Common Questions and Answers about Armour thyroid or synthroid

armour-thyroid

535882 tn?1396576685 As for the question about switching meds, as a patient - I did have trouble switching from Synthroid to Armour. After all this time - now on desiccated thyroid hormone - I am fine, but I think I had a hard time b/c of being so seriously ill while on Synthroid.
Avatar n tn Could you explain why Armour is better than Synthroid? I had pappilary thyroid cancer almost 9 years ago. Have been doing pretty well, usual tiredness but nothing horrible, until about 7-8 months ago. That's when the utter exhaustion set in, short term memory loss (I'm a details person, so this was totally new for me), mood swings, increased allergy issues. After a while I started researching and found these are typical hypo symptoms.
Avatar f tn Personally I take them both, Armour and Synthroid, at the same time and I feel much better then when I was taking only Armour or only Levothyroxine. When you start taking Armour we need at least a month for the body to get used with the medication and to start feeling better. For how long you take Armour and why you are not happy with it?
Avatar f tn Any advice on which dosage would be closer to right for me if I do fairly well on 2 grains Armour or slightly less??? And on Synthroid, where do I want my Ft4 levels to be - mid range, or higher? On Armour I am used to them being rock bottom. Any input would be appreciated - thanks!
Avatar f tn I switched from synthroid 137 mcg to armour 60 mg in July- Saturday I ended up in the emergecy room because they thought I was having a stroke- II am 56 yrs old on thyroid for 30 years. My diagnosis was Bells Pasly with a extremely low thyroid- dr said your thyroid crashed.
Avatar n tn Hi Again, I have been reading here and seeing a lot about both Armour and Thyrolar as thyroid replacement. Before going off my meds to be scanned again I was taking both Synthroid and Cytomel, will these in combination do the same thing as Armour or Thyrolar? I am still learning ,and as a lot of you know the first year after Thyroid cancer, your brain doesn't seem to work properly all the time, so concentration is limited at times to say the least.
533212 tn?1245849211 My question is after researching the internet, and reading a lot of good press for Armour Thyroid, should I ask my doctor to put me on Armour Thyroid or just add a prescription for Cytomel to bring my T3 levels back within range. Out of curiosity, I've decided to look at all the previous tests that I have accumulated over the past 19 years, and discovered that in all those years I had not been tested for T3 levels until just recently. Go figure. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
Avatar m tn That sounds a bit strange, since it is porcine thyroid. That is the same as used in Armour Thyroid, or Nature- Throid. Those contain T4 to T3 in a ratio of about 39 mcg of T4 and 9 mcg of T3 in each grain of the NDT, which is 60 mg. I don't see how they could do anything to change the ratio. Anyway if you are getting 150mg (2 1/2 grains) of the med, I expect that it is giving you 2 1/2 times the 39 mcg of T4 and 2 1/2 times the 9 mcg of T3, for a total of 97.5 mcg of T4 and 22.
596383 tn?1219606396 hi, the simply put, the frees show how your body is responding to the medicine. I wouldn't worry about "piggy" hormones unless you are a vegetarian. Armour or synthroid really has to be a personal preference. Synthroid caused to many complications for me. If you do decide to go to armour, I would advice you to titrate up. It will give your body a chance to adjust to the T3 and also to split your dose in to at least 2.
Avatar f tn I would HIGHLY recommend a dessicated version like Armour, Nature Thyroid, or ERFA (Canadian) This already has the T4, T3, and even T1 and T2 that you need to feel good. Feel free to ask questions if you have them. PS. I know first hand since I have been down the thyroid road.
Avatar m tn Out of context this is confusing. I'm sure the lab results will answer your question in a short time. We can presume what he was thinking, which is merely a guess, and could be more confusing, or you can wait, which makes more sense. The outcome will be three things; raise med, lower, or stay the same. Not to worry.
Avatar m tn I have been taking Armour thyroid with satisfactory results. Unfortunately, I can't find a pharmacy that has it in stock. My M.D. has suggested that I begin taking Synthroid and I am scared that my symptoms may return. I am taking 90mg of Armour and my prescription is for 150mcg of Synthroid. If I have no choice and must change, how do you suggest I make the change.
Avatar f tn I started on Armour thyroid 30mg 3 days ago and I woke up today with headache, dizziness, and unbalanced. My story started 1 month ago when my doctor started me on synthroid 50mcg. I developed left facial heaviness, dizziness, and unbalanced after only taking synthroid for 10 days. My Endo doctor told me to stop taking synthroid. I stop taking synthroid for 2 weeks, and the dizziness, left facial heaviness, and headache never completely resolved.
Avatar f tn Does Armour or dessicated thyroid from canada seem to help relieve lingering hypo symptoms like hair loss and low ferritin better than synthroid ? I've been on synthroid for 4 years and still have those symptoms ??
Avatar m tn I am sure you all know the many effects that can be blamed on an underactve thyroid and the many that say that the T3 in Armour is something not provided in Synthroid. While Synthroid has improved some of my lethargy, skin problems, concentration, etc, I would be foolish not to try to get the best improvement possible. I only tried Synthroid because I read that an underactive thyroid could cause the problems I have endured for many years and I had to twist the doctors arm to try a low dosage.
Avatar f tn Most likely you will reach those levels with the Armour Thyroid. A good thyroid doctor will treat a hypo patient clinically by testing and adjusting Free T3 and Free T4 as necessary to relieve symptoms, without being constrained by resultant TSH levels. Symptom relief should be all important, not test results, and especially not TSH. So you need to expand testing to include Free T3. Free T3 is the most important because it largely regulates metabolism and many other body functions.
Avatar n tn I am not sure armour can help with anything but the thyroid. Why did they put you on armour after being on synthroid for so long? I had real problems with the armour and went very hyper on it. I went back to the synthroid. I am still trying to adjust the dose after being on it for four months. I hope they started you off on a small dose of the armour.
Avatar f tn I am 28 yo female, I had my thyroid removed 10 years ago due to non cancerous nodules growing on it. I've been on synthroid since I was 11 yo. Everything was fine until I went off birth control pills. All of a sudden I had a hard time tolerating my 137 mcg dose of synthroid. I switched to armour thyroid, but couldn't tolerate any more than 60 mg. I felt great on just 60 mg, however my TSH shot up from 1 to almost 8.
519035 tn?1348275773 I mentioned this to my family doctor and he emphatically stated that Armour was a bad choice and that Synthroid is the best med for my thyroid condition and prescribed same. I filled the Px and started the Synthroid and immediately (within a few days) was feeling very poorly and was restless and had a hard time sleeping. I stopped the Synthroid completely and on my own, started taking taking the Armour.
Avatar f tn I am on Armour Thyroid.. I have been on for 8 weeks now. How long does it take to start to feel any better? I have been up and down. I am currently on 60mgs of Armour. 30 in the morning and 30 by 1pm. I just had labs done last week to see where I am number wise.. I was on Synthroid but didnt take. I was on 88mcg. What is that equivalent to with the Armour? Could I be in the right dose? Looking forward to making some new friends that can relate!
Avatar m tn Recently been diagnosed with a 5mm nodule on my gland and hypothyroid.Having issues with unexplained weight gain etc.Being more of a supplement person instead of meds I am concerned about starting Synthroid. I've done alot ofresearch and it's gets been more confusing as to whether armour is better or not.Seems like you need to be a guinea pig to see which works better-Can anyone advise me on their experiences on both/either.
Avatar f tn I would like to know who out there has been on my same dosage w/Synthroid and what dosage are you on w/ Armour? I know everone is different. The only symptom I have that is different, is I have a deep hunger in my stomach that wakes me up at night and is almost painful (painfully hungry). I am still tired.
