I've had a stuffy and runny nose since January of this year. It changes from stuffy to runny to back again very frequently and randomly. It keeps me up at night and frustrated during the day. I'm 16 and have never been tested for allergies as this is the first time these symptoms have bothered me. I've also never had the flu. I've been under a lot of stress this year due to switching to three different schools and relationship/emotional problems.

Part of the symptoms of an influenza virus is runny nose, sore throat, achy body, general malaise. Virus normally stays active for 14days.
Up your intake on vitamin C and spray your throat with antibacterial throat spray.
If you are completely over your cold and still feel that you have a lump in your throat that does not want to go away, then you can seek the help of an ENT Specialist to check out your throat/sinuses, etc.

Green phlegm is usually a virus. With the flu, there is usually more body ache and a fever up to 102 degrees F. Colds often have more runny nose and sneezing. There can be a little body ache, but it's not so much you desperately want to stay in bed or return there if you forced yourself to get up.
For a cold take zinc gluconate (it has to be gluconate) tablets, 50 to 75 mg. I don't recommend the lozenges because there is sugar and you don't want sugar when you're sick).
Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is an antihistamine and is used to treat sneezing, runny nose, itching and other allergies. So, as mentioned above it dries out the secretions and hence is not recommended in lung disorders.

I mean I usually get sick at the same time every year it seems like. right now i have a sore throat, headache, and runny nose(been blowing it all day). I went to rite aid and asked the pharmacist what I can take with my symptoms and she said Clariton. so I bought it and have had the biggest headache all day. Will that work for a cold though? t for instance waking up in the morning with a runny nose or runny eyes. Try omeprazole before bed and see if that helps. Could take two of them and a 150 mg ranitidine, also before bed. If that helps, then also raise the head of your bed a foot and a half (may need to put a board under the mattress) and avoid eating for three to four hours before bed.
I take Claritin-D daily for the same symptoms you have. I get bad headaches at night and my nose gets stuffed, with sneezing and runny eyes. Since starting Claritin-D, I no longer have that problem unless it wears off before I go to bed. I now take the 24 hr so I don't have that problem, but when I took the 12 hr, it would always wear off before bed and I'd bee all stuffed up.
I didn't get a runny rose until later in my pregnancy. Maybe around the second trimester. Ugh probably one of the more annoying symptoms.
Not to detract from your situation though.. I once had a too runny nose also - then had surgery to staighten a deviated septum and open the nose some without removing turbinates. I was good for a few years, then started getting beat-up by the dryness condition. -But the point is I know where you're at, and it is annoying.
In my present condition, I see some improvement when eating - apparently because the salivary glands are stimulated and the nose-throat are better moisturized.
One year olds can sometimes put a foreign body in the nose which can cause runny nose. Check that out with an ENT. Also check out a deviated nasal septum. Hay fever and allergic rhinitis should be ruled out. Persistence of RSV should also be looked into.
Normally the food allergens cause only gastric symptoms. However if the allergen is absorbed and reaches the airways it can cause hay fever and asthma like symptoms.
