Avatar f tn m off the PPIs now and dealing with some rebound acid hypersecretion now. Could this cause cold sores or cold sore-type sores on the lips? I've never had cold sores before and this is the only thing Ican think of that would cause it.
Avatar m tn If you want to wean her off of the PPIs you have to do it in a VERY slow manner and it could take a number of months to slowly get it down to the point that 'pulling' her off of it doesn't provoke rebound reflux. People on PPIs have known for years that it's hard to get off the stuff, and a recent study in 'control' subjects - persons without reflux to begin with - documented that even those without reflux would suffer rebound reflux when they try to come off of PPIs.
Avatar n tn the thing is I started out with a sore throat. I given a double dose of ppis and then started to get stomach and chest pains. I got these pains while on ppis. everyone says ppis can not cause more reflux, but in my case i think they did.
Avatar f tn Hi, I do not have the anemia, but know that long term use of GERD can cause many health issues and we do have to be monitored and this is y it is very important to modify diet and lifestyle to help wean off the meds. What other means to help reduce the GERD has ur Dr told u to do in addition to meds?
Avatar n tn I think there is a difference between bowel/colon polyps which should be removed, and benign stomach polyps caused by PPIs. I was diagnosed today with a stomach polyp and told it was most likely a result of long term use of a PPI (in this case Pariet). Does anyone know if benign stomach polyps develop into something nastier, grow bigger, can be reduced by diet, or changing PPI med?? Thanks This discussion is related to <a href='http://www.medhelp.
Avatar n tn After colonoscopy, lower and upper CT scans nothing was ever discovered but I have found out the pain and loose bowel and gas problems could hae been due to food intolerance, mainly dairy and carbs. If I leave them out of my diet I am fine. As I have been on ppis before and since the op could this reduction in acid have affected my pancreas and hence a reduction in enzymes for digesting these foods.
Avatar n tn It and other meds such as Losec (Australian name for Prilosec) and Pariet are proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). Interestingly I also have liver cysts - called simple cysts. There may be no connection of course. But I have read somewhere that ovarian cysts can be connected to PPIs. I also have gastro polyps as a result of long term use of PPIs.
Avatar f tn After 10 days of stomach pain/gas/bloating/burping despite a GERD-compliant diet, my GP prescribed PPIs (once daily) and enzymes. After a day or two of taking the PPI, after doing some Yoga poses for indigestion (that turned out to cause heartburn), my heartburns started. Initially milder (pain level 3/10). I also took antacids which helped.
2046312 tn?1360379600 A case series describes three patients who experienced excessive opiate effects of buprenorphine during concomitant antiretroviral therapy with atazanavir, ritonavir, and various nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors. Two of the patients had been on their antiretroviral regimen for several months and reported doped-up feeling, dizziness, and feeling high following initiation of buprenorphine 8 mg/day. The dosage was reduced to 8 mg every other day.
Avatar m tn I was also still in pain whilst taking PPIs but then I changed my diet and the pain got less and less until it eventually stopped. I only ate potatoes, bread, low fat dairy products, plain pasta and certain vegetables. I drank actimel and water only and ate small portions instead of a whole meal. I found eating more than a fist sized portion of food every few hours further irritated my gastritis and i'd have a bad flare up and be up all night in pain.

Avatar n tn I think the confusion about all of the PPIs, including nexium, is that most docs prescribe PPIs without a lot of testing and without that testing it's possible that if someone feels better taking the nexium and stays on it longterm without any testing being done, it could end up masking a more serious problem - like stomach cancer.
Avatar n tn I am a 29 yr old male, had a superficial duodenal ulcer in 2005, My doc had suggested Rabeprazole sodium 20mg which worked well then, he suggested i use it when ever i felt stomach burning or nausea. I have been using Rabeprazole for 5 years now, was workin good, recently my symptoms were back and i started taking 2 doses 20mg each daily.
Avatar n tn Susan, all meds have side-effects and PPIs are no different. Many people report heartbeat rate changes when using PPIs. And the changes in the stools could be due to lack of full digestion of foods due to lowered acid output. Changes in bowel habits are another often reported side-effect of these meds.
268911 tn?1213744781 The doc is not being entirely honest. All of the PPIs carry side-effects and many of them can be directly attributed to the fact that with the lowering of acid in the stomach a person ends up with less true 'digestion' of their food in the stomach. Because of this, a lot of food passed 'unchanged' iinto the small intestine. Since the enzymes in the small intestine do not 'recognize' what's coming through, further digestion is not possible.
547181 tn?1255146506 You can take Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) and/or H2 Blockers anytime during the day, including when you take your ribavirin. Examples of PPIs -- Nexium, Prevacid*, Prilosec, Aciphex Examples of H2 Blockers -- Pepsid, Tagament, Zantac You should not take antacids within 2-3 hours of your ribavirin.
Avatar f tn Just saw this news release from the FDA, and it may affect Lyme patients doubly, since to my understanding Lyme depletes magnesium, and so if you're taking PPIs (proton-pump inhibitors) also, your magnesium levels may be affected more strongly. Something to check with your doc about if you're concerned.
Avatar n tn They are reportedly facing complains like osteoporosis in patients over 50yrs age and possiblities of hip fractures. PPIs are not recommended on a permanent basis. However some physicians do.

746512 tn?1388807580 I tried 40mg protonix for 3 weeks, then twice daily for 2 weeks and now 40mg nexium for 5 days (so far) and none of them have got rid of the symptoms. They help a bit but I'm still getting almost constant asthma symptoms (on max dose of advair), nausea, coughing and clogged nose/ears after eating and bloating. The only thing that works is not eating, doesn't matter if I stay away from the foods that are bad for GERD, any food seems to give me symptoms.
Avatar n tn I quit PPIs 5 weeks ago. I had taken them for 13 years, every day, sometimes having to double dose for severe symptoms, or add antiacids. I've had gastric ulcers and esophageal spasms as well as gastritis and esophagitis. I don't drink or smoke, and I have gradually gained weight throughout the 13 years.
