Broken leg cast swelling

Common Questions and Answers about Broken leg cast swelling

broken-leg

I broke my leg and had surgery over 8 to 9 months ago and this leg is still swollen. What can I do to reduce the swelling so I can wear my boots again. Thanks.
Prior to surgery, my ankle was placed in a plaster cast, which proved very discomforting due to swelling of my foot. After surgery my ankle was bandaged up in a compression cast and tomorrow I'm due to have a plaster cast put on once again. Since surgery there has been minimal pain in my ankle (although a momentous amount of bruising along my leg) It appears that I'm experiencing a great deal of pain in my knee.
D ... been there, done that, hate the T.Shirt...
Tibia is the shin bone that bears most of the weight and the Fibula is the splint bone located on the outside of the lower leg. In the case of a closed fracture there may be swelling and discolouration due to the large amounts of blood that emanate from a fractured bone. The usual healing time for a mid-shaft Tibia and Fibula fracture treated with cast immobilisation is 12 to 16 weeks.
I had surgery that night with the ortho plating the bone and securing with 8 screws. I had some swelling issues with the first cast and was unable to have my foot unelevated at all. If I did, my toes turned blue and I felt an intense swelling in the area of my ankle. I saw the ortho yesterday and had my cast replaced. The surgeon did not spend much time with me and wouldn't let me ask any question.
Here's my story , i had a broken tibia and fibula as well i was trying tio help a female from getting beaten by his boyfriend , it was slippery oitside my right leg went forward and my left leg went backwards and my big ***( lol ) landed on top of my ankle and distored my ankle and broke my tibia and fibula , i went to the hospital where i stayed two nights then on monday i had to go see the bone doctor at the other hosiptal and told me that your fracture was a bad one .
suffered broken ankle in May 2010. Had surgery with plate and screws to fix. 2 weeks no weight bareing, 8 + weeks in camwalker boot - weight bearing as tolerated. Then moved to right ankle element brace and cane. Have completed 2 sessions of PT. Have chronic pain i ... [More] n foot/ankle with every step I take. Both my foot/leg are still swollen and discolored. Taking pain meds daily. Recently returned to work (4 hours per day sitting).
I dont think you want a brace on your leg so tight it hurts.. You need a soft cast with some room for the swelling. keep it elevated!!!!
20 years ago I had a bruise the size of a softball in the center of my shin - before it healed I broke my leg - spiral fracture of the tibia and fibula - in the same spot. I was in a hip cast and then a walking cast for several months. About a year ago my shin starting hurting and swelling at the break point whenever I drove long distances. The distance I can drive without pain and swelling is getting progressively shorter. Used to be an 8 hour + drive - now it's an hour and a half.
Both times he said everything looked good. Right now I am in an air cast and am told to start putting graduall weight over the last few weeks until I see him on September 21st. The question I have and am worried about. When I saw him in August I received x-rays. He told me exactly this 'there is not a lot of significant healing'. What could that mean? I only saw him for a moment so I had no time to ask.
I'm feeling much better now! The swelling has gone down! My poor toe looks like a rainbow of colors, but I think the shock of the accident has worn off! The pain has gone from sharp and stabbing, to dull and achy! I'm still taking Antibiotics, and Anti-inflammatorys. Plus I keep it wrapped and covered in Neosporin? That's it! I haven't taken a Tramadol since yesterday! You all were right when you said the Anti-inflammatorys would help more than the Tramadol!
No surgery has been scheduled until he sees the results of the next set of x-rays Since the plaster cast was put on my mom has experienced more pain and more swelling on the top of her foot just to the left of her ankle as well, everytime she lowers her leg she says that it feels like her ankle (near her achilles) is popping and that her pain is equivelent to the pain she had when she originally broke her ankle. She also complains that her casted ankle feels like its on fire.
I was given the choice to do a cast or metal rod with pins through my leg for a speedy recovery in witch i choose. It was put through the lower part of my leg down to my ankle Big mistake! I can't even walk a mile without my leg killing me. Hurts from my Knee down to where there is a small bump (feels like bone) on top of my ankle. I need to know if the rod and pins can be removed? If so how fast is the recovery and will the pain go away?
I'm not sure how long recovery time is but I assume that it is atleast 6 weeks(the usual time people are in a cast for broken bones)You may have to go back to the doctor and get a note to keep you off work for a short time so you can do more ice and heat and rest. Does your work give paid disibillity for medical problems (not on the job injury)? Good luck with your healing process.
After casting it for about 2 months i kept complaining of hot intense pain once the cast removed, my foot was spotty and pink. A couple days later i went to my gp he said i had invection in the foot. Tendonisous? Stonge Antibiotic's given My work paid for Physio as the hospital took 8 weeks to make an appointment. i did 8 sessions i only had 20% movement. I now have had 8 weeks worth of sessions i can move it better but still in alot pain with mass swelling and discolouration.
I'm wondering if you've pinched off veins and/or lymphatic vessels .... enough swelling CAN do it too. Broken or no, you may need crutches to allow your leg to heal. Please see a physician? Good luck and keep us posted!
no numbness or anything on the back of my leg. While the leg is numb, it still gets itcy and it is very irritating to scratch it. If I stand or walk for too long, the burning sensation comes into play, and I have to sit down, because it also hurts my lower back, makes my back feel like it will break if I don't sit down. This has been going on for 23 years! And not one doctor can tell me what is wrong...
that helps with swelling. Try not to put anything in the cast to itch it, although I know all too well how bad it does itch!Make sure the crutches are adjusted properly, and don't put all the weight on your armpits, lol..that'll hurt! Just be careful and rest the leg and do not put any pressure on it til the doc says you can. I really hope that this isn't going to be a set back for you.
Also, sometimes wrapping it so it's not mobile and I hate to say it but even sometimes a cast. I'm not sure how it's broken so I'd ask the doctor before wrapping it myself. You don't want it healing around the wrapping and it becoming deformed. Did you have x-rays? I've broken my little toe a few times but never got x-rays. I could just tell.
Out of the blue the pain stopped but returned unrelentingly six months later, it has not stopped since. Anyway a few months after the fall I began having periodic swelling in my leg, hip and lower leg. Not really any pain at that time but a few months after, my hip bone began to get larger and my clothes would not fit normally. I went to my internist who gave me an injection which did nothing.
So, next I went to a health food store and bought a natuaral diuretic and I used those tight stockings, both of which did nothing, the swelling continued, actually I think the swelling got worse. This swelling, I might add, just came out of no where. 1st my feet began to hurt real bad, like I had been standing for 3 days or something, but I hadn't, then suddenly they swelled up like balloons.
My horse fell on my right leg, but it didn't seem like anything got hurt too badly. I had some abrasions to my outer ankle and the top of my foot/ankle. Now, my ankle won't bend down as far as the other, and I've been having strange pains in it. When I rotate it or walk on it, I can feel something (I assume it's bones) rubbing against each other. This usually causes a dull pain, but sometimes it REALLY hurts. I haven't been to see a doctor or anything. Please help!!
As I don't know the cause of my pain. Is it the swelling and why is it swelling? Is pain management only a band aid? my leg is in atrophy from non bearing weight and desperate for resolution?
I have a spiral fibula fracture. I could not put my foot in walking position. My lower left leg was casted for the first two weeks and I was no weight bearing. Doctor told me at the end of the two weeks I would get a walking cast. During that time the pain was terrible. I passed out because of the pain. At the two weeks, I visited my doctor and he said looks good see you in four weeks and I was still no weight bearing. No explanation.
The orthopedist is pretty sure he broke his thumb by the growth plate. He is currently in a cast and is to be reevaluated next week to make sure it is broken and not sprained. Assuming that it is broken, what is the healing period for a boy his age? He plays travel team baseball and is a catcher primarily for the team. Should he be expected to be out the entire summer season? Thank you.
I was run over by a car 10 months ago and suffered a broken left fibula in two places and tibula. I was treated for the broken leg and the bones have healed. However, I was never treated or examined for any other possible injuries. Upon getting hit my lower body from the waist down had gone completely numb but feeling returned within a few hours after the accident. I have been suffering from neuropathy in my feet, hands and knees along with phantom muscle and joint pain daily.
