Avatar f tn [34-37] Despite these challenges, previous studies have shown that HCV treatment generally was well tolerated by the elderly and there was little or no significant difference in SVR as well as therapy discontinuation rates secondary to adverse effects compared with younger age groups. However, there is a need for prospective randomized controlled trials to be conducted in HCV patients older than 65 years of age to better evaluate the safety and efficacy of HCV treatment in this age group.
Avatar m tn The elderly metabolise benzodiazepines more slowly than younger individuals and are also more sensitive to the effects of benzodiazepines, even at similar blood plasma levels. Doses for the elderly are recommended to be about half of that given to younger adults and are to be administered for no longer than 2 weeks. Long-acting benzodiazepines such as clonazepam are not generally recommended for the elderly due the risk of drug accumulation.

Avatar f tn t personally do anything (my psychiatrist, for example, has most of her practice treating the elderly, which is unfortunate for me because it means she's no longer available for appointments very often but it does help the elderly). One thing to consider -- does she eat very much?

There are physicians who disagree with this conclusion and continue to prescribe the medication.

Avatar m tn However, there are reports of reactivation of the infectious agent (TB or fungus) that caused the granuloma to form in the first place, in immunocompromised individuals or the elderly and/or infirm. This is probably less likely to occur with more densely calcified granulomas.
Avatar n tn Your entire post leads me to suspect your child is suffering from anxiety - doesn't seem like any special one of the disorders; perhaps a combination of more than one. I might suggest you google the phrase "childhood anxiety" or "anxiety in children" or similar phrases to find information about this topic. If anxiety is the issue, your daughter will not outgrow it nor will it go away.
Avatar m tn 00pm and get anxiety in the afternoon and evening from the rib but have medication for that. Other than that I can't complain. I have never been treated before.
248167 tn?1220363690 I am not sure, but I think transient ischemic attacks happen a lot of the time in the elderly, although I suppose could happen in someone younger if they have underlying health issues. I do not know if you take anything for anxiety, but there are a lot of good medications out there to help reduce anxiety, as well as medications for tingling and numbness related to neurological causes. I hope you feel better soon.
Avatar n tn First I would like to know who perscribed Ativan to you for depression. And why they have kept you on if for "years." Ativan is NOT an antidepressant and has no affinity for that disorder. It's a short acting benzodiazipine. (Antianxiety) The main uses for Ativan are anxiety, irritability in psychiatric or organic disorders, preoperatively, insomnia, and as an adjunct in endoscopic procedures.
Avatar f tn In fact, most Doctors have to re-adjust the dosage for their elderly patients on medications because the elderly respond differently to meds. So I guess what I'm saying is that your "elderly friend" should contact her/his Doctor immediately and let her/his Doctor know of these "agitate/angry" responses to her/his meds. Tarrie, since you came her on behalf of your elderly friend, maybe you can guide your friend in the process.
Avatar f tn Amazing! Thank you for the feedback. What sort of treatment did your sweety-pie have? The problem most troubling to see right now (three weeks after the stroke) is her extreme agitation: picking at and removing her clothes, tossing and turning, pulling off the diaper, and trying to remove the catheter, which would no doubt be the worst of these behaviors.
Avatar n tn What does it mean when a brain cat scan says "patchy decreased attenuation in the periventricular white matter' ? my mother was on a brief does of an antipsychotic . Is this recovery from this?
611606 tn?1315517767 Hi Shadow's Sis. Sorry to hear Shadow under the weather. I always go by the following rule; when a cat stops eating and ceases to properly groom itself, then its quality of life has reached a point where it isn't sustainable (assuming there's no cure, of course). Crying over discomfort or pain can be upsetting to watch if there's nothing you can do about it.
Avatar m tn I use to have sex every week with my girl friend to enhance the pleasure i use to take pills for long sex drive but since i have stopped taking that Im failing to have erection while intercourse can any one please suggest me a solution?
Avatar n tn Hi, Urinary retention is a common problem in the elderly male. A stroke can cause urinary retention by altering the brain's ability to cause the bladder to contract on demand. The CVA preceeded the retention by 6 months so it's unclear whether this is a factor. It's not uncommon for patients to have an unrecognized problem causing difficulty voiding after a CVA that became apparent later in time.
Avatar f tn I was wondering if anyone has used herbal remedies for the treatment of mild Anxiety? I am considering trying an Herb for my anxiety but I have read about so many herbal treatments that I don't know which to choose. I have read about valerian, passion flower, ashwaganda, and chamomile and they all seem to be pretty effective. Has anyone had success with this form of treatment?
Avatar f tn I take 10 mg of Celexa and Vistaril for sleep. I think if I upped my dose of Celexa to 20 mg then it would probably work for the anxiety, but I'm trying to lose much needed weight. (I've lost 20 and have about 15 to go). I would obviously rather be happy and fat but I've been trying to lose this weight for about 7 years so I don't want to up my dose just yet. I've been using rescue remedy spray and calms and they help a little.
Avatar m tn There a procedure to go off anti-platelet med for stent implant, reduce the effects of the medication and then bridge with another med...this leaves a one or two day window of vulnerability with an interventional procedure....the risk is very low. Alternative tests to upper GI endoscopy include a barium x-ray and ultrasound (sonogram) to study the organs in the upper abdomen. Study of the stools, blood and stomach juice can provide indirect information about a gastrointestinal condition.
Avatar n tn Kay, I am an OT who also works with the elderly. My understanding is if your TB test shows positive it doesn't mean you have TB, but at some point in your life you have been exposed to TB. Usually, a positive TB test is followed up with a chest X-Ray to confirm that you do not have TB. Being exposed to TB does not prevent you from working with the elderly, but having TB would. Hope this helps.
