I understand there would be a likely reduction in PSA, but that new PSA baseline be established and return to monitoring of PSA velocity. Not sure what, if any, benefit this would provide. I am considering brachytherapy as an ultimate choice of treatment, but do not want my "window" for it to close. Your thoughts?
s father passed away from prostate cancer that spread to the back bone and blood. My dad is on Avodart and his PSA is 1.5 which the doctor is very happy with. His doctor, who is a specialist, said that if the PSA does not go up in 6 months and continues to decrease, then he may not need another biopsy after the 6 months unless the PSA goes back up. My dad is in a study and is being evaluated every 4 to 6 months.

Three years ago, I was diagnosed with BPH, and prescribed a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. Urine stream improved. Frequency abated. I asked my urologist to consider putting me on the standard dosage of Depo Testosterone, strictly as an exogenous source of free testosterone, due to malaise, fatigue, etc.
As I have mentioned earlier, studies suggest inverse associations between obesity and PSA with low PSA levels found on obese people. However it has also been suggested that PSA concentrations are lower among men with higher BMI or with higher energy intake. Since you have increased the time gap between your diet, it is less likely to be the reason for your low PSA levels.

Saw my primary MD today. He said that the Flomax relaxes muscles in the bladder and prostate, and the Avodart shrinks the prostate. He said that after a year or so, if the prostate has gone down and reduced the problems, they like to eliminate the Flomax, as it is no longer necessary. Long story short, I now have a prescription for Avodart alone. I realize that it may not reduce the surgery risk, but one less drug is a good thing.
I'm 68 years old and have had Cataracts for over 2 years. I've been taking Avodart for over a year. Should I stop taking Avodart and wait awhile before cataract surgery or will the informed Dr be able to work with my eyes? I've never taken Flomax and have heard the warnings from the commercial and read about Flomax. I'm concerned about any complications.
I'm also pretty active. Can I still swim after surgery and what are the chances of the lens shifting or coming loose?
When I developed gynecomastia (which is minor and I ignore) I lowered the dose of AVODART to one twice a week which is 8/month (from 15/month). AVODART has a long half life. Will 8/month still work? I wrote to GLaxo who make Avodart and they said what you said "ask your physician". My physician is very busy and I don't want to waste his time. My next appointment is in June and I will ask at that time if I don't have an answer by then.

I want to share a similar experience but want to preface it with the caution that this was only what happened to me. Its not intended to say this is whats happening with you but? It could be. I too had difficulty passing urine and it became bad enough that my Doctor had me self Cathing (Use a cath only long enough to drain the bladder say 6 or 7 times a day) I was sent to the hospital to have Urodynamics testing. This is a test to measure your urine flow. Mine was zero.

6, then repeat after 5 week, PSA come back 3.8, at the same time did free PSA, but fPSA is very low, and up %fPSA/PSA about 11%, and this may need biopsy. But as I mention, PSA shows so much difference in such a short time. What is his means and the if PSA and fPSA really correct or accurate? If hose test results can be trust to determine the biopsy. I read about tests, and all point cPSA id better than PSA, to calculate % to determine if biopsy really needed. Specailly if PSA is under 4.
Dr performed a DRE and found a nodule, followed by an ultrasound and found calcifications. Volume was 27 (so PSAD around 14%?). Free PSA around .53 (ratio around 13%?). He opted not to biopsy but said follow-up in six months. I've seen that prostatitis and BPH can raise the PSA, but haven't read anything about calcifications causing the rise. Is he expecting the PSA to level off or decline in six months? 27 doesn't seem "enlarged" to me anyway.

I am suffering from BPH for the last 4 years and I am taking DUTASTERIDE (AVODART) and Alfuzosin .
Unfortunately , these meds do not help much since few months ago.
I also about a new procedure named: gat-goren (GG), that sounds as non-pervasive.
Did anyone hear about the GG procedure and can share experience or knowledge about that ?
Hi HSV i falls into the false positive range as any number 3.5 or below needs retesting and if you took the test at least 3 month post any exposure its almost certainly a false positive.
Your negative for hsv2. Any number below .99 is negative.
I am now 68 and I have had a hard prostate for the last 6 years with no symptoms but a rising PSA. 4 months ago my PSA was 10.8 now 4 months later it is 15.7 and still no symptoms. For 6 years each DRE has produced a hard prostate with rising PSA. If my prostate had cancer in it being hard for the last 6 years wouldn't there be some signs of prostate cancer other then rising PSA?
My husband had a prostate MRI one week ago and the doctor's office called and set up an appointment for next week to, I suppose, reveal the results. I'm assuming if it were good news, he might have just said on the phone without an appointment. My question: is a prostate MRI sufficient to determine cancer or would a biopsy have to be the definitive answer? Can he say "it's cancer" and then set up a treatment plan or do we have one more step?
