Common Questions and Answers about Bacterial pneumonia symptoms treatment

pneumonia

Avatar n tn If you have a virus that resulted in pneumonia, while allopathic medicine has little in the way of anti-virals, there are plants that have anti-viral properties. Olive leaf and elderberry are two examples. Herb Pharm makes a tincture that helps with virus control. That being said, though, and assuming this is viral in nature, once you have pneumonia you have progressed significantly through the viral process already and the more important thing is clearing the lungs.
Avatar m tn Influenza viruses can cause a common cold or flu, leading a healthy individual to take a few days or a week off work. However, the flu can exacerbate existing health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease, and inflammatory disorders, leading to severe complications for individuals over 65 with a weakened immune system.
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed with bacterial pneumonia in the right lower lobe about four weeks ago. I had antibiotic treatment and an inhaler for ten days. I had another chest x-ray after the antibiotic treatment and my doctor said that my lung was looking much improved. The coughing has ended, but I still have not returned to my normal energy level. Also, when I wake in the morning, I usually have a feeling of discomfort in the right upper quadrant of my body.....just a vague aching.
Avatar n tn Bacterial or viral lung infection can precipitate asthma with wheezing in a person genetically predisposed to asthma. Treatment of the presumed asthma, aside from treatment of the infectious pneumonia, is appropriate. So, this could be asthma, superimposed on pneumonia. Your son could have whooping cough, despite immunization against it. If his fever and sweating with clammy skin has subsided, it is probably a sign that the antibiotic therapy has been effective and the pneumonia is clearing.
Avatar f tn Thank you I was going to ask how old she is , there is bacterial and viral pneumonia. In viral symptoms appear gradually and are less severe in bacterial they get sick fairly quickly and have a high fever and rapid breathing. With treatment bacterial is cured in 1-2 weeks..viral will last longer. There are vaccines now .
Avatar m tn You may also have a secondary bacterial infection which is a very common occurrence or Bacterial Pneumonia. Your Doctors office is probably closed for the weekend. Do you have a walk in clinic or something similar near by? It would be wise to try another round of antibiotics. Ciprofloxicin or Azithromycin both seem to work well when others won't. You should also ask for some cough medication if you are not coughing up anything, preferably with codeine.
Avatar n tn Would carinii pneumonia present itself with just a minor cough and congestion and no fever, no rash or other symptoms. In other words is this type of pneumonia something that is more severe? I have not had an exposure to someone with HIV, but I have allowed myself to receive oral sex on occasion from guys that I did not know their HIV status.
Avatar f tn Anyway, there are different reasons we get pneumonia. People think of bacterial or viral. We can also have chemical or traumatic. And pneumonia is not like bronchitis. So, symptoms are not always as predictable. It can take a while to get over. If you still have your symptoms on day 5 on antibiotics, I would call your doctor. The thing with antibiotics is that different ones treat different pathogens. What pathogen caused your pneumonia if it is bacterial?
Avatar n tn They can treat you with antibiotics if you have the secondary bacterial pneumonia but if it is Mycoplasma or Chlamydia they may or may not. I have had both Mycoplasma and Chlamdia pneumnia at the same time after getting the flu. You may just still have the viral pneumonia. You should revisit your doctor to be safe. If you have any other questions feel free.
242516 tn?1368223905 m sure you have a friend who has the sniffles, fever, chills, aches and pains of a viral upper respiratory infection. This is different from a bacterial infection such as sinusitis, bronchitis, or pneumonia. A viral infection doesn't improve with antibiotics as these infections do. A virus hijacks your own body's healthy cells and uses it to reproduce and spread. A bacteria is its own living cell and multiplies and spreads on its own and is easier to destroy in that process.
1618318 tn?1318196283 I have swallowing disorders that put me at risk for aspiration pneumonia. Are there any tests that can be done to differentiate the type of pneumonia? I have had several xrays done on my chest and was put on antibiotics.
Avatar n tn Most pneumonia is infectious, and is most times caused by strep bacteria, so they throw antibiotics at it, and see how the patient responds, there are more aggressive atypical bacterial pneumonia that may require more aggressive treatment, also a persons age, and strength of their immune system is a major factor as well. But there are also viral, fungal, or less commonly parasitic causes of pneumonia. None of which is affected at all by antibiotics, each has it's own unique treatment.
Avatar f tn Yellow drainage means bacterial infection, especially accompanied by fever. Call your doctor and have them do a culture. It will tell them which antibiotic the bacteria is sensitive to.
Avatar n tn 1) that the pneumonia is caused by an uncommon bacterium or a non-bacterial infectious agent, one only partially susceptible to the antibiotics your son has received; 2) that the infection resides elsewhere in the body, such as an abscess in the heart or even in the lungs, and is recurrently ‘seeding’ bacteria to the lungs; and 3) that the pneumonia is a non-infectious process, which is much less likely.
620048 tn?1358018235 that is recommended for treatment of pneumonia. The steroid is probably more for your COPD then the pneumonia itself as your breathing is probably worse. In hospital they would have started you on IV steroids and then tapered you to the oral dose. most people stay in the hospital only a few days with moderate pneumonia. With the added respiratory problems maybe you would have stayed in another day or two. Depending on your respiratory status prior to the pneumonia could be 2-4 weeks.
1225178 tn?1318980604 Just got a pneumonia shot. It was the worse day on treatment and it had nothing to do with treatment. Otherwise what CoStudy said.
Avatar n tn no, severe lung infections such as pneumonia or acute (bacterial) bronchitis can take many weeks to heal up from. Just watch out for relapses in symptoms of infections, such as fever and increasing shortness of breath.
250701 tn?1320974765 Sorry haven't been around, I have been sick for two weeks now. Went to the Dr. they gave me antibiotics, but they failed to take an xray. Come to find out Monday they took an xray and I have pneumonia. I have been home all week. Now I get to take my shot tonight and I hope it don't wipe out my immune system to bad. Dr. had to put my ribo back down to 400 until I get well. Well I'll let you know what happens tomorrow.
Avatar f tn I went to the Dr. both times. They did a blood test and said it is bacterial mychoplasma walking pneumonia. Both times an antibiotic was prescribed. It was just really hard to shake four months ago and I'm afraid that this time it's going to be hard to shake again. Just wanted to make sure I am doing everything right. Not a smoker. Don't have asthma, nothing like that.
Avatar f tn ER visit did reveal Bacterial Pneumonia in lower right lung treated with two hours of IV antibiotics and 4 days of Zythromax (sputum tested). Right chest pain subsided during IV treatment and fever came down too. (My apologies for not mentioning that in the previous post).
Avatar m tn On the other hand we are not protected and in fact are even more prone to bacterial infections. Chest infections, pneumonias can have a bacterial cause so those are the ones to watch for.
Avatar m tn Upon getting the formal results of the X-ray however, i was then diagnosed with Bi-basal Pneumonia in the results with hazy reticular densities at both lungs. Upon consulting a Pulmonologist I was told that my lungs sounded fine. however upon looking at my X-ray he gave me a prescription of Co-amoxiclav and Tranexamic acid and told me to go for a week of treatment for possible pneumonia.
