Common Questions and Answers about Blood cholesterol screening

Avatar f tn Hi, I am new to this forum and have a question. I see my Primary Care Doctor once a year for an Annual Exam. She usually doesn't need to do Lab work on me because I see a Rheumatologist every three months, and he always has my blood checked for the meds I take for rheumatoid arthritis. The last two years I have asked my PCP if I could have a fasting glucose screening, and she said I don't need one.
Avatar m tn Hi I am a male 40 years old, 6'0 275lbs being treated for high blood pressure and cholesterol. I do not smoke and I exercise moderately 4 times a week. Besides the exercise, I have a desk job 5 days a week getting little other exercise. Someone suggested that I consider inner imaging screening (EBT Hart scan). I am on Lipitor and Vytorin, I was taken off of Benicar two months ago because of the back pain and an elevated CPK 200's.

Tbd It is very important for everyone to get regular physicals to stay on top of their health and cholesterol screening is often a part of that. One of the trickiest things about monitoring cholesterol is that high cholesterol has no symptoms. You will only know that is high if you have blood drawn and a doctor tells you. But it is essential to keep cholesterol under control to prevent things like heart attack and stroke.

5461254 tn?1368376816 came through our town and I had a little screening done. My total cholesterol was 224. They do not do the break down. I was also not fasting. THis morning I went and had a screening done and have the totals for all and would like some feedback, please. Total cholesterol: 192 LDL: 112 HDL: 47 Triglycerides 166 TC/HDL ratio: 4.1 I know just from the little bit that I have googled that the hdl/tc ratio is important, along with the hdl/triglycerides ratio.

Avatar f tn A lipid profile, which includes values for total cholesterol, as well as individual values for LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides, another lipid in the blood, requires you to fast. LDL levels cannot be measured from the blood directly. Instead, a mathematical equation called the Friedewald equation, is used to calculate LDL levels using values for total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides.

432888 tn?1204072551 I am 35, female, 5'10 and 183 pounds, non-smoker. I got a free health screening (finger ***** method) last week and was devastated by my results: TC: 247 HDL: 17 and LDL: 198. Only two years ago my results were: TC 217 HDL: 41 LDL: 152. What is going on? I admit I am not a healthy eater, lots of sweet and saturated fat, not enough exercise. Could this do it? I immediately put myself on a cholesterol lowering diet this week, as I am scared to death. I don't want to go on statins.
Avatar n tn I mean, if the screening test the blood bank did came back positive for HIV, then you would be notified....and NO, again.....you don't receive any kind of notification if your tests do not reveal any infections. really worried...Your blood is not tested for cholesterol when donating blood....just for blood borne infections.
Avatar m tn Hi all, recently went for a general blood screening. everything is normal except for choloresterol and liver function was shocked that my cholesterol was high Total choloresterol 259 mg/dl range is (140-200) Total HDL ratio 5.2 range is < 4.
Avatar n tn If your kids have an increased risk for high cholesterol (i.e. obesity) it would be reasonable to measure the cholesterol, to define how aggressive has to be the intervention. Good luck.
Avatar n tn I have high cholesterol, high blood pressure and my mother died from a stroke at the age of 55 from plaque in her arteries. It seems like a great deal. Can my doctor order the same tests?
Avatar f tn You should have your primary care doctor do some initial screening including blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes test. You should find a doctor you trust and follow closely with them. Best of luck.
Avatar f tn I recently received my blood test results from my cholesterol screening and I'm not sure of the meaning of my ratio. which is 2.8. My HDL is 72, LDL is 114, Triglucerides are 96. I swim daily, but I do have MS and about 28 years ago was told I have Mitral Valve Prolapse, which I don't take anything for and also have no symptoms. Can you tell ,me if my ratio is good or not. Thank you.

Avatar f tn Despite controling my diet and doing karate 3 hrs per week I have high cholesterol (287) and high triclyceride (250). I am at a lost and don't know how best to control it. At these levels I feel dizzy and lethargic. Please advise.
Avatar f tn For example, a 58-year-old woman at risk of heart disease could save at least $300 out of her own budget on recommended tests, ranging from diabetes and cholesterol screening, to a mammogram and a flu shot. Research has shown that people tend to skip recommended preventive care if cost is an issue, and even a modest copayment can make a difference. Cost-free prevention was one idea that received widespread support during the contentious health care debate last year in Congress.
