Common Questions and Answers about Armour thyroid for depression

Avatar f tn I'm a proponent of Armour thyroid. I've taken the synthetic stuff for 10 years with nothing but negative results. I've suffered from depression and panic attacks during that ten year span and the only thing I've found that works is a combination of brewer's yeast and Armour thyroid. DON’T EVER take the synthetic thyroid, it’s worthless and should be banned.
1877796 tn?1320527991 I have issues with depression on dark days and in the winter since starting Armour. I have never had SAD in my life. Not until I started Armour. Even in the summer, like today... when it's cloudy and drizzly out, I feel so bad... depressed. Anyone else ever experience this on Armour and if so, have you been able to FIX the issue and how? I am already dreading winter and its a ways off!
Avatar n tn They also agreed that for those patients who did not do well on levothyroxine-only therapy, the use of natural desiccated thyroid extract (i.e. Armour Thyroid) was a safe and effective thyroid hormone replacement that doctors could prescribe, even though it remains unlicensed. This is a precedent - and one that the British Thyroid Association are most definitely very unlikely to be happy with.
581310 tn?1253029550 I am no natur-throid and have been for almost two weeks but I was on Armour for 9 months before swtiching to the natur-throid. Any advice would be appreciated.
895308 tn?1304340982 Since starting Armour thyroid for the last 4 months or so, I have noticed a need to go down in the levels of Wellbutrin I was taking. I began to get insomnia and/or heart racing at nights. The last 2 months I have gone from 400mg of Wellbutrin a day to 300mg a day. Now my Dr. has agreed to go down another notch to 150 a day. Has anyone experienced this before? I currently take 2 1/2 grains (150mg) of Armour split in 2-3 doses a day.
1554612 tn?1294410935 Are you looking for Armour thyroid medication? You would have to get a prescription from your doctor, then get the medication from your pharmacy. I see you are in Ireland; I'm not sure it's available there.
Avatar n tn I have the same problem! My Dr says that I am "clinically" fine. Most Drs. don't want to try to treat your symptoms, they just want you to believe you are ok. I have asked to be referred to a endocrinoligist one who specializes in Thyroid disease. There are other medicines for thyroid disease that are not synthetic, I don't think Drs. recommend them because the pharmaceutical company's don't benefit.
Avatar m tn I have been on Armour for several years (90 mg most recent) and apx 2 months ago switched to Nature Throid 81.25 only because of cost. Having symptoms like heart palpitations, trouble sleeping, irritability, depression. Am I just better on Armour or could it be a dosage adjustment needed on the Nature Throid? I just had a blood draw but cant see doc for 2 weeks. Need a refill TODAY and leaning toward filling the Armour. Any advice appreciated!
Avatar m tn I had my thyroid removed Nov 2002 due to a tumor. I have suffered with depression ever since it was removed. I am always tired and have a hard time to get the energy to do much. I have lost all motivation and ambition in life. I have been diagnosed with depression and take antidepressants that help some but I just have not been able to come out of it. My personal and professional life have suffered dearly.
738890 tn?1232214279 My TSH has almost doubled since last year from 1.79 to 3.29. My other numbers - T4 (6), T3 uptake (34), free T4 (2) - are relatively stable. Should I be concerned? I'm exhausted - stressed and depressed. My GP says my numbers are normal. A few years back I suffered a thyrotoxicosis that left me slightly hypothyroid. 30/mg Armour thyroid/day had me feeling better. I've read that TSH over 2 is now considered indication of hypothyroidism. Is this true?
Avatar n tn I am at end stage of Hashimoto's disease and really struggling to feel ok and get the right treatment. I even started to have neuromuscular symptoms along with pretty severe depression. I'm 36 and became like an old woman! I was on 150 mg of levothyroxine and switched to Armour as I wanted to try T3. As I don't think I am tolerating Armour that well, I asked my doctor for an alternative. He wrote me a prescription for 50 mcg levothyroxine per day plus 20 mg of Cytomel.
Avatar f tn Also, she said she had to go on antidepressants for a while to feel balanced a few years ago. Said this may or may not be thyroid-related depression. I don't feel depressed! I'm the happiest I've ever been in my life! I just am always so tired and unmotivated. I am hesitant to just start popping pills because they suggested it. Would like to find a good endo to get a second opinion. Thanks in advance!
Avatar m tn The medications prescribed can cause tremors. That being said she has a number of symptoms and the history provided is not adequate to even take a guess at what is going on. I suspect there are several things at once. My two cents is to get her off all the medications except the thyroid med, which is prescribed by an endochronologist after blood tests. I cannot provide advice on "weaning". She also needs a neurological work-up and evaluation.
Avatar f tn Can anyone tell me if switching from levoxyl or synthroid to armour improved your symptoms at all. Can my severe depression even be linked to my thyroid problems? Please advise.
Avatar f tn Thank you for responding. I have been on Armour for 3 years and have had body aches for most of them. My labs fall into the normal range so the doc left me at the 60 dose. It didn't occour to me that it might be hypo until last week so I upped the dose and feel much better. Would the labs be different for Armour and Synthroid? I've been a thyroid person for so long I forget that might be a problem. 13 yrs on Synthroid before thyroidectomy 5 yrs ago.
Avatar f tn I am on 15 grams of Armour thyroid and the only side effect that I have had is a little bit of sweating..I am also in menopause so I am not sure if this is why I am sweating more or the Armour. No other side effects thus far. I was on synthroid and it nearly took all of my hair out. I hated it.I kept asking the doctor about it and he was saying that it was nothing they could do because synthroid was the best medication to take.
Avatar m tn t benefit from Synthroid - you are very lucky your found Synthroid to work best for you - it is the thyroid drug of choice and many doctors will not continue Armour if you need to change to someone else. Go back to what works - and the question is still ot there - Why did you try it if Synthroid was working?
457926 tn?1216002420 they changed my meds agian to armour thyroid 2 tabs of 90 mg does anyone know about this med. This discussion is related to Help very confused.
Avatar f tn Do you have an endocrinologist who knows about thyroid cancer. Armour is not recommended for us who have had thyroid cancer. Good luck.
Avatar m tn 150 armour thyroid, for over a year... been on armour for 4 years labs are still whacky free t4 .56 low free t3 3.26 High tsh 1.03 normal ? testosterone is low 1.24 Low 1.75-7.81 Estrogen total serum 119.4 which is high as the range for upper limit was 115.
Avatar n tn Dear Gimel, I have taken Armour Thyroid for years in USA -- am now residing in south Kerala state, India. Can you please send me info about how to purchase Forrest Labs Armour Thyroid here in India? Thank you!
Avatar n tn He is sick and tired of feeling tired, etc and is planning on taking Armour Thyroid. He has seen how Armour Thyroid has helped me this past year and a half as well as seeing what it has done to make his sister feel so much better the past 3 months. I honestly feel since he's had extensive blood work done and they did find below normal testosterone, low amino acids, low cortesole (sp) and some other things.
1258539 tn?1293840202 You have normal thyroid levels - if these were before Armour, then there is no indication for this treatment. If levels on armour, then would need to evaluate pre-treatment levels. If you have lost this much weight - would recommend second opinion - start w/ general internist. Also ask for cortisol (adrenal) check.
