Avatar n tn In 1999 I had a L-3 to S-1 spinal fusion with metal cages inserted. In 2006 I began to have severe back pain radiating to my left leg. On June 25, 2008 I had another fusion this time from L-1 to S-1. Two of the cages that had been placed in 1999 had not fused and were replaced. I also had titanium plates inserted. Immediately after surgery I had severe right foot pain that has progressively gotten worse. I have had several nerve blocks with no relief.
Avatar m tn I have also been diagnosed with idiopathic anemia (RBC = 3.99 10*12/L, Hemoglobin = 118 g/L, Hematocrit = 0.35 L/L, Ferritin = 85 ug/L). I have developed melasma on my forehead which my dermatologist said could be related (pregnant women often get melasma). I also have atypical patterns of hair loss/thinning though there is no real baldness in my family.

Avatar f tn hi is anyone out there that has had lumbar fusion L3 L4 L5 S1 facet jointsremoved, compression at L5 stenosis, spures. I had the surger may 24 th 2007. Well its jan and i am still in pain i am on over 200 mg pain killers. At L5 S1 its like the hardware is digging in. Has anyone had the problems. Also how about mental problems with it???????????????
Avatar f tn I had a arthrodesis 360 anterior/posterior lumbar two level fusion l-5 S-1 and the level above with screws, rods and two cages. When they do a hardware removal, do they also remove the cages? Cages were inserted during posterior surgery (two cages). The hardware removal will be posterior removal only. I was just found to have a metal allergy, and would like to know if the cages will also be removed, or is it possible during hardware removal going in posterior?
Avatar f tn A friend had a cervical fusion from a injury a year ago. Three spinal surgeries within 12 days (2010). He is now in a coma. They reopen area and find that area is still swollen ,they injected medication on friday. They can't do mri do to metal used. My question is how long before swelling is down and what another test can be done to see if brain is damaged. He is breathing on his own.
Avatar m tn For any of you who have titanium plates (I imagine all who have had fusion!), please take note if you begin to have any type of autoimmune syptoms - increasing joint pain, fatigue, digestive issues - along with depression, brain fog, migraines, etc. My husband had fusion 9 years ago and has been suffering with a multitude of health issues ever since. We finally had his blood tested through MELISA labs and he is sensitive to titanium. He realizes that he has been slowly poisoned by the metal.
Avatar f tn The hardware is normally made from either stainless steel or more likely titanium. Nither is a "ferrious" metal. Only Ferrious metal reacts to magnetic fields. No way an MRI Pulls on hardware that is used in your body. If it did, it would rust!!!!....LOL. It's amazing what our head will do to us when we are in that tube.....................

Avatar n tn I had C6-7 fusion May 08. I am back to office work and am experiencing severe neck and R arm pain in the past month. My pain was mainly L sided prior to surgery. I was told also that C5 was bulging but I had no symptoms pre- surgery. Doctors feel that it is nerve related due to surgery and may improve. This is getting progressively worse and I am in a great deal of pain. The pain I have in the neck is actually at the base of my spine on the 'hump' below the fusion site.
Avatar n tn The instrumentation following cervical fusion could lead to neurological deficit due to metal plates and fibrosis leading to nerve impingement. This is the main cause for pain in left arm and hand. Consult your neurosurgeon for a recent MRI spine for any fresh changes. Physiotherapy, non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs and lastly a re look surgery are the options available. Take care.
Avatar n tn There may be a relationship to cervical vs lumbar fusion, but I think the recovery time is different. It actually depends on the extent of the surgery being done. When you get more information regarding the procedure they are contemplating, post with an update and we will give you as much support and assistance as possible.
Avatar f tn on day 2 of hydro withdraws shaking and aniety what will help ease these this taking nyquil recoving from spinl fusion 17 days after surgery someone please offer your advice
Avatar n tn I had cervical fusion with a cadaver bone implant to replaced a slipped disc C5 and a metal plate ten days ago and I'm actually feeling pretty good; the numbness on my thumb is almost gone and the pain and discomfort I had going down my left arm has stopped.
Avatar f tn I am a 43 year old female and have post traumatic osteoarthritis in my left ankle due to a bad injury many years ago and following an arthoscopy I have been recommended to have ankle fusion. Is there anyone out there who can give me any information about ankle fusion? It sounds a bit drastic but on the other hand the pain is getting worse and it seems to be having a knock on effect on my knees now. I have twin toddlers so the idea of the operation/recovery seems very daunting.
Avatar m tn And according to studies done, the MELISA Test is reproducible, sensitive, specific, and reliable for detecting metal sensitivity in metal-sensitive patients. So, consult your doctor and have the test done. Regards.
Avatar f tn They realized that I was allergic to the metal, and found out the the reason I was in so much pain after my fusion was because I was reacting to the metal in the fusion. They advised to remove the hardware from my spine. I was concerned because I was told I did not have a solid fusion, the Neurosurgeon said I did,and proceeded to remove the metal from my fusion site. I found out a few months ago that I did NOT have a solid fusion when he removed the metal.
Avatar m tn I can understand your anxiety and concerns. You have undergone 2 discectomies and a fusion. Fusion is done since the space between the bony vertebrae is empty after the disc removal. This is filled with a bone graft and often immobilized with metal plates and screws and bone graft joins the vertebrae above and below to form one solid piece with the new bone growth. This can limit the range of motion if more than one level is operated on.
Avatar n tn i had a 3level fusion l-2 thru l-5 in april 06' and hardware removal and a l-5 & s-1 fusion in sept07' because after the first fusion in 06' i got sacrum pains bad and in the left leg. i found a nerve block dr. before doing them he ordered a ct milogram. dr called me said i did need the sacral joint injection, but ct also showed all 4 level fusions failed. my ? is next now what ? have it refused or just leave it. and if i do will it cause me problems in the future?
Avatar m tn I was 30 and 31 when I had to have 3 surgeries to fix 2 levels of my lower spine. L4-L5 and L-5-S1. Ultimately they were fused and had metal rods put in as well. I was never told to quit smoking. However like I said I have seen it go both ways so if your doctor recommends it I would listen.
Avatar f tn I am hoping to hear feedback from others who have had partial laminectomies (herniated disc shaved). I have a posteriorly herniated L-4/5 with a partial rupture. My L-3/4 has mild deterioration. The pain from it varies, much worse (requiring narcotics for pain control) when aggravated. The dull ache is always there and I have a persistent numb strip down the outside of my right leg because of the injury causing pressure on the nerve root.
Avatar n tn I am 34 and just had a spinal fusion to L4-L5 in June. First of all I was wondering how long the screws would continue to bother me. They are so uncomfortable I do not even sit back against a chair most of the time. As well, I was wondering if anyone knows about spinal fusions and future pregnancy.
Avatar f tn I had a C1 C2 fusion in 1997... have been told I can not have an MRI because of metal in my neck. I now want to use magnets to help alleviate shoulder impingement and muscle tension in upper back. ( I have experienced tremendous relieve from carpel tunnel pain by wearing magnetic bracelet). I am nervous about wearing a magnet on my shoulder - or on upper back - due to metal in my neck. Any suggestions?
