Maybe I can shed some light. I won't attempt to identify drugs as the moderators post asks us not to. I've taken Percocet (forever) and OxyContin (6 months) with OxyIR (6 months). Percocet in my body is vastly different than OxyContin and OxyIR. I found they had next to nothing in common. I have serious chronic pain that has lasted since June of 2007 and right now it's cranking me up so bad that I'm really just getting by.

Ive never heard of a Percocet 30mg, but Percocet and Oxycontin are not the same thing...I believe that Oxycontin is time released while Percocet is not...please someone correct me if Im wrong...hope this helps!

Hi Chuck, I was on about the same doses of Oxycontin and Percocet as you--except I was on 40mg Oxycontin twice a day. I was taking the maximum number of percocet that I could for breakthrough, and I was getting no pain relief from any of it, mostly because I'd become tolerant to the medications. We switched my prescription to Hydromorph Contin and Dilaudid for breakthrough, and the pain relief is amazing for me, with minimal side effects. So, I have had great success with this change.

I take the meds for real pain, and ran out of the percocet, because I try not to take as much oxycontin, becuase it makes me tired and gives me a headache. Any ideas?

i had knee surgery at end of Dec. and am just now coming off the pain pills and am going nuts. I'm sure its the percocet but am alittle confused about the difference between Percocet and the oxycontin as they both have said....OXYCODONE... on the label is the oxy just a time release percocet?

s some advice. You should be taking the OxyContin for persistent pain and the Percocet for breakthrough pain. Since OxyContin is a 12 hour extended-release formulation of oxycodone it can probably be reduced to just twice daily initially since there's only 24 hours in one day. Of course Percocet is an immediate release formulation of oxycodone and thus has a shorter half-life than the OxyContin. Detoxification from oxycodone depends on your level of pain and your desire to stop taking it.

I have been told by my pharmacist that you can now leagally obtain three written prescriptions again that are post dated and therefore you don't have to go back to the dr for 3 months at a time. has anyone here been able to take advantage of this?

Is Percocet the same thing as oxycontin, only in a non time release formula? I heard the time released stuff works better for chronic pain, Does anybody have experiance with that who can help?

I believe that oxycodone is the generic name for Roxicodone, which is also obviously percocet without the tylenol. Oxycontin and oxycodone are the same thing, EXCEPT oxycodone is a quick release tablet, and oxycontin is a slow release of the same med. Hydrocodone is the ingredient in Vicodin and Lortab. Although they are all narcotics, vicodin and lortab are lesser strength than the oxy's and morphine.

If I am not mistaken, oxycontin is extended release while percs are immediate. The base drug is oxycodone so they are the same with a different release mechanism.

Sometimes a long-acting med can help manage your pain better and you can stay at lower dosages, though it seems most people need something for breakthrough pain.

ok oxycodone is same as cotin except codone is a instant release and come in smaller doeage like 15,30,mgs and the cotin is a time released and comes wth bigger mgs like 20,40,60,80 and once was 160 mgs there the same thng basically except the time release on contin and not on the other but other thn that they are the same drug.

The side effect of euphoria is what makes percocet and the long acting form (oxycontin) so addicting. Chasing that effect will require you to take more and more of the medication. And the goal of pain relief will become secondary. The reason why you didn't feel this with the oxycontin is because the medicine is on a time released schedule to be released over a 12 hour period.

I am on Oxycontin 20mg, and Percocet 5/325 for breakthrough pain. My Primary prescibes the Oxycontin and my Orthopedist prescribes the Percocet. Orthopedists have a problem prescribing it also. As a matter of fact they would rather give you a truckload of Vicodin that will ruin your liver. That has been my experience at least. Oxycontin is a very safe and effective pain medication if taken as directed by people who have legitimate conditions that cause them moderate to severe pain.

I have 2 bulging diclsc in the lumbar fegion that are sitting on the l4 l5 nerve and sciatic nerve. Plus arthritis in upper lumbar region. I have been on so many meds and the only thing that helps is percocet. Any suggestions? My doc wants mue on thelonger acting meds with minimal break through meds. I dont do well on oxycontin, any suggestions?

The reason people compare it to it is because it shares some of the same symptoms such as the stomach issues, aches and pains and the overall uncomfortable feeling. If it were me I would've tapered using the percocet. It's not as strong and you can also cut the percocet in half to taper to an even lower dose. That's something you can't do with oxycontin and should never be done. What did your doctor recommend? You have no reason to beat yourself up over any of it.

Or maybe even 40mg and then you may not need anything else for break through pain. I believe the percocet and oxy ir are the same medication as percocet is oxycodone with acemetaphine (sp) and the oxy ir is oxycodone without acemetaphine. It may help to mention to your doctor that you would like a time released med so you don't have to take so many during the day or just want something that lasts longer.

Wannabe is sort of correct, the active ingredient for both the percs and oxys are exactly the same. Oxys are "time released" and therefore are suppose to last longer in your system, however if you break them up, snort them etc.. you violate the time relaeased mechanism and the 1/2 life of the narcotic is the same as any oxycodone pill.

I guess some patients were almost violent about not being prescribed their "regular medications (oxycontin + oxycodone). Any thoughts or comments???

Hello everyone, I suffer from chronic pain due to a disease that has required me to have bone drilled from my skull multiple times. I will spare you the lengthy details, but the pain I feel now is as followed (it is the best way I know how to describe it). After the surgeries I felt like someone was stabbing me in the head with an ax.

In the past when I went off Oxys it was terrible, but after the cold turkey, I found the pain was at the same level as with them. I want to stop the Percocet now and my Dr. wants me to take Suboxone. Do you think I need it and if so what is the shortest amount of time that I will need to take it? Is the withdrawal from Suboxone the same as for Percocet?

They are 5 mg roxicodone is what the brand name is but same thing as Percocet OxyContin all of that is oxycodone is the active opiate and yes please say no you do not wanna go down the road most of us here have been on with them because that fun at first doesn't last long and will ruin your life and make you do things to get it you never thought you would do
