Avatar f tn The way to check for diabetes is with a blood test. A fasting blood sugar could be taken and a normal person would have under 100. A pre-diabetic would have 100 to 125 and a diabetic would have 126 or over. They could also do an OGTT which tests response to a sugary drink over a period of a couple hours (and again, test the blood). But the standard to diagnose diabetes is a blood test that measures A1C which is an average of blood sugars for a period of about 3 months. An A1C under 5.
709686 tn?1277432159 If it is Type 1 Diabetes, you are somehow born with a weak pancreas or abnormal hormone system which causes the lack of insulin production. But about 90% of the diabetes patients are of Type 2 Diabetes which is still remain a myth among the Smart Scientists. Type 2 Diabetes is a diet & lifestyle related illness. Most people put the blame on the Sugar and Carbohydrate for the elevated glucose level in the blood.
Avatar n tn You may try low carb eating, which is very helpful for blood sugar management. Type 1 grit is a group with great support and information on low carb eating for diabetes management. Look also into Dr. Richard Bernstein's Diabetes SOlutions book and Diabetes University (Utube), which has great and useful series of lectures on managing blood sugars. A CGM (continuous glucose monitoring device) can also be very useful, though frequent finger prick testing is also ok.
Avatar f tn This would involve evaluation of c-peptide, antibodies, and insulin levels correlated with blood sugar levels. Type 1 is lack of insulin (and needs injected insulin), Type 2 is plenty of insulin, but there is insulin resistance and the insulin is not effective. For Type 2, oral meds may be appropriate. If it is adult onset type 1, it may develop quickly. Therefore, I suggest your read up on syptoms of both type 1 and type 2 and if you develop symptoms then you must go to your Dr.
Avatar f tn To correct his low blood sugar we gave him 1 serving of gummy bears (15 g carbs) and waited 15 min then gave 1 more serving of gummy bears. And then tested him 2 hours later. When we tested him he was at 181. Isn’t that a bit high for waiting 2 hours and all he had was 30 grams of carbs? We brought him in today for a fasting glucose and an a1c so I guess we will see what those say. I’m just so worried about him and feel like his pediatrician doesn’t care about our conserns.
Avatar n tn Congratulations!!! I too am a type 1 diabetic and my son just turned 1 last month. I had a pretty healthy pregnancy but it was very hard work. As the person above told you call your doc immediately and ask for a Rx for prenatal vitamins. Also, one of the most important nutrients for your baby is folic acid or folate. This is especially important for diabetics!!! The best sources are spinach (I know yuck...
Avatar m tn https://www.webmd.com/diabetes/guide/how-test-blood-glucose#1 Here is some information also about normal sugar levels. 112 is higher than what it should be so please consult your doctor if this continues. http://diabetes.org/living-with-diabetes/treatment-and-care/blood-glucose-control/checking-your-blood-glucose.html And here is a really helpful slide show about stopping diabetes before it starts in terms of prevention. https://www.medhelp.
Avatar m tn - C-peptide and Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS) - if c-peptide is low and FBS is high would indicate possible lack of insulin production. Further testing for antibodies should be done (to determine type 1 or 2 diabetes). - if c-peptide is high and FBS is high would tend to indicate type 2 diabetes.
Avatar n tn I know I am insulin dependent because I cannot take my pump off except for the rare few minutes or so without my sugar sky rocketing. Now would u still call this Type 2 Diabetes or Type 1? Hearing the words Juvenile Diabetes associated with Type 1 throws me off obviously because I was not diagnosed as a juvenile. But also the words Insulin Dependent are associated with the Type 1. So I DO fit into that category.
Avatar f tn I recently was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, will I ever be able to eat whatever I want again? If so, how long do you think that will be, I miss my chocolate!!
Avatar m tn it is good you went to the dr when you did. You may wish to ask your Dr if he will test you for type 1 diabetes, which you may possibly have given your age and how high your sugars were. If it is type 1 diabetes, you will need to continue taking insulin rather than oral meds. Please learn as much as you can about diabetes. It is managed through diet, exercise and medications (insulin and/or oral).
325405 tn?1262290178 I also know that gestational diabetes is more strict with blood sugar levels than regular type II diabetes. Now that I have type II, what are the ranges to aim for for blood sugar levels for fasting and then for 2 hours after a meal? Right now, I'm testing about 100 to 110 in the morning and about 110 to 130 after meals. If I forget to take my metformin at night, my fasting level is usually around 120 to 130. But, with the medicine it is 100 to 110 fasting. Is this good?
390388 tn?1279636213 t realize how important that is but if you start reading labels you will be shocked at how much refined flours and sugar is in EVERYTHING. No wonder type 2 diabetes is an epidemic! Sugar has many other names on labels that people don't recognize. Anyway, watching your diet is crucial because at this point with extra insulin being produced by your pancreas anything you eat (with the help of the medication) the insulin will store it for energy which makes it really easy to put on weight.
Avatar f tn Chances are he will prove to be Type 1 diabetic. 269 is way too high 2-1/2 hours after eating. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease - different than adult-onset type 2 diabetes. As the doctor said, keep track of his blood sugar for a few days and call in the results. And they will tell you what to do from there. Maybe ask the doctor about the connection between gluten (found in wheat, barley, rye and possibly oats), cow's milk products and type 1 diabetes.
1058898 tn?1275675151 I have not been told if i have diabetes but my Dr. told me to watch my blood sugar because im having symptoms of hypo. Avatar f tn My daughter was diagnosised with Type 1 Diabetes Aug 2008. We have learned how to inject insulin and check her blood sugar numbers. We keep her on a pretty strick diet to ensure that we keep her Blood Sugar Numbers between 80-180. The past two days she has been very low. We have tried to make sure that the insulin that we give her is only enough to cover the food that she has eaten. However, just today, she woke up with her blood sugar #s at 64. She ate about 32 carbs for breakfast.
Avatar n tn Drugs and insulin do not mix you can get abnormal blood glucose readings. I know after type 1 for 30 years. Seizures are actually a good response to low blood sugar in sleep state they can save your life. Another thing don't ever trust the emt blood sugar testing equipment it is the worst I've ever seen in most cases. Watch her close and check her blood glucose mid sleep around 1:30 2:00 this is when most problems occur. Just to get a grip on what is goin on.
647391 tn?1275016633 It's your call. For myself, I would not undertake the chore of daily blood sugar testing until I was diagnosed by a medical doctor as diabetic. While the blood testing is important to the diagnosis, it is not the only factor. From "endocrineweb.com"... "Doctors also take into account your physical exam, presence or absence of symptoms, and medical history" in making a diagnosis.
Avatar f tn Hello, we cannot be sure if your Mum is type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Type 1 can occur at any age. There is testing that can be done to determine the type of diabetes. This includes antibody testing, and testing for insulin levels. Target blood sugars to be normal should be about 4.4 - 7.8, ideally. Is your mum able to control her carb intake, to also help control her blood sugars? Reducing amounts of carbs eaten can have big impact on blood sugars.
Avatar n tn I have a friend whose husband has type-1 diabetes. He is in his early thirties and had a job for 3 years in which he had to drive around town. His blood sugar dropped one day when he was off work and he had an accident and lost his drivers license.
Avatar m tn One can typically prevent type 2 diabetes by lifestyle choices of proper weight, exercise and eating habits. This is considered non insulin diabetes. With type 2 diabetes, blood sugar is too high. The body doesn't make insulin well anymore or use it well. It's usually slow developing and can be reversed. I hope this answers your question.
