Avatar f tn I'm not sure what the doctor was talking about saying that normal blood glucose was 300 per dL. "For someone without diabetes, a fasting blood sugar on awakening should be under 100 mg/dl. Before-meal normal sugars are 70–99 mg/dl. “Postprandial” sugars taken two hours after meals should be less than 140 mg/dl" Anyone I've ever known with a blood sugar level of 300 needed to be put on insulin to bring it down...
Avatar f tn The A1c test is used primarily to monitor the glucose control of diabetics over time. Depending on the type of diabetes that you have, how well your diabetes is controlled, and your doctor, your A1c may be measured 2 to 4 times each year. A 1% change in an A1c result reflects a change of about 30 mg/dL in average blood glucose. For instance, an A1c of 6% corresponds to an average glucose of 135 mg/dL, while an A1c of 9% corresponds to an average glucose of 240 mg/dL.
Avatar f tn Hi, Is this 140 a fasting level? If it is a fasting level it is not normal. Normal fasting should be lower than 95, and ideally even in the 80s. Are you overweight or any other health issues? Family history of diabetes? I would strongly recommend that you visit your doctor and tell him or her your results. They should do some further investigation. Hba1c and glucose testing. If you have a home glucose meter, please do some more testing.
Avatar f tn I had to go to the emergency room again last month and again, they did blood work. My glucose level was only 88. I am just wondering if I should be looking into this. Could I be diabetic? They never said anything about the high level. I found out when I went to pick up my medical records from the hospital. Also, both visits were in the morning so I hadn't eaten anything since the night before. Thanks for any help you can give me.
Avatar f tn How much does the prednisone raise or lower the glucose level? Sometimes I feel lightheaded and my glucose reading is low, like around 65, and sometimes I am shaky and the reading is high, around 215. How do I know where my "normal" is and when I should be concerned? Diabetes runs in my family - my brother and mother have it. I am so confused and can not get a straight answer from my doctors. Help me to understand this please.
Avatar n tn Hi, if your a1c is 11.2 this means that your average blood sugars are over 300. This is terrible for your health and you are at risk for very serious complications along with stroke, heart attack, among others, in the very near future. Blindness, kidney failure, and wounds that won't heal are also high risk given your current levels. With your blood sugars this high you need to be taking insulin.
Avatar n tn My glucose level has been over 400 for more than a week. How serious is this. My doctor does not seem overly concerned made appointment for a week from now.
Avatar f tn All of a sudden this week my blood sugar spiked VERY high - My father passed away this week and I found out I have a blockage in my carotid artery which will require surgery. My blood sugar hit 300 and I have NEVER had it that high. My doctor has upped the dosage of my meds, but I can't explain the hike. The increase in dosage has helped, but it is still quite high for me. Can stress cause hikes like this???? I am hardly eating because of my fear of causing it to go higher.

Avatar n tn 20 years but for the last 6 months his levels have climbed to 260- over 300 some days. He is visiting the VA hospital and they seemed to think that this could be controled by more carbs in his diet. Finally this week with levels over 300 he fell, and has no strenght at all to walk, or even use his arms. This of course is a very frighting thing for him and I have tried to encourage him by telling his that I feel that this is ALL related to his high levels.
Avatar m tn So what I am confused about is...why did my glucose level continue to rise over 3 hours instead of peak and drop down like most people do? And why would I get more sick after eating than I would having a 100 mg dose of glucose on an empty stomach? My doctor is out of town for another 2 1/2 weeks and the nurse had really no advice for me other than sometimes your body produces a large amount of insulin after you eat which can cause this feeling.
Avatar n tn s important and should be your everyday guideline - Eat well balanced meals in the correct amounts, along with moderate exercise (like walking) and weight control, you can keep your blood glucose level as close to normal (non-diabetes level) as possible. Small meals throughout the day are better than three huge meals. Your body will better handle the smaller amounts. Foods: Stay away from foods containing sugar and bad carbs. Google bad carbs for a list no-no foods.
Avatar m tn You may need to do further blood test to assess the health of your thyroid, liver and also check up your glucose level. A check on estrogen level both total and free may be also required to know if the reduction in free T is due to high estrogen level. By the way, I am eager to know what your doctor has commented, since only he knows more about your health status after physical examination.
Avatar n tn There is glucose stored in liver and muscles and blood transfers the glucose. When you do strenuous exercise all the glucose in muscles is depleted and due to the craving Liver starts metabolism of converting your stores into Glucose for energy. If your muscles are deprived for long you get this lactic acidosis or muscle cramps. So for getting continuous energy you have to tone your body.
Avatar n tn "1 unit for every 50mg/dl over 100 mg/dl. Problem being I am always 100 + - before meals and don't need insulin." Is the former your scale? If yes, why do you say "don't need insulin"? "I been waiting 2 hrs and using it to get from my normal 250 - 300 (After meals) down to an acceptable level.<140." Levels of 250-300 anytime are dangerous.
Avatar n tn com, “Elevated blood glucose levels increase the loss of magnesium in the urine, which in turn lowers blood levels of magnesium.” So getting enough magnesium is especially important in diabetes. In spite of these benefits, medical authorities rarely recommend magnesium. That’s why I call it the forgotten mineral.
Avatar f tn My question about Hgba1c is what is the blood glucose level at which glycation occurs? Is it anything over 100? 120?
Avatar f tn If you are having the one hour glucose test the normal after the drink is 140 and under The 3 hour test should be 180 and under after the 3 hours and if you want to know what your everyday fasting blood sugar level is 90 and under.
Avatar n tn The A1c is the current gold standard in identifying glucose levels by measuring your glucose over the past 2-3 months. Why go back 2-3 months? Excess glucose binds to the outside of new red blood cells [rbc] never getting absorbed or burnt off for energy. RBC's live on average 2-3 months, the A1c captures this. No fasting is required. Normal is <5%.
Avatar f tn I have a fasting blood glucose level of 101 and 102 for several years now and have been taking diovan hct and excedrin. I know these drugs have the ability to raise blood sugar readings. Should I be concerned about these readings? If I get off these drugs will my levels return to normal?
Avatar n tn i dont think you have diabetes if your sugar returns to normal after a few hours...
Avatar n tn re still ingesting more food which may allow your body to retain an elevated blood glucose level. So it makes more sense to me to measure the blood glucose level two hours after the meal has finished, especially when some meals consist of multiple courses, and the entire meal can last up to an hour. Your thoughts on this?
