances and then eventually walk around on my cast.
I have broken my ankle 3 weeks ago and now I can feel the bones cracking and popping around my ankle, I was placed in a cast 3 weeks ago and I am still in the cast and I can not walk . I am really confused as to why my bones feel like they are popping..... The pain as subsided but I just have this weird thing going on, the consultant said I will have to have this cast on for another 4 weeks, stressed out as I have 4 kids to take care of and I can't walk!
The Spanish doctors initially saw no break, but a second doctor noticed a break in the talus bone and put my leg in a half cast for support whilst travelling back by plane to England. Once home I went to hospital thinking they would put the leg in a full cast but the doctor said I had just severe swelling and couldn't see a break!! I have a tubular bandage now and obviously am still in a great deal of pain. Do I need a second opinion. Regards.
The application of a cast means that immobilization of the limb is required till the time the cast is removed, to promote healing of the fracture which may take 4-6 weeks. Trying to move the limb unnecessarily may cause fracture displacement and improper healing. Casting does not heal the fracture immediately but just provides support and immobilization required for natural healing.
Normally 6 to 8 weeks. Was it specifically the calcaneous that was fractured? And as Dr. Vinod (he's good) said get a proper clinical examination, follow ups are very important when it comes to proper post fracture care. If you were put into a walking cast compliance is of utmost importance for proper healing!
I'm going on 8 wks in a leg cast. I'm due in 10 weeks. All I want to do is WALK into and out of the hospital!! I feel your frustration and totally get your concerns and worries.
To make a long story short, after walking around for a week, i finally had it x-rayed and found out I had broke my tib/fib/ankle - spent six weeks in a cast after that, then PT and to this day I still have horrible rproblems with my ankle. So please, don't feel that it can't be broken just because you can put some weight on it.
The Fibula is still broken and has no stability (no hard cast can be applied due to the open wound up the inner side of her leg). Is it normal for the fib not to be stabilized using a fixation or any other means? Also, the Tibia was a crushing fracture; there is a space of just over 2 inches where the bone was crushed. The Ortho Surgeon left the largest pieces of crushed bone in place and said that it would help the bone heal (a ΒΌ inch gap exist between the top and bottom portions of this bone.
