My daughter is suffering from eczema from the time she was 2 months old. Her Ped prescribed antihistamine for itching. We are concerned about the side effects. She does not have any immune system related issues. Her itching increases during the night time and it has been severe since the past 2-3 weeks. Only now we started giving her antihistamine and are concerned about the side effects. Is there any other way to stop her itching.

In your case, cold packs and antihistamine medication may help with the itching especially when taken at night. Try to avoid scratching to prevent secondary infection. If it persists, have this evaluated by your doctor for proper management. Take care and keep us posted.

I had prior to the vet visit above been given Wilson one half Benedryl 25 mg Antihistamine morning and evening, in the hope it would clear up the paw problem. A couple weeks of this did not produce any improvement. I then checked and saw recommendations to use 1 - 2 mg per pound. As Wilson is j20+ pounds my does level was low. I have decided to continue giving him Benadryl but now one 25 mg capsule morning and night. Hope it keeps his paws and general itch problems under control.

Also would Alegra help with my rash and itching or is that just for sneezing, stuffy nose and stuff like that? Also my cat is an outside cat but she hangs out on the front porch right outside my air conditioner in the living room and I am wondering if some of those allergens could be coming in the house? My itching did not start till we got the dogs tho.

Has she been wormed? Dogs with worms and itchy bums will show this behaviour. Just guessing ...

Thanks, I had seen some where making use of Benadryl antihistamine oral for dogs... making some adjustment for weight. Thus a 20 pound Westie would be a small fraction of a pill. I just now wonder too if the antihistamine oral might also be of some help with the skin.... I'll stick to one experiment at at time, otherwise the results can't be mapped to one action. I may try Gold Bond, that too had come to mind, in fact I tried a little a few weeks back and decided not to continue.

The lameness issue may be unrelated to the itching. The itching does sound like either an environmental or food allergy and should be treated by your veterinarian. The rawness and bleeding means that she probably requires an antibiotic for the secondary pyoderma (bacterial skin infection) that she caused as a result of self-inflicted skin trauma from biting and scratching. She may also require a steroid to calm the inflammation and antihistamines.

My daughter brought her two little shitzu dogs to visit for a few days and had not treated them with the flea preventative that she usually uses, because the weather had been cold and she didn't think there would be a problem. Hi, my dermatologist has prescribed me a antihistamine for my itching and wants me to use it for 4-6 weeks. The med is called hydroxzine. I am concerned because i never heard of anyone using antihistamine for that long. Will this severly affect my liver? Please help!

In approx 10% of dogs, any antihistamine can unexpectedly cause excessive sleepiness, or paradoxical excitment, and if these symptoms occur, then the antihistamine is discontinued. Perhaps this happened to one of the prior rescue dogs when given benadryl.

You may have "physical" or Cholinergic urticaria". Any rash (hives) appear together with itching? Next time when itching start take an antihistamine pill (like Benadryl). If this will help you, it means you have physical urticaria (allergy to heat in your case).

Just after we treated him 2 months ago his skin turned bright pink and he was itching like crazy! We took him to the vet and they said we werent bathing him frequently enough (every 2 weeks.) Gave him a Rx and sent us home... he got better throughout the month until we treated him with the Advantage again- bright pink and scratching like crazy again!! Any suggestions?
