1351968 tn?1278205300 Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but what is the difference between Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia? I've been told by doctors that there are many similarities, and that sometimes Bipolar can even become Schizophrenia over time, if its not treated properly. Is this true?
202665 tn?1248806733 Yes schizophrenia doesnt have any mood changes but there are a whole spectrum of conditions in between such as bipolar with psychotic features and schizoaffective disorder which involve both psychosis and mood changes. Sometimes certain concerns such as psychosis can increase over time become more apparent or are more in need of treatment. Bipolar with psychotic features is generally defined by psychotic thoughts or auditory or other hallucinations occuring only during mood swings..
12268405 tn?1427853361 While you have posted in the Depression forum, you actually might try the Schizophrenia forum, because the hallmark of that disorder is hearing voices. This can create paranoia, depression, and confused thinking. Clozapine and Minocycline (Mino is new) are the very best drugs to take for your condition. The new drug, Minocycline, is originally an antibiotic, but turns out it substantially helps with few side effects the problems of schizophrenia.
Avatar f tn 14 years old is indeed young but it might be psychotic episodes or something somehow leading to bi-polarity as it could be and it is very likely, that is is schizo but at this age who knows if she's just shizotypal or schizoid, well you wanna know if it's a personality disorder or a psychotic disorder. In females real psychotic disorders tend to appear later than in men, who are starting to get symptoms between adolescence and early adulthood.
Avatar n tn Can paranoid personality disorder develop into paranoid schizophrenia?A person from my family went undiagnosed for many years despite strange behavior, only when she had a psychotic episode did she allow us to take her to a doctor and was diagnosed with paranoid disorder. The symptoms fit her "usual" symptoms (i.e. those she's had for years) - relatively coherent delusions of being disliked, plotted against, of her flat being bugged, someone stealing things when she's out.
1256303 tn?1291752568 If you are taking lithium and it is working nine times out of ten you have bipolar not schizophrenia. Look up lithium and schizophrenia online and you will see it does not normally work for schizophrenia patients. I was on lithium I did not feel any better on it and eventually it hit my kidneys and I had to go into the hospital for seventeen days to get the lithium out of my system and have dialysis.
Avatar m tn Actually I have schizhoaffective disorder and that sounds like what you are talking about. Schizoaffective is schizophrenia with a mood disorder, in my case bipolar but as you are describing depression. I would speak to a psychiatrist. Schizoaffective disorder is actually more common than schizophrenia and more easily treated. You could also have depression with psychotic features. I could explain the difference between the two but a psychiatrist could explain it.
Avatar f tn com/health/bipolar-disorder/bipolar-hallucinations Schizophrenia follows a pattern different than bipolar. Are you trying to decide which is going on for your son or does he already have a bipolar diagnosis?
3579868 tn?1348739509 There is also schizoaffective disorder which can have some symptoms simmilar to bipolar disorder. I think it is actually on the schizophrenia spectrum but from my understanding it can be like a cross between bipolar and schizophrenia. I hope this helps maybe you could do a google search for bipolar spectrum, or just bipolar to get some more in depth information.
Avatar m tn Firstly, I want to emphasise that I'm not a psychiatrist, so whatever I say is amateur advice which you shouldn't take like it's a real diagnosis. I think it highly unlikely that it's straight depression, since you're evidently struggling with a lot of psychotic symptoms (delusions and hallucinations), dissociative symptoms (depersonalization and derealization) and anxiety issues on top of your mood problems.
Avatar f tn Yes, it is possible. You can see the guidlines here: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:http://www.*************.com/schizophrenia/c/120/150461/schizophrenia/ If the delusions and whatnot only appear during a mood episode, then it's a mood disorder with psychotic features. To get the schizoaffective marker (schizophrenia + mood disorder), you must be having the schizophrenia symptoms for a certain amount of time while having a normal mood.
Avatar f tn Yes there can be causes of psychosis other than schizophrenia or other psychotic disorders or other factors that would worsen it that are physical. A person at all times should make their psychiatrist aware of any physical disabilities or disorders they have or especially inherited tendencies in the family.
Avatar n tn You could have depression with psychotic features or schizoaffective disorder. I have schizoaffective disorder and the mood disorder aspect is bipolar. I am recovered now with an antipsychotic in Phase II FDA study glycine as I've said on other posts but I know what the experience is like. But there are other forms of schizoaffective disorder that have depression instead of bipolar as the mood phase. And if you have suicidal urges you need to see a psychiatrist right away.
Avatar f tn Aspects of psychosis may also manifest during extreme episodes of depression. They are also present in schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder. These features include delusions (false ideas about what is taking place or who one is) and hallucinations (seeing or hearing things which aren't there). As you can see those suffering from Bipolar I are more likely to suffer a psychotic episode than someone diagnosised with Bipolar II disorder.
1044813 tn?1370494406 Hello all, I would like to request the addition of Seroquel (quetiapine) which is an anti-psychotic to the mood tracker. Seroquel is very commonly prescribed for the treatment of both manic and depressive episodes of bipolar disorder.
719785 tn?1232901518 It should be noted that I have schizoaffective disorder and with the bipolar aspect of schizoaffective disorder when I was put on Anafranil which is similar to Prozac it made me psychotic. The same is true of bipolar. Anyone here would tell you as well as a psychiatrist that anti-depressents especially SSRI's can if given to someone with bipolar make them manic. They need a mood stabilizer.
728313 tn?1260459629 Not only can a person have both MS and a neuropsychiatric disorder (eg. schizophrenia), but MS can occasionally show up with the first symptoms BEING a neuropsychiatric disorder. I believe that later onset schizophrenia is uncommon, but I am not sure. There are case reports of the onset of MS manifesting as the new onset of schizophrenia. MS is a disease of the whole brain INCLUDING the gray matter so it is quite possible to have either and both.
720657 tn?1233011567 There has been a controversy about whether schizoaffective disorder is a type of schizophrenia or a type of mood disorder. Today, most clinicians and researchers agree that it is primarily a form of schizophrenia. Although its exact prevalence is not clear, it may range from two to five in a thousand people (- i.e., 0.2% to 0.5%). Schizoaffective disorder may account for one-fourth or even one-third of all persons with schizophrenia.
728480 tn?1312059930 t up on the exact chemical mechanisms of the brain but the experimental treatment for schizoaffective I am on targets the receptors in an exact manner and the genetic studies of schizophrenia proved this. Of course the psychotic thoughts I had before recovery were about my own particular fears. They all differ. To summarize for effective treatment medication and talk therapy work together to help a person recover.
Avatar f tn Does not occur exclusively during the course of schizophrenia, a bipolar disorder or a depressive disorder with psychotic features, or another psychotic disorder and is not attributable to the physiological effects of another medical condition.
Avatar f tn What kind of an expert is this? Can someone look into this. This in my eyes is a cruel statement to a man with schizophrenia with questions. My Dad has suffered 40 years with schizophrenia, he as I always understood it has a brain disorder? Who is this expert and how can he say this?
569043 tn?1216845586 Abilify is used to treat the symptoms of psychotic conditions such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (manic depression). It is also used together with other medications to treat major depressive disorder in adults. In clinical trials there was no indication that Abilify effects a womans' menstrual cycle. That said, ift does not mean that it cannot effect your cycle, since all medications effect individuals differently.
Avatar m tn Zyprexa (olanzapine) is an atypical antipsychotic medication. Exactly how it works is not known. It is thought to work by changing the actions of certain chemicals in the brain. Zyprexa is used to treat the symptoms of psychotic conditions such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (manic depression) in adults and children who are at least 13 years old. Zyprexa is sometimes used together with other antipsychotic medications or antidepressants.
Avatar m tn Hi Tammy, seroquel (quetiapine) is an atypical antipsychotic and is often prescribed for bipolar disorder to address psychotic symptoms and for it's mood stabilising properties mainly antimanic, although it also has some anti-depressant effects. It is also prescribed for other things such as schizophrenia, schizoaffective, GAD or severe insomnia (because of the sedation, and in smaller doses). It can be sedating at first, but usually this lessens as you get use to it.
