Avatar m tn The treatment requires close medical supervision by a dermatologist because the drug has many known side effects (many of which can be severe). About 25% of patients may relapse after one treatment. In those cases, a second treatment for another 4-6 months may be indicated to obtain desired results.
Avatar n tn I have severe cysitc acne that covers my upper back. I went to a dermatologist for this condition beginning at age 12. During the course of treatment I was perscribed Minocycline, Doxycycline, tetracycline, and sulfa based medications, all resulting in allergic reactions. I was finally placed on Accutane with positive results while taking the drug, however six months after completing treatment, the acne returned again.
Avatar n tn Acne is a common condition that affects most people and some people develop severe acne that leads to permanent and sometimes disfiguring scarring. The term "scarring" refers to a process where collagen within the skin is damaged from inflammation, leading to permanent texture changes in the skin. Treatment of scarring may vary depending on the kind of scarring present. This can be assessed by a dermatologist.
Avatar f tn I have dermatomyosistis and have been in remission for 11 years. I also have very oily skin and cystic acne. I was taking antibiotics for 7 years but I started having stomach problems and had to stop taking them, and am currently taking spironolactone but it is not entirely effective and I'm not comfortable with all of the risks. My dermatologist suggested PDT acne treatment and told me that it would not bring me out of remission, but I'd like as much input as I can get.
Avatar f tn isotretinoin also known as Accutane, can be prescribed by a doctor, or contraceptive pills with cyproterone for females with virilization or drospirenone. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acne_vulgaris#Treatments Let us know about how you are doing and what your doctor advises. Post us if you need any further information. Regards.
Avatar n tn There is no miracle cure for acne. Cortisone shots reduce inflammation and allergic symptoms but can actually induce acne. The drug considered the "gold standard" treatment for acne is Accutane (oral Isotretinoin). This is a power drug for people with severe acne which has not responded to standard treatments.
Avatar m tn ve suffered from severe sweating since the onset of puberty and also had severe acne as a teenager. For acne, I was prescribe 6 months of accutane - which did wonders for my facial/body acne. However, in the last couple of years I have struggled with controlling back acne. For sweating, when I was 20 I received botox injections in my forhead and armpits - which worked well. Not amazingly, but helped for sure. I had been getting injections every 6 months.

Avatar f tn I finally decided that my acne was troublesome enough to see a dermatologist. It isn't just the acne, but mainly the resulting scars that made me decide to seek the help of a professional. I get keloids on most of my body, but not on my face. I do have abnormal/excessive scarring on my face, but I wouldn't compare it to the keloids on my body. The facial scars are generally quite flat, but brightly pigmented (the color of inflamed acne, unfortunately).
Avatar f tn It is believed that isotretinoin works primarily by reducing the secretion of oils from the glands, however some studies suggest that it affects other acne-related factors as well. Isotretinoin has been shown to be very effective in treating severe acne and can either improve or clear well over 80% of patients. The drug has a much longer effect than anti-bacterial treatments and will often cure acne for good.
Avatar m tn Hello, It can be due to cystic acne. Cystic acne is the most severe form of acne. Cystic acne affects deeper skin tissue than the more superficial inflammation from common acne. Since they are severe, so systemic medications are usually required. The treatment consists of topical and oral antibiotics, tretinoin, oral contraceptives in females and Intralesional corticosteroid injections. Very severe cases may need excision and drainage.
