Broken leg cast swelling

Common Questions and Answers about Broken leg cast swelling

Avatar n tn I broke my leg and had surgery over 8 to 9 months ago and this leg is still swollen. What can I do to reduce the swelling so I can wear my boots again. Thanks.
Avatar f tn Prior to surgery, my ankle was placed in a plaster cast, which proved very discomforting due to swelling of my foot. After surgery my ankle was bandaged up in a compression cast and tomorrow I'm due to have a plaster cast put on once again. Since surgery there has been minimal pain in my ankle (although a momentous amount of bruising along my leg) It appears that I'm experiencing a great deal of pain in my knee.
Avatar f tn D ... been there, done that, hate the T.Shirt...
Avatar n tn Tibia is the shin bone that bears most of the weight and the Fibula is the splint bone located on the outside of the lower leg. In the case of a closed fracture there may be swelling and discolouration due to the large amounts of blood that emanate from a fractured bone. The usual healing time for a mid-shaft Tibia and Fibula fracture treated with cast immobilisation is 12 to 16 weeks.
Avatar m tn they constantly rotated her legs and stretched them out again to check her hips before fracture was dianosed. then they put a cast on on the bottom of her leg instead of the top. would all of these mistakes have made the fracture worse than it originally was.
Avatar f tn I had surgery that night with the ortho plating the bone and securing with 8 screws. I had some swelling issues with the first cast and was unable to have my foot unelevated at all. If I did, my toes turned blue and I felt an intense swelling in the area of my ankle. I saw the ortho yesterday and had my cast replaced. The surgeon did not spend much time with me and wouldn't let me ask any question.

Avatar f tn suffered broken ankle in May 2010. Had surgery with plate and screws to fix. 2 weeks no weight bareing, 8 + weeks in camwalker boot - weight bearing as tolerated. Then moved to right ankle element brace and cane. Have completed 2 sessions of PT. Have chronic pain i ... [More] n foot/ankle with every step I take. Both my foot/leg are still swollen and discolored. Taking pain meds daily. Recently returned to work (4 hours per day sitting).
Avatar m tn I dont think you want a brace on your leg so tight it hurts.. You need a soft cast with some room for the swelling. keep it elevated!!!!
1235186 tn?1339127464 I guess fear of getting caught with drugs or being an accomplice to their overdose. They put me in bed, elevated my leg, and put ice on it. Sunday morning a bit more swollen and discolored. I had pain with numbness and tingling in my toes. We had crutches here and I wrapped it with a ace bandage. Went to church and out to dinner with friends. As the day went on it got worse. Now this morning my whole foot was discolored and very swollen, like I could pop it with a pin. Off to the ER I went.
Avatar n tn 20 years ago I had a bruise the size of a softball in the center of my shin - before it healed I broke my leg - spiral fracture of the tibia and fibula - in the same spot. I was in a hip cast and then a walking cast for several months. About a year ago my shin starting hurting and swelling at the break point whenever I drove long distances. The distance I can drive without pain and swelling is getting progressively shorter. Used to be an 8 hour + drive - now it's an hour and a half.
Avatar f tn Both times he said everything looked good. Right now I am in an air cast and am told to start putting graduall weight over the last few weeks until I see him on September 21st. The question I have and am worried about. When I saw him in August I received x-rays. He told me exactly this 'there is not a lot of significant healing'. What could that mean? I only saw him for a moment so I had no time to ask.
2083449 tn?1381358308 I'm feeling much better now! The swelling has gone down! My poor toe looks like a rainbow of colors, but I think the shock of the accident has worn off! The pain has gone from sharp and stabbing, to dull and achy! I'm still taking Antibiotics, and Anti-inflammatorys. Plus I keep it wrapped and covered in Neosporin? That's it! I haven't taken a Tramadol since yesterday! You all were right when you said the Anti-inflammatorys would help more than the Tramadol!
Avatar f tn No surgery has been scheduled until he sees the results of the next set of x-rays Since the plaster cast was put on my mom has experienced more pain and more swelling on the top of her foot just to the left of her ankle as well, everytime she lowers her leg she says that it feels like her ankle (near her achilles) is popping and that her pain is equivelent to the pain she had when she originally broke her ankle. She also complains that her casted ankle feels like its on fire.
Avatar f tn I fractured the lower part of my fibula near the growth plate one week ago, and was in a Splint for 3 days. 4 days ago, I got a short leg cast, and about 3 days ago, when i had it elevated my ankle didn't hurt, but when I put my leg down, like to sit normal or stand on my other foot, I can feel my fracture, like the actual bone, hurting and then an immense pressure feels like a vice around my ankle, the pressure fades after a few minutes, but as long as my foot is not elevated, my bone hurts.
Avatar n tn I was given the choice to do a cast or metal rod with pins through my leg for a speedy recovery in witch i choose. It was put through the lower part of my leg down to my ankle Big mistake! I can't even walk a mile without my leg killing me. Hurts from my Knee down to where there is a small bump (feels like bone) on top of my ankle. I need to know if the rod and pins can be removed? If so how fast is the recovery and will the pain go away?
Avatar n tn I'm not sure how long recovery time is but I assume that it is atleast 6 weeks(the usual time people are in a cast for broken bones)You may have to go back to the doctor and get a note to keep you off work for a short time so you can do more ice and heat and rest. Does your work give paid disibillity for medical problems (not on the job injury)? Good luck with your healing process.
Avatar n tn After casting it for about 2 months i kept complaining of hot intense pain once the cast removed, my foot was spotty and pink. A couple days later i went to my gp he said i had invection in the foot. Tendonisous? Stonge Antibiotic's given My work paid for Physio as the hospital took 8 weeks to make an appointment. i did 8 sessions i only had 20% movement. I now have had 8 weeks worth of sessions i can move it better but still in alot pain with mass swelling and discolouration.
Avatar n tn no numbness or anything on the back of my leg. While the leg is numb, it still gets itcy and it is very irritating to scratch it. If I stand or walk for too long, the burning sensation comes into play, and I have to sit down, because it also hurts my lower back, makes my back feel like it will break if I don't sit down. This has been going on for 23 years! And not one doctor can tell me what is wrong...
Avatar f tn I'm wondering if you've pinched off veins and/or lymphatic vessels .... enough swelling CAN do it too. Broken or no, you may need crutches to allow your leg to heal. Please see a physician? Good luck and keep us posted!
Avatar f tn that helps with swelling. Try not to put anything in the cast to itch it, although I know all too well how bad it does itch!Make sure the crutches are adjusted properly, and don't put all the weight on your armpits, lol..that'll hurt! Just be careful and rest the leg and do not put any pressure on it til the doc says you can. I really hope that this isn't going to be a set back for you.
645390 tn?1338558977 Also, sometimes wrapping it so it's not mobile and I hate to say it but even sometimes a cast. I'm not sure how it's broken so I'd ask the doctor before wrapping it myself. You don't want it healing around the wrapping and it becoming deformed. Did you have x-rays? I've broken my little toe a few times but never got x-rays. I could just tell.
Avatar m tn At first I had an open plaster because of the swelling, after two weeks had a closed plaster, and this became too tight again, so am with an open plaster cast again, my next Xray is 10 days from now. The swelling appears undiminished, though I do my best to keep the leg elevated and also some regular exercises during the day. Is this usual?
Avatar n tn Out of the blue the pain stopped but returned unrelentingly six months later, it has not stopped since. Anyway a few months after the fall I began having periodic swelling in my leg, hip and lower leg. Not really any pain at that time but a few months after, my hip bone began to get larger and my clothes would not fit normally. I went to my internist who gave me an injection which did nothing.
Avatar n tn So, next I went to a health food store and bought a natuaral diuretic and I used those tight stockings, both of which did nothing, the swelling continued, actually I think the swelling got worse. This swelling, I might add, just came out of no where. 1st my feet began to hurt real bad, like I had been standing for 3 days or something, but I hadn't, then suddenly they swelled up like balloons.
