Common Questions and Answers about Are novolog and humalog interchangeable

novolog

209227 tn?1242346745 Is there a difference between Humalog and Novolog insulins? I was told there are exactly the same. But is this true?
Avatar n tn I've never used Novolog, but had used Humalog for quite awhile until about 6 months ago. The Humalog worked pretty well for me,but when i switched to a pump, my doctor had me try Apidra and it's really worked great. My blood sugar comes down a lot faster with the Apidra and it keeps my post meal readings pretty good too....
Avatar n tn My pharmacist is telling me that most diabetics use Humalog (and Novolog use is rare). Has anyone else had problems or switched from Novolog to Humalog? Are there Novolog users out there? Thanks....
Avatar n tn My sister also has type 1 and takes lantus at bedtime and then takes humalog for correction AND to cover food with carbs, so in her case, if her BG is not High (if it IS under a particular number that she and her doc have discussed), then she does not need a correction shot AND if she was not going to eat anything containing carbs at that time, she would not need humalog to cover food, HOWEVER, she would still take her lantus shot at bedtime.
Avatar n tn Depends on how you use your insullin. My doctor gave me an insulin to carbohydrate ratio to use. I use 1 unit of insulin to every 12 grams of carbs I eat. The less carbs I eat, the less insulin I use. I have a very physical job for four hours a day and I don't even need my Humalog when I eat lunch. My pen generally lasts me the whole month. My Humalog is only good for 28 - 30 days.
Avatar n tn i have taken Novolog 70/30 for many years and control the dose by my blood sugar readings
Avatar n tn Lantus, Humalog, and Novolog ALL require prescrptions because 1) they have not been out on the market as long as the conventional porcine/bovine insulins (Humulin N, R, L, 50/50, 70/30, etc), 2) The onset of actions for Humalog, Novolog, and Lantus are quite fast (anywhere between 5 to 15 minutes), and although these insulins generally do NOT cause hypoglycemia episodes (low blood sugar), if patients do not know how to use them properly, they can lapse into a hypoglycemia episode and this can
Avatar n tn JackieJo, As you may know, we're not physicians here. While we have considerable personal experience with diabetes, we don't know you or your particulars, so it will be very important for you to meet with a doctor or a certified diabetes educator (CDE) to tailor your transition. As a start, I'd recommend you check in with your local JDRF chapter or branch. They sponsor this Forum and have physical offices all over the US and in several other countries.
Avatar n tn When are are you injecting the Novolog? Right when you eat? Or earlier. My daughter's doc wants her to inject her Novolog 10-15 minutes before any food, so it has a chance to start working first. You have to be careful with this, because if you inject too early you can get low. You might want to talk to your doc about gradually moving your shot earlier and earlier before you actually eat to see if you can find an optimal time that makes the Novolog more effective without making you low.

Avatar f tn my 10 year old has had diabetes for 10 months now.he still constantly suffers with high glucose levels and low levels.doctors recently changed his insulin from novomix30 to humalog mix 25.but he has to have a cup full of apple juice with his breakfast then 1hour later a couple of biscuits (orders of doctors)as the fast acting insulin gives him hypos we cant increase his insulin levels in the morning to help bring down his levels in the afternoon example of his daily levels.BREAKFAST.7am (16.
Avatar m tn now i have diabetic neuropathy.legs are numb and feet are always hurting and cold and numb.but my blood sugars are always good my last a1c was 6.9 vs 11 five years ago when i got on a pump.
Avatar f tn t know why, but she said that Lantus works better if you give the shots on your tummy and buttox and novolog/humalog (fast acting) works better if given in your legs... anyway, this is a lot of information and if you can, please have him see a Diabetes Educator... al least once! It will help a lot because she will provide you with charts and help you to do the math with knowledge of what you are doing, knowing how your body operates! I hope it helps!
Avatar n tn Oldstuff, Logan would have produced some of his own insulin for some time after being diagnosed. This can go on for years. And it is probably why he was able to achieve good control with supplemental insulin. At this stage, he must be totally dependent on injected insulin. Which makes controlling blood sugar levels a lot more difficult. And it calls for a regimen that gives Logan more control. Biphasic and Regular insulin simply doesn't do that.
Avatar n tn m not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes. Humalog and Novolog are different types of fast acting insulin, meaning that they are quickly absorbed into your system to immediately drop your blood sugar. Some people find that one works more effectively than the other, so which is used is really up to the patient. Humulin, more commonly called Humulin NPH, and even more commonly called just NPH, is a long acting insulin.
Avatar n tn m 19 been diabetic since I was 4 and and I have gained 15-20 pounds with my new insulin regimen started about 6 months ago.I take humalog on sliding scale 1 unit per 10 carbs and I take it every time I eat and I also take 50 units of lantus at bed time.So my question is can this be causing my weight gain? I think the lantus initially caused me to gain about 20lbs. to begin with 6yrs. ago and I'm now over weight.I'm on my feet constantly at work 9 hrs.
Avatar n tn I had Gastric By-Pass January 7, 2007 and have lost about 74lbs. I still want to lose about 25 more lbs but since surgery I am having a really hard time controlling my blood sugars. I take 35 units of Lantus and I'm on a sliding scale of Humalog (I take anywhere from 3 to 10 units of Humalog). I just got back from lunch (I ate about an hour ago) and when I checked my blood sugar it was 310. It has gotten to where 250 - 300 is more the normal than before when it was about 80 - 120.
1340011 tn?1276617767 The standard is a basal insulin such as Lantus or Levemir and a bolus such as Novolog, Humalog or Apidra. You might want to work with an endo. Sounds like your other problems are complicating your diabetes, hang in there!
Avatar n tn About a month ago I started taking 36 Units of Lantus at bedtime using the Opticlik Cartridge Delivery System and during the day I use Novolog Insulin throaway Flex Pen and that is 12 units before I eat anything. I have had so much problem with that Lantus Opticlik that my Health Providers will switch me to the Levimere Flex Pen after I use up all the lantus cartridges. Is lantus a better insulin or is Levimere just as good as Lantus using it as a basal 24 Hour insulin???.
Avatar n tn Dear tumtum, i am not a doctor but a person who has ben diabetic 32 years. i am now on an insulin pump and only use Novolog, a rapid acting insulin for both my background and bolus insulin needs. i would recommend you call the clinic as that very well could be a reaction to the Lantus and they may put you on a different background type insulin.
704262 tn?1247674638 I take Novolog and Lantus insulin in the pen forms. I just started taking them like this about 6 weeks ago. I really like them!!! I take the Novolog 5 units in the morning and 5 units in the evenings, with meals. I also use a sliding scale with it. The Lantus I take just before bedtime. Right now, I'm at 25 units, from 45 units 3 weeks ago!!! I've found that when I take both just before bed, my morning fasting blood sugars are really low...like below 80.
Avatar n tn I came off it for same reason, and it made me ill-loads of other symptoms too. Are you still on it and are you still having unexplained hypos, or any other problems?
