Avatar m tn The first step would be to rule the causes for insomnia like sleep disorders. Next it is treated with both medical and non medical therapy. Medical (sedatives) are given in the temporary initial phase, this is combined with non medical measures like sleep hygiene, relaxation therapy, stimulus control, and sleep restriction which are referred to as cognitive behavioral therapies. As the non medical measures help to restore your sleep rhythm, the sedatives are withdrawn.

Avatar f tn If this always happens as you are going to sleep and/or wakes you up from sleep, my first thought would be sleep apnea. Before I was diagnosed and began using a CPAP, I had become very afraid to sleep, and avoided it till I collapsed in exhaustion. Much of what you describe is what I experienced. Since I got my CPAP working well for me I have not had one episode of the sense of choking or difficulty breathing.
Avatar f tn It does sound like narcolepsy to me but it could be any of the sleep cycle disorders really. Sleep paralysis is a very common feature of narcolepsy. How old are you? I was convinced I had narcolepsy when I went but I ended up having periodic limb movement disorder. It's where you kick your legs and move your arms all night long. Every time I would get into REM, I would kick my legs or move my arms and it would jerk me out of it. That's what caused me to remember my dreams vividly.
Avatar f tn I think it means you stop breathing while you sleep. thats why you are gasping. There are sleep places you can go to .. the will monitor and observe your and tell you what exactly is happening while you sleep. You might try to note if this happens more or worse during certain times, liike stress, or diet, or does excersize help.. Your teeth, your mouth also figure into it, how your throat reasts when you sleep, is your mouth open, do you lay on your back.
Avatar n tn It is not possible to attribute this to his age without a medical evaluation first. There are many causes of poor night time sleep, and daytime sleepiness. Please advise him to see his doctor - this may not necessarily be a neurological illness, so don't jump to conclusions too quickly with a diagnosis. But please, please, please, get him to stop driving. If he loves the independance of his car then this should be motivation enough to get treatment.
Avatar f tn Sorry to hit you with questions instead of answers, but hopefully they will lead to answers. Are you on any meds that could have sleep disturbance as a side effect? Hopefully you already have a copy of your report so you can examine it for anything you do not understand. In the absensce of of a sleep apnea diagnosis, scrutinize your report for info on the the following: What is said about limb movements? What is said about arousals (count and cause)? Is there any mention of UARS?
