393685 tn?1425812522 I know Armour and Nature-Throid are porcine. I hope the Major Thyroid (generic I found at Walgreens) is porcine like Armour was. I cant tell much difference yet, only on it for one week so far.
Avatar f tn Naturethroid, Armour, etc. are dessicated porcine thyroid and contain both T3 and T4, along with other thyroid hormones and trace elements. Some people do well on T4-only meds, some do well on synthetic T3/T4 combos, and some only do well on dessicated. It's all an experiment to see what works best for you...what makes most of your symptoms go away. T3-only meds are sometimes used temporarily, but only in special cases.
Avatar m tn GTA-Forte II contains 20 milligrams of porcine thyroid glandular (T3) along with 10 milligrams of zinc and I milligram of copper which are not present in GTA." We periodically are asked about supplements and their actual thyroid hormone content. The description above implies that it contains 20 milligrams of "porcine thyroid glandular" with "T3" in parentheses after it. The implication would seem to be that it contains 20 mg of T3, which, of course is impossible.
1554612 tn?1294410935 Armour thyroid is a dessicated porcine thyroid hormone that has a ratio of about 4 to 1 of T4 to T3. It is a prescription med so you'll need to see a doctor. You should be aware that not too many doctors will prescribe Armour, or its equivalent Nature-Throid, largely because of a mistaken belief that T4 meds are always adequate.
Avatar f tn You could try natural thyroid medications, like Armour, which is a pig thyroid preparation containing porcine T3 and T4. However, if you are responding immunologically to the Synthroid, eventually you could also do the same to the porcine T3 and T4. I don't know how your physician determined that you were responding immunologically to the Synthroid, but this is certainly possible and could negate its effects by its removal.
Avatar m tn I think desiccated porcine thyroid, of which Armour is one brand, can be compounded into a slow release formula. I don't know why they'd have you split the dose in that case. If I were you, I'd question the pharmacist to see exactly what you're taking, if it's really slow release, and if it is why you have to split the dose.
640719 tn?1277140030 I found Canada thyroid and doing very well but if I would have understood Cytomel in the beginning before I switched I would have went that route instead of taking all the time adjusting to the higher levels of porcine desiccated thyroid as I did. Now, I will stay on my porcine thyroid cuz I don't want to break what isn't hurt again by switching again. I'm happy where I am at and refuse to step back again to being ill.
Avatar f tn The doctor cutting your dosage in half makes no sense to me. Both NatureThroid and Armour Thyroid are made from desiccated porcine thyroid. Both contain the same amount of T4 and T3 per grain: 38 mcg of T4 and 9 mcg of T3. You can look at the following links and see their inactive ingredients. http://www.pdr.net/full-prescribing-information/Nature-Throid-thyroid-496 https://www.drugs.com/pro/armour-thyroid.
Avatar m tn GTA Forte by Biotic Research says it contains "porcine glandular concentrate"... it does not say it contains porcine thyroid hormones; it may be only ground up porcine thyroid gland with the hormones removed, which is what OTC products sold in the U.S are supposed to be. The main ingredients are minerals, such as selenium, zinc and copper. Selenium has been shown to help in the conversion of FT4 to the usable FT3. Zinc may help.
Avatar f tn Therefore I´m getting all the more convinced that I would rather use Armour Thyroid instead. But I have a question about Armour due to the fact that I have Hashimotos. I have caught information from many sources (books and internetsources) that the natural porcine hormone extracts in Armour "feeds" the TPO-antibodies and thus encreae the antibody titer. Is this true or is it only a myth? If Armour encreases the antibody titer I wouldn´t dare to ask my doctor to prescribe Armour.
Avatar n tn She prescribed 30 mg of Armour (not 100% sure that is what I received as the bottle just says thyroid porcine) once a day. Is there anything I should know about taking this? It is in a gelatin capsule and it came from a compounding pharmacy. It did not come with any write up on how and when to take it. It is not something I could easily separate as it is in a capsule. I am taking it for a month so I can see if any of my symptoms resolve.
Avatar f tn I went to the pharmacy to pick up my Armour and was quite surprised to hear that there is a national shortage and that natural desicrated thyriod may be pulled off the market. I was only able to get 4 tabs. The last they had and they aren't aware of any other pharmacies that have any left. Over the years I've tried various forms of thyroid replacement and have suffered too many problems to count.
Avatar n tn Switched from a combo of levoxyl (1/2 gr) and Armour (3/4 gr) (total 1 1/4 gr) to all Natural Thyroid (just like armour but without dyes, etc..) Been on one month and now my levels (particularly tsh) are changed. I was "low normal" before on T4 and free T3. They have come up a little but not much- but my tsh went from low normal to very low. TSH .176 (range .45-4.5) T4, free .90 (range .61- 1.76) T3, free, serum 2.8 (range 2.3-4.
464790 tn?1255369345 IF I can not find FT3 medicine I will try to play with Thyroxin levels as Barb suggested but what do you think of Nutri-Meds™ Whole Desiccated Porcine Thyroid Concentrate capsules. 130 mg. I can get it form the net and how should I go about it do you have any Idea???? Thanks.
Avatar m tn Thyroid-S is an over the counter type of med. As such you cannot be sure of the amount of T3 and T4 contained. To me that is like the old saying of "buying a pig-in-a-poke" (pun intended). I'd stick with a porcine NDT type such as Armour Thyroid or Nature-Throid, or the others you mentioned?
Avatar n tn Some people do well on Synthroid (synthetic T4), slow converters have to add a direct source of T3, whether synthetic T3 or dessicated porcine thyroid (Armour, etc.). The debate is long and complicated, but if you search the archives, you will find many discussions on the subject. What works for one may not work for another.
Avatar n tn Has anyone experienced joint pain relief from taking thyroid medication? I had an active auto immune disease that is no longer active, but still have joint pain. I am also recovering from drug and alcohol addiction and am scared to take the medication. I tried it once and felt like my heart was racing, very thirst, and very uncomfortable. It was a bad experience. My doctor told me to half the dose, but I was to scared to try it again.
Avatar n tn Armour is desiccated porcine thyroid, so you take what the pig has naturally in his thyroid. With synthetics, you can vary the ratio of T4 to T3. Do you have recent labs to post with reference ranges? Any symptoms of hypo or hyper? Your thyroid doctor seems to have a much better grasp of thyroid problems than your GP has.
Avatar m tn I converted to whole thyroid from Levothroxine about 6 months ago and seem to have developed an allergic reaction. I am hoarse and often have phelm in my throat. I find that I have to clear my throat consistently. I am also losing weight and often have a sickly feeling in my stomach. I also burp very often and often have loose stools. I also wheeze a bit I have been checked for reflux and everything else but the Doctors have not found anything. I don't eat Pork or any Porcine products.
Avatar f tn The ingredient is Thyroid Extract USP powder which is the same thyroid extract used in Armour Thyroid tablets. A compounding pharmacist makes up the prescription in store. I could see the powder through the clear capsule.
Avatar f tn Synthroid (along with Lexoxyl and generics), which contains only T4. Armour (and other desiccated porcine thyroid products) contain both T3 and T4. Some people need that extra T3, some don't. It's partly a matter of personal preference and partly what works best for you, preference aside. You've already had TSH test at 800, so that is a very firm indicator of hypothyroidism. Your symptoms are also classic hypo symptoms. Be sure to ask your doctor for FREE T3 and FREE T4.
734073 tn?1278896325 I am 32, have hypothyroid for 8 years now. I was switched from Synthroid to Armour thyroid by a new doctor and never felt worse. I did it for 2 weeks and continued to feel worse. Body aches, moodiness, etc. I switched back to Synthroid and feel good again.
Avatar m tn That can be either in synthetic form (Cytomel and generics) or it can be desiccated porcine thyroid (Armour, NatureThroid, ERFA, etc.). All desiccated brands contain both T3 and T4 in predetermined amounts. Some doctors don't like to prescribe Armour because they don't understand it. Other doctors use it almost exclusively. It's all a bit of an experiment to find what works best for you.
Avatar f tn Yes, Armour, NatureThroid, Erfa, etc. are all brands of desiccated porcine thyroid. They are all similar but all have different inactive ingredients. Sometimes the inactive ingredients impact absorption.
