Azithromycin for gonorrhea and chlamydia

Common Questions and Answers about Azithromycin for gonorrhea and chlamydia

zithromax

Avatar n tn Yeah along with a 7 to 10 day course of Doxy for Chlamydia.
Avatar n tn efficacy of the 2 gram single dose of azithromycin? Is this still an effective regiment for gonorrhea and / or chlamydia, NGU, etc.? Are there particular cases or reasons for the patients where this treatment has started to fail? Thank you.
Avatar n tn Dicloxacillin is a poor choice for any STD. It has no effect against chlamydia or the other bacteria that cause cervicitis in women and NGU in men, and borderline efficacy at best against gonorrhea and syphilis. The alternative to doxycycline is azithromycin 1.0 g orally in a single dose, which is safe and effective in pregnancy. If gonorrhea is a concern, then it's azithromycin plus a cephalosporin antibiotic, such cefixime or cefpodoxime; or a 2.0 g dose of azithromycin.
Avatar m tn Greetings Doctor, I am a male in my late 20s. One week ago I received unprotected oral sex from a female friend. Three days later I developed a constant burning sensation in my urethra and experienced painful burning while urinating. I immediately went to my local planned parenthood to seek testing for Gonorrhea and Chlamydia. Because the clinician said I was "symptomatic", I was prescribed a 1g course of Azithromycin to treat what she suggested as a probable Chlamydia infection.
Avatar f tn I am goingt o wait on his results to know rule it out for sure. I have already taken then 1g Azithromycin for chlamydia, I was hoping not to have to take it again as I was rather ill from it.
Avatar m tn It is now ~1 week later and I have no symptoms. ~4 days later I got tested for chlamydia/gonorrhea. The test came back negative. At the time I also asked the doctor if I should take azithromycin just to be extra sure but the doctor was hesitant to prescribe anything without symptoms and without a positive test. So my questions are as follows: 1) Is ~4 days enough time for a chlamydia/gonorrhea test? 2) Should I get tested again just to be sure?
Avatar f tn I went to get checked and the doctor prescribed 1g of azithromycin. That dosage should be enough for chlamydia, but after research, it seems like i might have gonorrhea since it was only oral. Chlamydia seems rare to be transmitted through oral. I also saw on this site that another user was prescribed cipro 500mg and 1g azithromycin. Dr. Hhhhhh said that should be sufficient. I had extra cipro I my house, so i took 500mg along with the azithromycin.
Avatar f tn It's currently 10 days since I took 1 gram of Azithromycin for what seemed like Chlamydia. My lab results aren't in yet but I was prescribed and took Azithromycin the same day I went to the clinic for the testing. The symptoms I had at the time were painful urination and the tip of the penis was red/swollen. Later on the same day I took Azithromycin I started noticing cloudy/clear discharge (stained yellow) for the first time and this lasted for about 3 or 4 days.
Avatar n tn Even in the off chance that you were infected, the amount of azithromycin you took 2.5g) is more than what is recommended for therapy for chlamydia, NGU and gonorrhea (2.0 grams is recommended for gonorrhea although it is usual to take it at one time rather than over several days). Nonetheless, it would have been expected to have cured any penile infection which might have been present. Hope this comment helps.
Avatar m tn If that is indeed the case, then it would seem that the recommended treatment from CDC for gonorrhea (a single shot of ceftriaxone with a single dose of azithromycin) actually would take care of gonorrhea, chlamydia AND syphilis?
Avatar n tn I presume your urine or a swab from your penis was the specimen tested for chlamydia. If your urine or swab test was positive for chlamydia it would be quite unusual for the same specimen to have not been tested for gonorrhea at the same time. Thus one of the first things I would suggest is for you to call your doctor’s office and see if perhaps you were tested for gonorrhea. If so and the test was negative, you have nothing further to worry about.
Avatar m tn The doses of azithromycin studies for treatment of chlamydia, NGU, and gonorrhea have been studied when the medication is taken as single doses. Thus, questions about doses taken at lower doses and on different schedules is difficult to answer and require estimation of their effectiveness as opposed to answers based firmly on scientific studies.
Avatar m tn Yes I have been tested negative for HIV and syphillis. I actually have Gonorrhea too in my throat and got ceftriaxone injection.
Avatar m tn It can take up to 2 weeks for all symptoms to go away. Can't say what the liquid is. Testing while on medication can flaw the test.
Avatar n tn Thanks for your prompt reply. I am glad you think the 2 g of azithromycin would address NGU and gonorrhea. I have had some mucus stands in my urine for 2-3 months (if not longer) which started before my sexual risk exposures I outlined. This could be prostatitis. Looking at today's posts, you had a lot of similar questions today. Thanks again!
Avatar f tn My doc prescribed me 1 g of zithromycin and 500mg of cipro for gonorrhea and chlamydia. I have some strange antibiotic allergies. He explained that cipro is not as effective and we would retest. But how un effective is it and is it safe to be taken together? I just got them today and am nervous because the pharmacist said I should be careful if I have any heart problems...which I don't.
Avatar n tn Three days later I visited an STD clinic and I was told I may have urethritis so I was given a one-time dose of Azithromycin. I was also tested for chlamydia/gonorrhea but I will not know the results until next week. It has now been three days since I have taken the Azithromycin however my symptoms (tingling/throbbing sensation in penis, burning when peeing) has yet to go away. In fact, I think it may have gotten worse (but still no discharge). My questions are: 1.
Avatar m tn 0 grams (4 500 mg pills) taken at one time is just as effective as penicillin for syphilis treatment however, there are some cases of treatment failures with azithromycin for syphilis treatment and many of the treatment failures have come from San Francisco where you apparently live. Thus this is a matter of concern. While many people will be cured by therapy of early syphilis with azithromycin, the dose you have received is not the recommended dose.
Avatar n tn It seems as if he is treating you for gonorrhea (rocephin), chlamydia (azithromycin) and a urinary tract infection (cipro). You might want to eat when you take the cipro and azithromycin.
Avatar n tn Azithromycin is not recommended treatment for gonorrhea. It is for chlamydia and it can take anywhere from 24 hours to a few weeks for all symptoms to subside. It depends on the person being treated and how their body responds to treatment as well as how far the infection has progressed.
Avatar f tn Symptoms continued after 3 days and I went for an in person visit and got treated for chlamydia, trichomoniasis, and gonorrhea. I took a shot of ceftriaxzone and a does of azithromycin and metronidizole. My test for chlamydia, trichomoniasis, and gonorrhea came back negative and 3 days later my symptoms persisted. I went back and was tested for the same again, as well as a urine culture- tested negative and no growth. I was given Doxycycline and taking for 3 days. Still having symptoms.
