Avatar f tn Is it possible to become addicted to over the counter medications? My 75 year old mother recently moved to my town so that I could help her financially, etc. I have become very concerned about the amount of excederine, prilosec, nasal spray, aleve, and other antacid medicines that she takes. She has a history of bleeding ulcers, she smokes about 2 packs of cigarettes a week, high blood pressure, and other ailments of old age. I didn't realize that she was taking so much of this medicine.

Avatar f tn Hello, The most common way to get rid of a stuffy nose is to use an over-the-counter (OTC) decongestant combined with an anti-inflammatory analgesic (pain reliever) like Ibuprofen. However, you should not use decongestants for more than 5-7 days at a time. This is because they can only provide short-term relief for catarrh, and using them for any longer can make your symptoms worse.. Avoid indigestible, spicy, foods and meats. Eat simply of wholesome food.
Avatar n tn It can also be treated using an antihistamine nasal spray or saline nasal sprays. Symptoms can also be relieved by using a nasal spray that contains corticosteroids. But due to their side effects,it is better to use saline nasal sprays. The golden rule for chronic stuffy nose is steam inhalation. Inhaling steam from a bowl of hot (but not boiling water) may help to soften, and loosen, the build up of mucus in your nose.
Avatar f tn A nasal steroid spray is also beneficial as well as oral steroids. Nasal saline irrigations over the counter like NeilMed or Neti pot are very effective. The best diagnosis for this problem is a CT of the sinuses. Surgery is recommended to patients that fail maximal medical treatment. Please discuss this with your doctor am sure he will provide further assistance. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.

Avatar f tn take an OTC antihistamine and use a nasal spray like Ocean Saline Spray. Do not mix antihistamines though such as an oral antihistamine and spray. Ocean Spray does not have an antihistamine and will simply dry you out and is safe to use with an antihistamine.

612551 tn?1450022175 I provide the symptom explanation as the cause of my question about over-the-counter (non-prescription) anti-congestion medications that any have found helpful. I have tried several (will list if this post goes anywhere) with minimal benefit. Problem: I've experiencing chronic nasal congestion, worse this spring than usual, especially when I lie flat on my bed, but also worse in the afternoon than during earlier part of the day.
Avatar m tn However nasal SALINE spray is not a problem and wets the dry nose like artificial tears do the eye. Non-preserved tears are more expensive than preserved. Most Eye MDs feel non-preserved are fine except if have to use 5 or more times/day, or history of problems with preservatives and perhaps for the first 4-6 weeks after cataract surgery. Using a computer or any video screen reduces the blink rate and can lead to dryness.
666921 tn?1254990618 My LLMD mentioned that the nasal steroid spray was OK to take for 1-2 months if necessary for allergies, as in my case. Another data point.
Avatar n tn I only spray 1 nostril since I need it to drip down my throat where my mucus is produced. My nose is always mucus free. The the nasal spray finds its way from my nose to drip down my throat. Works FANTASTIC for that. More options. I would do all this before going for Xrays and CT scans.
Avatar f tn By taking that spray (nasal decongestant spray over the counter) delay hiv antibodies and does it alter rapid hiv test?
Avatar f tn I also find sometimes that a saline nasal spray will help reduce ear stuffiness for me if my allergies are acting up - the nasal passages get inflamed and therefore, end up blocking the ears. Best of luck!
Avatar f tn I think they should consider trying a nasal steroid spray and/or a nasal antihistamine spray. Some of these can be considered safe during pregnancy.
Avatar m tn I think the nasalcrom over the counter spray should help. The clarinex might do it alone. Or the nasal spray. Both are effective. I prefer to take a once a day antihistamine rather than spray nasal sprays all day. I used to use them together. Benedryl is great for allergies but doesn't always stop the mast cell from releasing mucus. Try the Clarinex. It worked for me. As for the allergy shots I say HOO RAAA. They worked the best for me! Takes a few months. See my post for allergy shots.
9905230 tn?1409232795 You also may use a saline nasal spray, such as Ocean or Nasal. Do not use Neosynephrine nasal spray for longer than 3 days. You may take Robitussin DM for coughs or chest congestion. A warm salt-water gargle is recommended for a sore throat. Throat drops, spray, or lozenges are acceptable. A cool air vaporizer may help you sleep at night. Increased fluid intake and getting sufficient rest are essential. If your nasal or throat drainage changes from a clear color, please call the office.
Avatar n tn She fas sinus problems and allergies. The dov said her sinus was draining into the ear. He put her on mucinex and an over the counter allergy medicine which made her heart beat funny and told her to take benadryl for the dizzies. chk with your doctor first.
612551 tn?1450022175 I have fond that the only thing, pill or spray, that really clears the nasal passages for me is the "Afrin" type nasal spray. Of course we all know this will produce bad unwanted side effects (rebound and loss of sense of smell I believe), so I don't use this spray every night. As far as the other stuff goes I have decided that simple saline nasal spray works as well as any, and in the winter dry air also helps moisturize the nasal tissue.
Avatar m tn Treatment generally consists of avoidance of the causative allergens, once identified, routine daily nasal washes, the use of a prescription nasal steroid spray and/or the use of an antihistamine. The chronic use of inhaled or oral vasoconstrictive medicines, such as epinephrine or Sudafed ® (pseudoephedrine) is not recommended. Routine use of a nasal steroid spray can be very effective in the treatment of swollen turbinates.

My energy level is superb for my age. I no longer have muscle stiffness, and I am much healthier than I was 20 years ago. This is a FREE strategy.
