whats the difference between xanax and ativan? Drs. refuse to give me xanax because they say its addicting. But the ativan only helps if i take it b4 ed as prescribed. I still have panic attacks during the day. The xanax was most helpful. But then i dnt want to get addicted to them. my panic attacks are bad. i feel like my head is going to erupt, explode. i feel like i'm going to get n a car wreck. i always feel like im goin ti die n the most horrible way.
I as well have taken both Xanax and Ativan. I personally feel that the Ativan is better. I do not take it often. Only when I am having an attack coming. The biggest difference I felt in the two medications was that with Xanax, I woke up very groggy still not much calmer. Ativan I do not wake up groggy and I actually am relaxed.
I think you would benefit from trying it. IF you do not care for it than either ask to be put back on Xanax or a different one all together.

Clonazepam (Klonipin) and diazepam (Valium) are longer acting benzos than the alp. and loraz. (i.e. Xanax and Ativan). Doctors will usually prescribe the longer acting ones for longer periods of time while the others are usually prescribed on an as needed, short term basis. In my opinion, all are pretty good at what they are designed to do.
ADs like SSRIs are the most commonly prescribed...examples are Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Lexapro, Celexa, etc....
I'm on klonopin with ativan as needed. I used to take just ativan as needed but as life got more stressful and my tolerance built up I found I was taking what I felt to be way too much ativan (2-3 mg / day). Right now I take .5 mg klonopin 2x/day and and .5 mg (or 1 mg) ativan as needed, which is once every 1-2 weeks.
I WAS GIVEN XANAX 0.5 FOR SLEEP I TOOK A TOTAL OF 65 PILLS FOR 29 DAYS REALLY EQUALS OUT TO THREE TIMES ADAY . FIRST I WANT TO SAY I HAD NO CLUE WHAT THIS DRUG COULD DO. I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST A REGULAR SLEEPING PEOPLE . WHEN I REALIZE IT WAS ADDICTED I QUIT COLD TURKEY!!!! I WAS OK FOR 3 DAYS THEN I ENDED UP IN THE ER WITH SHAKING THOUGHT I WAS DYING . ONCE AGIN I WAS GIVE ATIVAN 0.5 TO RELAX . CAME HOME LOOKED UP I HAVE TAKEN EIGHT PILLS OUT OF ONE MONTH.
I take Ativan as needed (for super-serious PAs, which is rare). Ativan and Xanax are both short-acting benzodiazepenes that are useful on an as-needed basis (just like how you are taking it right now). If Xanax is working for you, then don't switch. I didn't think there would be much difference in how each works but one worked for sejjajsmom and one didn't so if you have one that works then stick with it.
I thought I would add, coming of of Benzodiazapines (ativan, xanax, klonopin etc.) is a whole other ball game.
I came off of ativan, after 4 years use, and it was pretty hard. But I went on Remeron to help with withdrawal and it HELPED SO MUCH.
And I have been ativan clear for 4 years now. :)
Every now and then I will take the occasional Xanax. But I mean EVERY NOW AND THEN, as in ONE every 6-12 Months.
Does anyone know why the Thomas Recipe suggest valium and using ativan only if you can't get valium? Is there a big difference between these two? Thanks!!
t be scared to drop the remainder of the xanax..i have never taken klonopin but i do take xanax..i am not sure what the difference is as far as the klonopin goes..i take xanax 1mg/dy i do know that it is a short acting drug..so maybe klonopin lasts a little longer??? either way..they are both benzos and you should be fine to drop the xanax..keep posting and know that we are all here for you..
They are both very addictive along with every other benzodiazepine(valium,klonopin,ativan, librium,xanax) with xanax the one thing that can make it worse is the fact that if you abruptly stop using it you can have a siezure depening on your dose and how long you've been taking it. But in the end ativan and xanax basically rank about the same in my opinion, but you should really contact your prescribing doctor to get their opinion.
What does Xanax consist of? What do they make it from? what if any chemical base or basses are in it? What is in it that can cause it to be addicting?
anyone with the same problems should try asking your doctor for ativan or medicnes like ativan. I know that it is similar to xanax..and these types of medicinces have a bad rep with the doctors, but why? is it because they ACTUALLY work? yes they can be addicting, but when taken in moderation, ativan has helped me so much. I am done living my life the way my heart tells me i should.

My Doctor just switched me from Ativan to Valium. I am hoping the Valium will work better for me.
After being on Xanax for a the last year for anxiety associated with ADD, my doctor and I decided to transition me off Xanax and on to Ativan. Xanax was just too heavy. It helped with anxiety but caused depression. I am one week into the transition process. I've reduced my daily in take of Xanax by 1/3 and started slowly with the Ativan. Some withdrawal symptoms crop up with taking less Xanax so I am being careful.
my question is, when is it ok to take the ativan? my last xanax was earlier tonite. is it ok to just stop xanax and go right to ativan?
t an exact science, but per equivalency charts, approximately 0.5mg of Xanax equals 1mg of Ativan, so the Xanax is roughly twice as potent, mg to mg. Again, not an exact science. So, technically, you DID take a higher dose of the Ativan than the comparable dose of your Xanax.
How often are you needing to take these? Today for example, you took two doses in a 4 hour period.

Did you doctor say WHY he wants to make the change? Sometimes, to tackle tolerance issues (needing a higher and higher dose to maintain the same level of effectiveness) doctors will recommend switching to another med in the same class. Are you having issues with tolerance? Is the Xanax just not working like it once did?
Your doctor is planning on gradually weaning you off the Xanax, while at the same time, gradually stepping you up in doses with the Ativan.
Stop taking Ativian right now. I loved Ativan. But .5 MG of Ativan Is just going to cause you to withdraw Into panic attacks over and over and over. Ativan Also causes you to get mentally and physically addicted much like It's your emergency pill.
Try Klonopin, If you're getting Ativan you should have no problem getitng and using this medicine as they are In the same class (Benzodiazipine) and much less In strength and addiction.
I got the Xanax from a doctor in urgent care and my psychiatrist prescribed me Ativan, he told me to try both to see which one I liked better (not on the same day of course). But now I am terrified to try the Ativan after the way Xanax made me feel. Will it have the same reaction? Are they basically the same med or will they affect me differently?

you say that the Xanax was more effective for you than Ativan, yet you are actually prescribed the Ativan, correct?
Your doctor should have no issue in switching you...both meds are short-acting benzodiazepines meant to ward off a panic attack...a short-term therapy...like you say you are using them already. If one is more effective than the other then it only makes sense to request the med that seemed to help you the most.
Just wondering if Xanax is anything like Ativan?? I have a Drs app coming up and I am thinking of asking for Xanax but if its anything like Ativan then I don't want it.... Ativan makes me sleepy! I have anxiety and I am just wanting something to calm me down but not make me go to sleep.
