Common Questions and Answers about Ativan and parkinson's

Avatar m tn I have seen a number of postings on this forum regarding the difficulty breathing experienced by individuals afflicted with Parkinson's disease. My 74 year old father has Parkinson's and has difficulty breathing. He appears to struggle to exhale, almost as though he is holding his breath. He complains that he feels like he is going to explode. Sometime he can be talked out of it by telling him to exhale and modeling the behavior (breathing out a large breath).
Avatar f tn I suffer from anxiety and depression. My husband has Parkinson's. How can I handle his choices of driving or doing dangerous work? I can't control all his actions. He is an extremely stubborn person. To what degree am I responsible for what he chooses to do? With my health, I can't go on with this overwhelming feeling of responsibility to control his choices!! Thanks for listening and your encouraging advice and understanding.
444922 tn?1205098764 Hello. There is a new test developed by researchers ( Dr Rubio and associates) in Australia, specifically designed to screen for Parkinson's disease. It is a genetic test and screens a number of genes for Parkinson's disease. There is also a good evidence of association between Parkinson's disease and Essential tremors. Essential Tremor is considered to be a risk factor for Parkinson's disease.
Avatar f tn I took my .5 mg ativan and one benadryl for stuffy nose. Now wide awake and have to be up to work in 2 hours. Has this ever happened to anyone?? I also take my 12.5 zoloft in morning will this make me more jittery??
Avatar f tn My mother aged 60 yrs suffering from dizziness while sitting or standing and imbalance during walking from last two months. She also sometimes has slurred speech and lack of coordination and nausea/vomiting . Her BP, hemoglobin and sugar is normal. Initially treated by a ENT specialist for 15 days and a audiogram test was also done. Test was normal with minor hearing loss in left ear. Even after 15 days of medication no improvement took place. Then she was referred to neurologist.
Avatar m tn Hello and welcome to the forum. Thank you for your post and we can understand your worry about Parkinson's. We're really glad thought that you are working with specialists. Remember that both Essential Tremor and Parkinson's both can ave hand tremors but that they are two distinct and separate disorders. This article goes through the differences between the two and focuses information on essential tumor which is your diagnosis. https://www.mayoclinic.
443006 tn?1229201842 If I remember correctly ET can start at any age but becomes progressively worse as we age. There is also a link between ET and Parkinson's Disease. It appears the treatment medications have exacerbated your condition. It is typical for tremors to worsen in performance situations. Tremors can also worsen with fatigue, strong emotions, caffeine, low blood sugar and some antidepressants. Going through tx certainly fatigues us and causes our emotions to soar out of control as well.
Avatar n tn I have for four years trying to get a diagnosis for my father and have been unsuccessful so far. One movement disorder specailist diagnosed him with Multiple System Atrophy because he did not respond to the parkinson's medicine and his heart rate was high. Another specailist disagreed and thought he might have catatonia because this all happened 4 yrs ago when my mother passed.
Avatar n tn Re my inquiry March 19th regarding a75 year old female whose head bobbed almost constantly at times, you replied it might indicate Parkinson's Disease and asked if there were any other symtons such as trembling of the hands. Trembling of the hands is not really noticeable but I did observe when she was holding a sheet of paper a slight movement.
Avatar f tn I started 5 mg Celexa 5 days ago and the doctor gave me .5 mg Ativan for just in case. My question is how long until the Celexa starts working? If I use the Ativan too often will it effect how the Celexa works? How hard are these to come off of?
Avatar f tn Hi Cessy and welcome to our little MS community, Diagnosis Parkinson's in a someone in their 30's would generally be classed as early onset Parkinson's and because of the rarity of Parkinson's for that age group, misdiagnoses would definitely be a possibility. I've actually read statistics that put the misdiagnosis rate as high as 1 in 5 in general for Parkinson's.
Avatar m tn Okay, well how are you directed to take them both? Is one as needed, both as needed, and if so, how do you know when to take which? Do you take one of them regularly? It's pretty uncommon to be prescribed two short-acting benzos concurrently. The equivalency between the two meds isn't an exact science, but per equivalency charts, approximately 0.5mg of Xanax equals 1mg of Ativan, so the Xanax is roughly twice as potent, mg to mg. Again, not an exact science.
Avatar m tn What symptoms of a hangover are you talking about? If you're speaking of anxiety, that's most likely not a hangover, but rather the typical after effects of alcohol consumption. Taking Ativan for hangover symptoms would technically considered abuse of your prescription, since that isn't what it's prescribed for, and all around a bad idea.
Avatar m tn I have tremors as well, memory issues and had very slow movement b4 I had surgery...as I felt I would fall going faster.... I was told my tremors could be associated with my EDS dx....have u been tested for EDS?
Avatar f tn I think the headache was from something else and not the ativan. Woke up this morning with no headache and took .25mg of ativan and no headache. We'll see what happens later today.... I'm a bit sedated right now on just .25mg. too.
1181804 tn?1333402805 OK. I struggled with my opiate addiction so much that I never fully realized how physically addicting I was becoming to ativan too. The doctor who helped me wean off the percocets by putting me on suboxone and then slowly wean me off those over a one year period told me that I can't be on ativan while on suboxone. Well, my Primary Care had put me on the ativan (.5 / 2 X a day- but I took more when I "needed" it.......
Avatar f tn It progressed to having blurry vision and double vision on and off with now full body tremors all the time, all day, all night. Ativan doesn't stop the tremors, neither does the sleeping medication. Now I have no appetite at all, my eyes get blurry, flashing lights and of course I am tired. I did have Bells' Palsy during this too which has resolved somewhat.
Avatar n tn There are no drug interactions with Ativan and bisoprolol. However, the Ativan may cause some low blood pressure. I am curious… why are you taking the bisoprolol if you have low blood pressure and a low heart rate… seeing as it can worsen both of those??
Avatar f tn In addition to depression, I struggle with anxiety and take 1 mg Ativan as needed, up to 3x/day if needed. The Ativan helps with the anxiety but I've noticed if I have to take it for a few days in a row it really seems to affect my mood, in that I often feel even more depressed than I did before taking it. I've been on Klonopin before and all that did was make me fall asleep (even on a very low dose), and at least with Ativan I feel as though I can function without feeling so tired.
1763947 tn?1334055319 If it's any encouragement, my original neuro, who I recently saw on a follow up, said that there's a great deal of research out there looking for the cause of MS. He has many MS patients and keeps up on the latest. He said there are many in the field who believe it has an infectious trigger and are trying to find it, so far without success. Others are looking for a genetic basis for the immune dysfunction.
Avatar f tn Also take ativan 1mg 3 x daily since the brain surgery, and 1-2 at night for help with sleep. Every other sleep aid made above symptoms worse. Did tapered Requip withdrawal while adding the sinemet.  Right now taking  1/2 afternoon and 1 at night.Offers little help with night RLS. None with bad waking.  Horrible to go back to where I was after those months of peaceful nights and NORMAL waking. Any help welcome.
Avatar f tn And the morning is the worst. I just started 5 mg celexa 4 weeks ago and my doctor wanted me to increase my ativan to help with anxiety. It seems like whenever I take too much, I feel sick and loopy. And, it is not that effective for me with dleep. It is more effective during the day to relieve symptoms. I am extremely med sensitive. Does anyone have any experiences with ativan?
Avatar n tn Nobody can predict how any med will work for you -- it's trial and error, unfortunately. What I think your psychiatrist -- and I hope you are using a psychiatrist, not a regular doc -- is getting at is Zoloft, if it works, is a long-term solution in two ways: it works all the time, whereas Ativan is very short acting, and there's a limit to how high a dose and how long one should take Ativan.
